Get ready to fall over because I agree with Bobby again here. I do believe John had the purpose of fighting Gnosticism. It wasn't his only purpose, but it was one. I also don't see the text as "keeping fessed up" in order to be saved. Walking in light is walking faithfully as we know the light of the Lord. Perhaps we should all look at Gnostic beliefs. It is still alive today, and we may possibly have one on this message board. I must say, from what I have seen, their beliefs are somewhat confusing.

Bobby, do you have a "smart" phone, or was the c and the v too close together? Dace is an interesting name. You don't need to apologize. I have been called worse ;)

I have an iphone but I do not use it to post on here. Sometimes I use my ipad though. It was just a case of me not typing very well-old folks syndrome or fat fingers...

Btw, that son I was speaking of practically forced me to start using a computer about 10 or 12 years ago. He bought me a windows unit that I learned on and then bought me an Imac. Then came the ipad and iphone. I kept telling him I could easily afford them but he said that I would never buy them for myself-he was right. So he is a good son in many ways. Back when I was building houses, I built his first one and his second one, he has never forgotten that.

I agree and by the way the scripture has a lot to say about/against Gnosticism. Why don't you do a new thread exposing the errors of Gnosticism. I am not personally studied up on the subject but it might very well clear up a lot of our issues here because Gnosticism is still alive today. You might start off with a definition of what they believe.

The reason I posted this thread is because Johnny Marrs' beliefs are very close to Gnosticism. I am also convinced that is the purpose for 1 John 1- to combat Gnosticism.

I agree if by walking faithfully you mean abiding in Christ and His doctrine. I disagree with the Baptist and Pentecostal view/teaching of 1 John 1. Again, I am not saying abiding in Christ means sinless perfection. I know my position on 1 John 1 is not a popular one but I'm completely convinced on this. All through Johns opening declaration he makes a contrast between those who believe and those who do not.

You might benefit from reading this below. I think gnostics throughout history are probably constantly evolving. So, I don't think they would have the exact same beliefs as they did in the early church times.

I believe that the worst problem they had back then and still have is accepting the deity of Christ and his death burial and resurrection. It does not get much worse than that.

Honestly, thats a thread that would require much detail and references- one I rather not tackle. I first studied this around 15 or more years ago. I hadnt really thought much about it until reading the post from Marrs. His beliefs are very close to Gnosticism. I am very convinced that John was writing to refute Gnosticim. I am also convinced John was not giving a confession formula that keeps one walking in tye light. Staying fessed up was not what John was saying. Jesus ALWAYS intercedes for those abiding in Him. By abiding I do not mean those who are sinless- I mean He FOREVER intercedes for those who trust Him for salvation.

Well, let's think about that a bit. Do we ever do wrong or do things that may be an offence against Him in any way? In that regard, wouldn't leaving our gift at the alter and seeking to be reconsiled by asking His forgiveness be appropriate and in keeping with what He said we should do?

Seems to me it would....?

I agree Barnsweb ... thats why in the post above I said Christians will have a heart like David when they sin. However, I disagree with "formula forgiveness" and do not believe John was providing ChristIans with 1 John 1:9 for a purpose to stay fessed up.

How come you will not answer me? That is a sin. Are you aware of this?
The reason I don't answer you is because you're not a prophet of Jesus Christ. You're either a kid or an adult with some serious mental issues. My advice is go get some professional help.
