I'm trying to find out some information on this hospital. I may have to send a loved one there. Does anyone have any info?

Greenwell Springs Hospital is a state institution, and you can't just "send" someone there. If you go through an ER in Louisiana and it is determined that your loved one needs time in a mental hospital, you really can't choose which one (unless, you want a private hospital). They send them to the one that has open beds. Greenwell Springs isn't very large, so their having an availability would be rare. My daughter had a suicide attempt, and I used to work there (am retired), and she still could'nt get in... However, it is better than most state mental hospitals. Walter Moss in Lake Charles is pretty fair too.

I will say, that River Oaks is the best. It is a private hospital however, and very expensive if you don't have insurance. If you can afford to choose which hospital, DON'T choose Greenwell Springs. It is simply not as good as a private mental hospital - trust me on that. And DEFINITELY stay away from Cypress Psychiatric! It is in Baton Rouge, and is HORRIBLE.

Unfortunately, I have some experience with these places due to my daughter's problems... Hope this helps, good luck! and God Bless!

I spent 16 months of utter hell there in 1986-87. I was in the annex wing. Many of us were held there for long periods of time, though we completed our treatments. Thorazine & lithium were common ways to treat us.
I was 14 years old.
I needed therapy for decades because of that place.

This is going to be a long entry, bear with me as I piece it together
Greenwell Springs Road Hospital has a long and varied history. Located 18 miles North of Baton Rouge. It is located on the site of the Old Greenwell Springs Resort, which burned following the Battle of Baton Rouge during the Civil War. A new hotel was built in the early 1900s that quickly floundered. This hotel was purchased by the Tuberculosis League in 1922. In 1923, the building burnt resulting from an oil-stove fire. In 1927, a new building was built, but it, too, burned. Fortunately it was insured.
Finally, a new hospital was built and in 1933 opened as a Tuberculosis sanitarium with a 334 bed capacity. This 1932 structure sufficed as the main building until 1952 when a new hospital structure, the "Mary Walker" building, was erected and the old building condemned and demolished. The bank of the Amite River forms the boundary of part of the property. Because of the nature of the disease, people tended to shun the area.
A timeline of Development at the Greenwell Springs Road Hospital Area
In 1850, Greenwell Springs Farm was founded. Owned by Robert H. Greenwell it was sold to William H. Pike and William Crenshaw, Pastor of the Baton Rouge Methodist church, after the discovery of 10 springs on the property. They intended to develop it into a resort
In 1854, the resort began to be operated by a Dr. Markham, and it was a great success.
In 1910, Dr. Barnhull unsuccessfully attempted to revive the resort.
1900-1911 a new resort was is built on the old Greenwell Springs Resort Property. It's a two story structure with 37 bedrooms, changing rooms and a 16 foot deep, wrap-around porch.
1922 the structure was bought by the Anti-Tuberculosis League headed by Mrs. St. Clair Favrot, mother of Judge Favrot. Mrs. Favrot spearheaded the Anti-T.B. movement and the purchase of the hotel for use as a sanitarium.
On December 23, 1922, the building burned, subsequently the property was donated to the Louisiana State Tuberculosis Commission
1926 a new building was added 31 May 1942 after construction of the new Hospital, before 1952, African-American patients were segregated into the old, Mary Walker building
In 1967, a $54,000 interdenominational chapel was built on the grounds of the Greenwell Springs Tuberculosis Hospital. Groundbreaking for the structure began on 1 September 1967. The chapel was designed by Desmond and Miremont architects. O.L. Couvillion, the contractor estimated a 6 month construction schedule.
In the 1976, the hospital began to accept patients from Angola.(In 1976, the American Lung Association, successor of the Anti-T.B. league unsuccessfully sued to have the land-donation at Greenwell Springs Road Hospital revoked. District Judge Luther Cole told them to go take a hike.)
In 1977, the state began to move mentally retarded and emotionally disturbed patients there.
In 1979, it expanded with a hospital annex of 194 beds.
In the 1970s charges of rape and abuse surfaced there.
In 1981, the hospital expanded its services again by moving 40 adult substance abuse treatment berths to East Louisiana State Hospital in Jackson, LA. The opened capacity was opened to treatment of adolescent addicts and substance abusers. This conversion opened in January of 1982
In 1981 amid allegations of rape and abuse, it was reported that there were more than 74 reported attempted-escape incidents. It was also revealed that GSR Hospital experienced an 87% staff turnover rate for much of its existence. It was also noted that many Vietnamese and Iraqi-trained doctors and medical professionals were employed by the hospital

I had a horrific experience there. I was there one day for admitting myself for feeling suicidal. Day one they drugged me so badly I slept. Day two I woke up in severe pain in my right side. I went to the bathroom and began throwing up, until I lost conciousness. They brought me to my bed when they found me and had a tech sit by my bed. I woke up and complained my side was in severe pain. The tech told the nurse who ignored him. It grew so bad, I'm a 30yr old woman btw, I began sobbing begging for a dr. They dont have a dr there! They arent a real Hospital. Just a facility. They grew tired of my pleas and put me in the "quiet room". They locked me in there as I cried and literally feared for my life. Finally, in a frantic and desperate attempt at getting help, I fled toward the door when I had the chance and banged with all my heart on it until I was of course tackled by staff. Regardless of how crazy I looked, it worked! I was brought to a real hospital and admitted as a regular patient. I was there for 14 days as my pancreas and liver SHUT DOWN. If I hadn't gone to the hospital I would have died. DONT GO HERE. They are a horrible place and do not put your child or loved one at risk. Take them to Vermillion in Lafayette. Or Baton Rouge-- St. Annes. I promise these two places far surpass the quality of care you'll find at Greenwell Springs. Btw- I do have a lawyer who said I have a case however after having sued a drunk driver who hit me 10 years ago I didnt feel like going through the tedious process. I did, however, file complaints to all medical boards I could.

Almost died in greenwell springs hospital of appendicitis
I got sick in the afternoon and was denied medical attention until her death
Then, I was taken to the wrong hospital where I got closer to death
Then, I was finally taken to a real hospital
My God! The absolute agony I was put through by thereafter there
The pain I was in was unimaginable and lasted for hours and hours.
I was cursed and ridiculed by one of the 'doctors' for throwing up for hours and told I was disgusting
Also, staff would smoke crack in the seclusion rooms and then jump and beat a patient and tie him in restraints. Them, they would have a 'nurse' come in and drug them. As if they even needed to be sedated. You do not sedate patients because the staff thinks it is funny to electively beat and drug them.
I have also seen several staff members touch young girls I appropriately there.
Staff members I have seen do this
William AKA Dip (af am coke head with Geri curl (that smelled like death itself- never washed hair inside Geri curl- even made some vomit when he walked into the room)
All these people are known child molesters
I can't believe the staff all didn't go to prison

In reply to you, I was a patient there at the age of 11, and I was not at all protected. I was allowed to be sexually molested by an older teenage boy for a whole year, which really hurt the whole reason I was there, which was that I had been sexually molested by my step father. The boy would physically hurt me to threaten me not to tell, but one day I got up the courage to tell and they protected me for a few days, and then he started to molest me again with even stronger threats to never tell again. This went on for a year. I am 41 today and didn't realize that I could have done something about this legally if I had spoken about it sooner. If your relative does get admitted there Please, Please, check on them every single day, and make sure they are not allowed to be abused by other patients or even the staff.
