I heard we're getting a Steak N' Shake by the new CVS, I am SOO hoping that one is true! I doubt we get a Hobby Lobby though. I heard a few years ago we were getting a target, and a white castle, etc. Never happened

I've heard an Ollie's Bargain Barn in the old car dealership, but haven't heard about a Hobby Lobby.

We are getting a steak n shake behind CVS. I truely doubt we are getting a Hobby Lobby. Batesville is too small of a town for that.

Interesting that you would mention the SavUMor building downtown. I know the current owners have contacted over 20 national retail chains (including Aldi, Dollar Tree, Big Lots, etc), and all have declined to rent the building due to the location. They also contacted all independently owned grocery stores in the tri-state. Another organization was actually interested in renting the building (not a store) but the mayor actually told that organization to find a different building to rent downtown because he wanted a grocery store back in that building. Trust me when I say that the current owners would love nothing more than to rent the building and have been working for months to make it happen. It is listed with a realtor so if you know anyone who might be a good fit please direct them to call Tudor Square Realty. I don't know if anyone has seen the news on the programs the City of Lawrenceburg has implemented to get business in their downtown. Programs like those would be a great benefit to Batesville.

In addition, the reason that their are still groceries on the shelf is that they are non-perishable items that are being donated in small increments to local Food Pantries and churches. These churches and organizations simply don't have the room to house the goods.

I thought local food pantries were practically begging for non-perishable items, especially this month, up until Thanksgiving. The Batesville food pantry has a very lengthy list on their website of things they are in desperate need of, which I'm very sure are items that are sitting on shelves in SavUMor. Its just sad to see that stuff sitting in there when there are so many families in need this time of year.
I agree

Why leave it sit and just wait for it to expire then can't be used by anyone. There are lots of families that could really use that kind of stuff.

I guess perhaps I didn't explain clearly.

A)It's being donated in small increments because the only items remaining are items that Food Pantries actually DON'T NEED right now.
B)The store is not a full stocked grocery store, the remaining items are things such as Garbanzo Beans and Chick Peas. Again, these are not high demand items and local charities have said they simply do not have room for things that they don't absolutely have to have
C)The organizations who hand out food have limited space available to store donated items.
D)The items sitting there are not in any danger of going out of date for quite some time

I find it so interesting that such a positive thing (donating food) was turned into something so ugly.

Personally I think everyone on this thread should be more upset about the lack of downtown development...just drive and look around at all the empty buildings. Other towns are doing things to encourage small businesses and bring more business to their town. I don't get the feeling that the mayor or anyone in his office or any of those "planning" commissions really gets what it takes to build this town back up. Many people who travel to Batesville don't even know where downtown is, they think it's in the Goody's shopping plaza. If you think about it there are no signs along 46 pointing you in the direction of downtown. Most people travel 46 or 74 to 46 and they aren't even aware that downtown Batesville exists.

I have also heard that the price of the building is something outragous and people simply don't want to spend that kind of money on a building that old. most would rather build a new one out where the action is (by the interstate) and still be cheaper. everyone goes out there to Krogers anyway so why not do what everyone is doing, and build out in that area?? Obviously if the owners have contacted everyone you say they have there must not be many interested in buying it.as for the groceries that have no demand what will happen if somebody does buy it?

As a regular purchaser of real estate in the area I happen to know that the asking price of the building is exactly in line with the appraised value. Basically, they arent asking any more than what the building is worth. While the building was built quite some time ago all the mechanical systems (a/c, heat, etc) and the roof were replaced less than 5 years ago. People arent interested in opening a business downtown because the town isnt effective in encouraging further development in the downtown area.

well coming from a professional real estate purchaser, I am assuming the building will never sell then.if nobody is interested in the downtown area, sounds like moving it will be a huge problem.may have to take way less than it's worth or have another vacant business in the bville area. i.e. starbucks, this one, rite-aid, old urgent care, alcapocos. how about a target, meirers or something somebody would use. shopko will be gone by next summer

The old CVS (Is that what you meant by rite-aid?) is going to be an O'Reilly Auto Parts. The lease that Starbucks had on that building is for 10 years, so the owner is still receiving income and is in no hurry to rent it. Not that it doesn't look bad being empty, but she's not from around here, so why does she care? Urgent care is currently in half of Dr Garcia's building, so one can assume that he is going to expand his dental practice.

I think a group of old time locals should get together, buy the Save-A-Lot building, and resurect Danner's. That would be awesome.

OReilly car parts? now thats what we need as bad as we need another bank..same old, same old. but your Danners idea is a dandy, would love to see them back in there. that was when the building did have some customers going in and out.

The solar company probaby needed a good source of cheap/uneducated labor. That work force is easily found in osgood.
