Hello,
I need some assistance from this in the know. I have been offered a job and have my choice of places to live. Baton Rouge is among them. I lived in Louisiana but long before the hurricane. My son was born in Lafayette.
What is real and what is fiction? We have heard the business climate is coming back, and will be strong for many years becuase of rebuilding. Then we have heard housing is outrageous and crime is worse. What is the real deal. My other options are in the midwest or carolina's.
What about schools like Catholic High in BR or others. Would be better off living in Lafayette and making a commute a few days a week to whatever I needed to do in Baton Rouge for work. I will be working out of my house.
I will honestly give you the real low down on B.R. and N.O. both since Katrina have become crime ridden crap filled cesspools of violence and racial hatred towards people not of color.

I moved into the community in 1997 into a reasonably safe neighborhood and in 2008 left B.R. tired of murders and the dopers selling crack and murder all over the community.

Do yourself a favor move anywhere but to Louisiana they don't mind taking your money but do mind you working in the community.

The police are like a group of nazi stormtroopers trust me.

Move anywhere but to Louisiana it is a violent horrid place to live and I learned this from personal knowledge.

Just so you know they are due to start having to repay all federal money due to Katrina.

Also the insurance rates are out of control I learned this from moving somewhere else my insurance rate dropped like a rock after leaving Baton Rouge from 3 grand to 1200.00 a year same driver same car same insurance.

House insurance before Katrina 500.00 after Katrina 1200.00 new insurance out of Louisiana 800.00 and more coverage.

So take my advice run any direction but towards Baton Rouge it is full of crook, thieves and murderers.

If you want a nice place to live anywhere but Louisiana you will find it.

A little advice...DONT DO IT!!! I have lived in Baton Rouge since 1999. I am only here because of my children from a prior marriage. As soon as they grow up a bit..I am gone! I honestly do not have anything good to say about it except the food is decent. If you are not a food fan or a LSU fan, there is not much here. If you like dirty streets, crime, ignorance, poor education, TRAFFIC, and a bunch of no class people, its the place for you! Your familiar is better off elsewhere! The motto around here is BATON ROUGE..A GREAT PLACE TO LEAVE! <quoted text>
Thank You for being honest I came to Baton Rouge in 1997 and found B.R. to be a truly rough place to call home.

My neighbor three doors down from me was a BRPD officer who told me you don't belong here.

After 11 years of harrassment and a false arrest I left the community.

It has been just over two years and no one has called the police on me.

Matter of fact after the house was finished my neighbors were glad to have someone fix up and move into the wreck on the street.

Baton Rouge neighbors told me after I was done to sell and leave.

All I know is you can have a better life if you leave the community then if you stay.

Well, Wow! Just Wow! I would love to know what the cities you lived in before you lived here were like.
I, too, am a transplant to Baton Rouge and I can't say enough good about it. It's a beautiful city, and, although it does have a heavy traffic flow, it's easy to get from one place to another once you get a map and learn to plan your excursions.
While the public schools inside the city may leave somewhat to be desired, if you choose, you can move to Livingston Parish or to Zachary and find shools that should be quite satisfactory. And most locations have all you could desire in grocery stores, beauty shops, etc. as well as always being in easy driving distance of most any form of entertainment you seek.
I hope you have a chance to visit this lovely city before you move here....I think you'll find it delightful, and filled with friendly, courteous, good people.
What wacky weed have you been smoking I found people to be violent, shallow and just plain nasty to deal with.

My saddest day moving to Baton Rouge My happiest day locking the door on the moving van and leaving that good forsake hot hell hole on the planet.

I left town and went to a working class neighborhood in the mountains up north.

I learned from being burned and screwed over by the BR natives that the city motto.

Is everyone from out of town is a sucker and if someone is from out of town screw them and rob them blind and leave them broke.

Baton Rouge is a city full of criminals, liars, thieves and murderers and that's including the police as well.

DONT DO IT! BTR was great back in the 90's and early 2000's but this place is a real hell hole now. Any charm or beauty that was here is long gone. Crime is high, traffic is terrible and like a blogger said the people are fake here too. I'm not just saying this the locals here been saying it as well. The only good things here are the cuisine, and the weather. Its funny when the police, and Bishops of churches say themselves Baton Rouge is not the place to live, I thought they were kidding, but they are not! As a LOT of the locals have told me Baton Rouge is good for 2 things, to retire, and to visit, after being here for a little over a year, they are NOT lying. In fact don't even move to Louisiana, you can do WAY better.

I live in Baton Rouge now. I like Louisiana and it seems superficially appropriate to use the capital city as a base to try and improve the communities. But I don't know how realistic that is. I've been harassed by the police and it's hard to find basic work. I would like to see what happens after I try to get into the business community and politics, just to see. The LSU student community is basically a revolving door, not from here, not staying here. Not relevant.

