Scouts lift ban on gays

May 24, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Martinsville Bulletin

The Boy Scouts of America threw open its ranks Thursday to gay Scouts but not gay Scout leaders - a fiercely contested compromise that some warned could fracture the organization and lead to mass defections of members and donors.

I wouldn't suggest that, but Hindu boys & Buddhist boys (as well as boys of other faiths or no faith) are banned.
Didn't used to be. There were "God and Country" Merit Badges for both of those religious groupings.

When I WAS IN SCOUTS, it was a REQUIREMENT that you believe in the God Of Abraham. I remember some controversy about this at the time. it WAS a requirement when I was a Cub Scout & Boy Scout, and I think it still is.

The fundies in your area must have taken over the BSA, just as they continually try to do with 12-Step programs, forcing their definition of "higher power" on any clueless enough to wander into one of "their" meetings looking for help.

Wiki say:

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA), one of the largest private youth organizations in the United States, has policies which prohibit atheists, agnostics and "open or avowed" homosexuals from membership in its Scouting program. BSA has denied or revoked membership status or leadership positions for violation of these foundational principles.

On May 23, 2013, the BSA's National Council approved a resolution to remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone effective January 1, 2014. The ban on openly gay adult scout leaders remains in effect.

The Boy Scout oath is:

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
And to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
Mentally awake, and morally straight.

Hindus and Buddhists do not honor a God and so, like Atheists, they wouldn't be able to honestly take the oath - and so they would be banned.

Ah, good work - These websites show that the Boy Scouts have accepted both Buddhist and Hindu members and ideas.

Some examples are:

Metta: The Metta Program is for all Cub and Webelos Scouts with at least three months service and is designed to help Cub Scouts to further their knowledge and practice of the Buddhist religion.

The North American Hindu Association offers two sets of awards: the Dharma awards and the Karma awards. Both are non-sectarian, non-denominational Hindu religious awards. You do not have to belong to any group or a temple.

Each allows Hindu children to learn the basic fundamentals of Hinduism and gives parents an opportunity to participate.

SO.. the only ban that the Boy Scouts still upholds is for Atheist/Agnostic adults and children and Gay Adults?

This is what I think I have learned about the Boy Scouts:

It is a private organization so, they are allowed to ban whoever they want to ban. There is no law to enforce that they allow gay people or any other people they don't like. They are being convinced to adjust their standards of acceptance to (also) accommodate gay people - BY CHOICE. They didn't have to do it.

I am surprised, though, that this organization receives federal funding but is still considered a private organization. I would have thought that the public funding would obligate the org. to make itself available to the public, the ENTIRE public. That's not the case, however.

Lord Baden-Powell was, himself, gay.

OH - the Boy Scout's founder was gay? Isn't that ironic?

He wasn't officially gay - strongly suspected, apparently - sort of "any idiot could tell" but wouldn't dare?

This supports the idea that the Boy Scouts encourages gay people to be dishonest or at least quiet about their homosexuality. It's this attitude that modern gay people are trying to get society to recognize and change. You go, gays!

Not really. You're taking it too far. Baden-Powell lived in what was still a very Victorian-influenced society in England. Gay people were very aware of what happened to Oscar Wilde. Bear in mind that it was taboo for a woman to be out in public if her pregnancy was visible.

This does not mean that gay people WANT to practice subterfuge in their relationships.

I kind of doubt he was gay, since he married a woman and had several children. Any proof of your assertion or just more liberal clap-trap ?

That would depend on how much gays WANT to be a Boy Scout leader, wouldn't it?

No one can change how things were - I can understand how it has benefited gay people to hide their identities before NOW, but... I can definitely understand how and why they want society to accept them honestly. Boy Scouts upholds honesty and integrity - however, when a gay person is honest about their sexuality, that information is used against them to dismiss them from the program. It's an unfair practice.

Until recently, there was no "proof" of who was gay who was not - unless they told you personally, any evidence to support another's opinion of someone's sexuality would be hearsay.

Many gay people have married and reproduced the same as heterosexuals - hiding homosexuality is how gay people avoid intolerance. Their point is: it shouldn't be this way. Quit pressuring gays to be liars.

What? Being heterosexual doesn't mean that you are a closeted gay person - but you are in denial if you think that gay people do not pretend to be heterosexual so that they may be treated with respect.

I don't know much about Lord Baden-Powell (only what I just read online) but his title suggests that there must be an estate to back-up that aristocratic name. Am I right?

Heirs and inheritance is very important to people who have an estate that they are sure will outlive them. Do you think that a gay heir would be pressured by his family and society to produce some offspring to continue his family heritage? It's an incredible motivator to marry and have children regardless of one's sexual preference.

I have known marriages that were based on foundations other than love and companionship - since marriage is a LEGAL AGREEMENT, there are many motivators to pursue one.

Go play with your monkey and leave the little boys alone.
Where you born rude or did you learn it from your heterosexual influences?

I do not molest boys because I am not a child molester. If I was a child molester, I would not molest boys as a result of being gay, since I am a female. If I were gay, I would not molest girls since being gay does not make people molest children!

You do not know the difference between gay people and pedophiles.
