Newport News takes on reservoir risk -- Virginia

Councilwoman Madeline McMillan was the only dissenting vote. Last year the King William County Board of Supervisors voted against borrowing the money, considering the uncertainty of the controversial project.

There is only one person on city council that even listens to the citizens and it's not the mayor! He was rude and condesending last evening to an elderly resident from the Warwick Lawns section of the city. He also rolled his eyes up when Mr. C.W. Powell said he was from a small town in North Carolina. He did not even give Cary Nunnally the respect she deserved when she ask that the vote for the James City County watersharing program be discussed further before gving a vote. Several spoke against the King William Project. They did not listen to any one and voted the way they wanted to vote. The city government in Newport News is out of control with overspending and under listening when it comes to what the people want. It is as Cary said last night in my words of course, what joe wants joe gets. The city says that it will borrow the money well guess who has to make the payments on that 289 million dollar loan the people of Newport News. You can blow a smoke screen all day but you are really making our grandchildrens financial futures look mighty bleak.
First off there have been times when the Newport News water supply has been low. Like in times when it does not rain for long periods of time. If we are giving our water to another county then what happens then?
The citizens of James City County didn't want that either! But they like Newport News citizens are being forced into things they don't like nor want for themselves. Like I said once before "YOU CAN NOT SILENCE THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE." We will be heard and come election time we will vote all those out of office who are not listening to us.

No risk for Randy. He can always backpeddle later, say he's sorry, promise to never do that again, etc. It does not come out of his coffers. Make a note that they said;"customer's water bills will not increase".

Borrow 20 million $?! City officials have been crying poor mouth for the last couple of months, telling the city employees that they have to "cut back" & that they have to come up with a budget for the upcoming year? Oh, but they can afford to do this without the CITIZEN'S approval? That STINKS!

Guess who gets to bale out the city since they assumed the risk on this. They will again be stealing your money to pay this off when the note goes South. Do you think businesses will negotiate contracts where they assume all of the risks? Not ones that are successful. But Government is always subsidized by the uniformed sheeple.

The Mayor has always been one of the rudest public officials that I have met. I don't see for the life of me why he has been voted in so often. I suppose as long as you satisfy the wealthy, they will continue buying the office you seek. And Randy is probably worse than his predessor. SPEND, SPEND SPEND and TAX, TAX, TAX. As long as residents of NN have a dime in their pockets, the present council will make an effort to get it.

Thank God Newport News owns the waterworks and not York County. Our water rates may rise a little, but at least we won't be in the poorhouse by the time they figure out that the new reservoir was a bad idea.

Of course, York County will find something just as dumb to spend our tax dollars on.

The issue isnt really about the water, it is about the poor financial government of our city. The game is this. When it comes to things they can cut, they dont, and when it comes to spending more money that they dont have, they are full of reasons why we need to pay up with more tax dollars.

The issue is that they are poor stewards of our money, and are wasting it. That is the problem. They just are not sensitive to the fact that they are irresponsible with other peoples money. But hey that is america, isnt it? You pay and pay, and the government poeople dont care how badly they mismanage things as long as they keep the political issues confused, and the tax money keeps buying the votes, and they keep the racial prejudice going, so the blacks keep voting for them. It's all good for them, but not the rest of us.

Oh, I heard that Joe Frank is a rich lazy guy. His only job is to spend other peoples money and he has no respect for money at all because he is loaded. Get rid of him now!!!

I guess we are lucky to have him though. Just think if someone who really could do a good job got the office. The drones in the city government and the daily Press will all be creaming bloody murder when the money flow gets cut off. I doubt we could stand to hear all of the screaming for very long.

289 Million is a h*ll of alot of $. How much has NN spent and will spend in the future compared to the cost of a desalinization plant? Does anyone know if desalinization was even considered?

Since the council is set up,so you can not get rid of them all at once, which they know and act on it,you have to do it over several years. That City Manager has to go for sure.since he is not able to manage this CITY.What happened to the retirement money???yuears ago they had enough in the funds"??

Doglvr, I've wondered this for many years. The outer Banks has water through desalinization without having to destroy wetlands to do it. The water there is the best. Why has this not been the way to go from the getgo? Seems to me the money spent in attorneys fees and the years Newport News has continued to wage war against government agencies could have well been spent on a desalinization plant and the water needed would be taken care of the GREEN way.

Why don't you move, I was born here and I have four generations now living here. Not to mention siblings and cousins. Nope,I'm not leaving. But I am going to keep speaking out about the injustices that I see in our city government. You can't silence the voice of the people. If this is such garbage then why are here reading it? Why because you know that we know what is really going on in this city and that we will do something about it and that scares you.
