Speed kills......not even going to speculate if a helmet would have helped keep them alive. It was their choice.

Prayers for the families left behind.

A trike does not have the maneuverability
that a motorcycle does. Taking a turn at any speed takes a bit more effort.

Isn't the statistic that 75% of all motorcycle accidents are fatal? I know that that is what the VA DMV driving test said when I took it way back when, cause I got that question wrong. Now if that is still true today - why would anyone ride a motorcycle w/out a helmet? Yeah, yeah it's a personal choice - I tend to agree with you on that basis alone - I mean - I don't like the law that says I HAVE to wear a seatbelt either, but I still know that when I wear one I'm safer than without. It seems like common sense to me to wear a helmet.

Peolpe are dying in droves on our highways. When is something going to be done to increase the number of troopers patrolling the roads in Lexington County.

I notice they didn't say alcohol was a factor - waiting for the tox screen to come back? I think it would almost certainly have to be.

Question - how is a "Trike" different from a regular motorcycle and can 3 people ride it together safely anyway?(Obviously I don't know much about motorcycles.)

A trike has 3 wheels and NO 3 people can not ride it. It is still only made for 2 unless there was a side car on it.(Which considering the location, "Gilbert") there probably was not a side car. It was 3 drunks riding for a cheap thrill.

A trike is a 3 wheeler and NOT meant to carry 3 people.

So, you got an idea how to pay for them? Cause the governor doesn't, and the only thing your legislators are interested in is their own free boose and bimbo events.

If you remember just about ten years ago when you probably had a trycicle, it is the same design, but a grown up version, with a motor and big wheels. It does not, for anyone with a brain, mean it is safe for three people.

I used to know this guy who lived in the Gilbert/Batesburg Leesville area who used to brag about how many times he had wrecked his motorcycle while drunk and how it was a miracle he never got hurt because he never wore a helmet or anything resembling protective gear. I just don't understand the mentality that would drive people to do something so incredibly dangerous and stupid. If you have a death wish - please don't drive, because chances are you're going to kill more than just yourself.

Well unfortunately, everyone on the trike is dead, and so there is no one to ask about them drinking, and certainly they can't be given sobriety test. And if they hit a tree going that fast, and not wearing helmets, I'm sure it was a mess. I doubt the troopers wanted to get close enough to the faces, if they were even reconizable, to see if they could smell alcohol.

Bike or no bike, car or no car, running, jogging or walking fast. If you travel in such a way, that you can not "stop safely". F=MA or Force is equal to mass times acceleration. You or your vehicle will have to absorb that "force"! It is a factor or "risk", anything in motion, to include motorcyclists, are subject to. This is the "Law of Physics. But be safe, observe personal and mechanical limitations, and barring fate, you will be alright. "Live to ride, and ride to live"....(not my quote). Regrets for any loss of life on our roads.

When are folks going to start taking responsibility for their actions & decisions? First thoughts & prayers go out to the love ones that are left behind because it still hurts. Second , as for as putting more law enforcement on the highways by this time it's TOO late. People who are intoxicated think they can still drive so unless they are prevented from trying to operate a vehicle it's too late. My suggestion is to stop gas stations , grocery stores etc from selling alcohol ( and certainly from selling it cold) and only allow it to be sold from the red dot stores and not cold. This way it would be easier to monitor, police & regulate who buys. Make the punishment severe for anyone who breaks the laws and then enforce them. The laws being age and also selling to someone who is supspected of already being drunk. Also why not make it illegal for anyone who has been caught drinking & driving before to never be able to buy alcohol again in additon to losing their driving privilge. Folks innocent people have lost their lives because of someone else's bad desicion. And last , for bars, honky tonks, night clubs or what ever you want to call them why not make them pay for law enforcement to be manned at their establishments and everone coming in has to surrender their keys and when they leave the MUST give a copy of their tab showing how much they drank and over what time frame and take a breath/sobriety test before they are cleared to drive. I know this sounds like infringing on someone's rights but again folks innocent lives are taken every day because some one else thinks they have the right to drink & drive. And as stated above in my post LET THE ESTABLISHMENTS PAY FOR THE LAW ENFORCEMENT not the tax payers. The tax payer isn't the one profitting from the sale the ESTABLISHMENT is. And if ESTABLISHMENTS don't want to pay it let them pass it on to their customers.

I continue to be amazed at the number of people in SC who thumb their noses at common sense. No one wants their taxes raised, but there are indirect costs for tolerating the stupidity of unsafe drivers - high insurance costs, cost for medical personnel and police to respond to these accidents. Wake up! Just because there is not a law preventing a person from doing something does not mean you should do it.

In general, I think riding a motorcycle is a bad idea. My cousin died at age 22 in a motorcycle accident - sober and wearing a helmet. He left behind his parents and two brothers, one who was his twin. They were devastated.

I was 12 at the time and I made a decision never to ride a motorcycle so my family could avoid the same pain. Riding a jet ski on Lake Murray gives me as much fun without the worry of hitting a tree or another car.
