I know about the whole episode. Galileo said that the earth and the planets orbited around the sun while the Catholic church and its "astronomers" said otherwise.
Sola Science wins again. The Protesters in the Catholic church couldn't stand dissent and jailed the man. At least they didn't burn him at the stake or give him the Mel Brooks Inquisition Treatment.
Hundreds of years later, the RCC does a PR image makeover and Dad issues an apology. I am surprised they didn't exhume Galileo and pronounce him a saint, but maybe that required payment from his ancestors or a secular university. What is the going rate for buying sainthood in a Vatican mass?
OK Sproul-lite, hundreds of years later??? Galileo's body was moved from one part of the Catholic Church where it had been originally placed in 1642 and reburied in a fabulous tomb in 1737 where it remains today. His neighbor is Michaelangelo.

If that is what you you know about the whole episode, then you are pretty ignorant on the subject. He was a Catholic Church scientist.

You should know that a theory remains a theory until it can be proved by other scientists the same way Galilieo did.

He had the complete support of his employer, the Chruch, until he wrote that fictional book with his findings in it.

Once again, his theory that the universe revolved around the Sun instead of the Earth was wrong.

His punishment was consired a hand slap with the culure of the time.
The Church continued to support him in his own Villa and he continured his work.
He never denounced the Church and his sister remained a faithful Nun until her death.

The apology came hundreds of years later. I know where they are both buried. Been there, seen that, bought the t-shirt.

Mike you have turned into the Catholic version of Barnsweb. "That fictional book" was dead-on balls accurate and it flew in the face of Catholic ""science" which was Sola Scripture-based. The church threatened to torture and kill him if he didn't "repent" of his work, which he did under duress. He was hounded daily by the church while under house arrest and his treatment prevented more pure scientific inquiry, which thankfully happened outside of the influence of Rome due to waning church power across other parts of Europe later.

Sorry that you have swallowed the grape Kool Aid but that is how it all went down.

So do you still believe the universe revolves around the Sun? Galileo had a theory that was partly true.

From the Washington Post, not a bastion of Catholicism I would imagine.

By then an old man of 69 who in his defense referred to his "pitiable state of bodily indisposition," Galileo was charged with "vehement suspicion of heresy." He had to renounce "with sincere heart and unfeigned faith" his belief that the sun, not Earth, was the center of the universe.

After deciding to publish the Dialogue, Galileo had followed strict protocol. He had his book scrutinized by church censors and received the church's official imprimatur. He had clearly fooled all of the officials into thinking that his ideas were being presented only as hypotheses. He had almost gotten away with publishing a heretical work without provoking papal fury.

Commenting on a work by the Rev. Paolo Antonio Foscarini, a Carmelite who supported the Copernican system, Bellarmine wrote, "I say that, if there were a true demonstration that the sun was in the center of the universe ... then it would be necessary to use careful consideration in explaining the Scriptures that seemed contrary.... But I do not think there has been any such demonstration."

Bellarmine was correct. All of Galileo's evidence, specifically the telescopic observations, showed that Earth could be revolving around the sun but did not prove that it was.

I love history. The Church was wrong in his punishment. Not according to the culture at the time though.

We won't hold the current COC responsible for declaring black people as not humans but property just 150 years ago.

The RCC done in by Sola Scientifica and forced to admit its error centuries later in an effort to clean up its image with the scientific community at large.

And I see that New Dad is today condemning Reagan's economic model of Trickle Down Economics. New Dad needs to learn that Obama isn't popular if he ever intends to raise money from rich guilt-laden Catholic Americans he needs to stay away from socialist rhetoric.

Bad PR move for a guy that has done a pretty good job of rebranding his company's business image to date.

That is a problem, not for Catholics because they will ignore it or put something in the Catechism to explain it away but it is a problem for the "THRUTH" or someone in search of it.

Indeed!

The 'key' is to know how what we believe the truth as we've been taught is really the same as the truth that Jesus preached?

Dave, how do you know what the 'truth' is? What your Church told you to believe?

Are you trying to be the the funniest poster today?;-) This reminds me of the little girl saying she had to eat her raisins first so they didn't turn in to grapes! Jesus and the gospel according to the Law, Prophets, Psalms and the Son of God is who I obey. Tertullian gave an excellent apologetic to Marcion to show that doing anything Paul taught was nothing but nothing of what God ever taught through the Messiah, Master YHWH Y'shua. SDA focus on Ellen and Paul as much as JC - not much help there. I doubt Alex is even a real Christian at all. Has he ever talked about his being a disciple of Yeshua?

Now how about a serious, or at least thoughtful reply? And better yet, defend your "because the CC told me so" routine. Show me you're capable.

Jesus created a Church and promised it would never fail. Jesus' Words. Find that Church and that is where the Truth has been protected from day one.

All history points to one.

High end Prots believe that the CC was the one. However, they believe that Jesus failed and therefore lied.

Low end Prots believe their community was the one or every believer is part of that Church no matter what they believe the Truth is.

Jesus' church did not fail.

However, the Holy Spirit predicted that some would fall away from the truth. You're in the church that resulted from the apostasy.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-12
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,
4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God[fn] in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things?
6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time.
7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.
8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.
9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,
10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,
12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