I have lived in many cities in Louisiana and BR was one of them. My neighbor was a BR cop and he moved away before I did saying he couldn't take the city anymore. It's not a place to raise a family. I moved my family to Calcasieu (cal-cuh-shoo) Parish and live in the Lake Charles Suburbs. It's beautiful, there are things to do, public schools are great, so there is no need to spend a college tuition grade school. The city is growing but the thug population is not. The city only has 80,000 on the census but that is because the city hasn't annexed in a looong time. The population outside the city limits has grown tremendously but is not considered city limits. The best places to live in Louisiana are hands down, LAKE CHARLES, and LAFAYETTE. I got tired of shootings and killings, robberies. In BR there are two kinds of people, those that commit crimes and those that are the victims of the first groups crimes.

Increasingly crime rates, very poor schools in East Baton Rouge. Zachary is highly recommend. Also Denham Springs is a great place to live with great schools.

DON'T DO IT. I have worked in 10 countries, and at least as many states. I can say, unequivocally, that Louisiana, and Baton Rouge in particular, is the worst place I have ever been forced to live or work. You will be a perennial outsider in the most cliquish, shallow place you have ever been to. Traffic- horrible. Crime- horrible. General quality of people-(those that don't want to rob or harm you) shallow and fake. Quality of the people that do want to rob you- not fake, but of course- horrible. Ignore the realtor(s) wanting to make money off of you, or people from this horrible state and town trying to put a rosy shine on how it really is here. It's awful. If you come here, you'll regret it.
I've gotta disagree with you. I've traveled quite a bit and I've never met warmer, friendlier people than those in BR. I'm talking about the settled community, the old families who've lived there for generations. I've been away for a few years and don't know about the newcomers from NO after Katrina, but the heart of BR is still there. Youll find shallow and fake people everywhere you go. I think BR is one of the most attractive cities in LA, in America, and the people are the finest. I wish I could live there again.

I left BR 20 years ago and recently came back for work. if you get into the work community you will be Ok. However, the nepotism in this town is insane. The crime and traffic unreal is terms of how horrible it is. The city council and the Mayor are beyond incompetent. I am truly shocked how different BR is ...the city is gutted, rotting, dirty, and unsightly. There is absolutely nothing to do in BR, you have to leave the town to do something. If you move here live in one of the towns nearby, DO NOT liv in BR, there is no zoning, the city planning has to be the worst in the Country.

Hello All,
I recently got an job in Baton rouge. How is the city overall from the safety point of view. I see most of you all are saying that the crime is very high. Are there any safe areas/neighborhoods outside of BR to consider for renting a 2B apartment. I am OK to spend extra money for the safety of my family. Where does all the corporate employee's live?
Please advise,
Thanks,
Charlie

Cancer Alley - Highest Cancer rate in the country due to refinery emissions in the area.
Top Murder Rates- Consecutively Scores In Top for Murder Rates in the United States.
Crime - In highest Crime Rate Catagory in the United States - many years running.
Most Cases of AIDS -#1 in Cases of AIDS in the United States.
DO NOT MOVE TO BATON ROUGE. IT IS THE WORST PLACE TO LIVE IN THE UNITED STATES. FORGET WHAT THE PEOPLE SAY - READ THE STATISTICS. EVEN THE AIR AND WATER ARE POLLUTED DUE TO THE PLANTS AND REFINERIES EMITTING IN THE AIR- THUS, HIGHEST CANCER IN AMERICA. NOT TO MENTION THE CRIME AND AIDS CASES HIGHEST. THIS IS SAYING NOTHING OF THE RUDE AND TREACHEROUS PEOPLE TRYING TO SURVIVE IN SUCH A LOW QUALITY OF LIFE. VERY LOW CALIBER PEOPLE. THE DEMOGRAPHIC EXPLAINS ALOT. BATON ROUGE IS A FILTHY, DANGEROUS PLACE WITH NOTHING AT ALL TO DO, ESPECIALLY FOR THE POOR CHILDREN FORCED TO GROW UP IN SUCH A HORRIFIC PLACE.
DO NOT MOVE TO BATON ROUGE. YOU WILL HAVE POIGNANT GRIEF OVER YOUR DECISION IF YOU RELOCATE TO BATON ROUGE - OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN LOUISIANA. IT IS LAST IN ALL THE STATISTICS FOR A REASON. DO THE RESEARCH. IF YOU HAVE ANY CHOICE AT ALL, DO NOT MOVE TO BATON ROUGE. EVEN THE AIR AND WATER IS POISON. THE FOOD IS VERY UNHEALTHY AND THE GENERAL POPULATION IS NOT INTO A HEALTY LIFESTYLE. LIVING IN BATON ROUGE IS A LIVING DEATH.

I'm not disputing your word, it's been a long time since I just visited, my last time there was around 2004, maybe earlier, but I sure hate to hear all of this. When I was there I thought BR was a pretty place, it looked cared for, the parts I saw of it. And I know a lot of good decent friendly people, lived there all their lives. But heck, it aint just BR that has changed, the whole country has gone down hill, IMO. I keep hoping the economy will turn around and things will look up.

I really am sorry to hear such a bad report on this once fine city.
