electro-mechanical interlocks engage red traffic lights 2 minutes prior to the lift. that means she had to run several red lights to get where she was. criminals have no recourse under the law while in violation of it. she's gonna lose the suit, and may go to jail.

This lady is full of crap. If anything I would fined her for failing to yield for the lift.

I just read the article and watched the video and there are a few words that come to mind, A HOT MESS....
Thats right a hot mess because watching the video you can clearly see the traffic backing up on the right side of the road.Probably, but this is just a guess seeing as how they do this everytime the bridge opens, the gates went down. Also you can clearly see on the left side of the road traffic thining out, rapidly. Yet then you see one lone vehicle cruising the left side at a high rate of speed.
Hummm well here is one suggestion, get off your cell phone, pay attention to the road. Beacuse the speed limit on that bridge unless they have changed it is only 35 mph and with the loud bells they have going off and ohh the gates dropping almost instantly means you did one thing that we in Hampton Roads have seen over and over again.
You were in a big hurry to get nowhere, you raced through the gates, you ignored the warning bells(heres where the cell phone falls into play)ohhh and when you realized you made a mistake, well thats where the sueing comes in. Because heaven forbid we take credit for our own actions.

While I lived in Hampton Roads, I drove across the Berkley Bridge many times; even got stuck in traffic because there was a bridge lift. When the bridge is going to lift, we all hear the bells and see the gates go down. The lady who got stuck on the bridge when it was going up must not have heard the bells, maybe she was on her cell phone and not paying attention to the safety procedures this bridge has to keep motorist safe when a there is a bridge lift.

The light must be red before the gates will lower. All four gates must be lowered before the bridge can be lifted. It is possible to bypass the interlocks for trouble shooting and maintenance but unlikely a bridge tender would do so without a supervisor telling them to. As stated already, this plaintiff most likely ran a red light. There are good reasons why you see bridge maintenance crews driving around with traffic gates on their trucks. Hundreds of cars run these lights every week at all the bridges.

Give me a break! That is why they have red lights that mean STOP when the bridge is going up! I see so many people running it and I believe it is there fault if they get stuck! This is ridiculous and this woman is only out for some easy money. People like this are sad.......get over lady. I hope you get nothing!!!!!

I'm not certain about how this bridge operates, but I would imagine that they give plenty of warning bells, stop lights flashing, and so on before they lift the bridge. I think the woman was trying to "beat" the light and got stuck in the middle while the bridge was lifting. I never heard of a draw bridge just lifting suddenly without warning. I think the system is "idiot proof" in that no one can just lift the bridge without it flashing all the warning signals. This lawsuit should be the other way around. People like this make honest workers suffer and their job is already stressful and the stress is added by people acting like clowns.

What a ridiculous lawsuit. It's very obvious she ran the signal. If she would have stopped while the signal lights where flashing, she wouldn't be in this situation. The video clearly shows that there is a large gap in between the last group of cars and her SUV. That's like trying to sue Union Pacific because a train hit your car, but YOU ran the signal. Get off the cell phone and pay attention next time!

Hey, I suffer emotional distress everytime I sit in traffic at the HRBT...does that mean I can sue? Based on what I saw on the video, this lady is crazy if she thinks she's due anything!!

Sounds like another frivolous lawsuit and someone trying to make an easy living so she doesn't have to work the rest of her life. I mean seriously, she wasn't injured, she was able to drive her vehicle so it was THAT damaged...I hope this case is thrown out of court...SERIOUSLY!!!

She should not have run the red light to get past bridge lift. She should be sued for being stupid. Obviously she put her own life at risk.

I hope they laugh at her and this lawsuit. Really the truck was driven off and she claims "became sick, sore, lame and disabled" whatever.

I have travelled the downtown tunnel traffic for over twenty-five years. The tunnel gives advance notice of a bridge lift. It is apparent from your video shown on the news March 26,2008 there were no other vehicles in the front of her car or in the back. She disregarded the stop signs and the lowering of the gate. Why should she be awarded for her own decision to keep going. She could have backed up since no other car was behind her. When has anyone seen just one car on the bridge traveling at a fast speed. The driver was at responisble for her actions.
