What are the worst streets, sections, parts, etc of Lakeland in your opinion?
What areas should a person stay away from? Any areas that you would never go even during the day? Any hardcore ghettos in the city?

I'm just curious.

Where people don't want to get involved. Residents who are cowards, liberals, pacifists and conformists. That's where and how it starts. Where loud car music is heard all day, traffic flying and down your street, people who do what ever the hell they want and give the finger to their neighbor. In Polk County... take your pick.

Mid Town and West Lakeland. Gang violence has actually gone down since I graduated from high school in 1994. I wouldn't expect someone in Auburndale to have any idea what really does on in Lakeland.

The county as a whole has a long way to go with regards to corruption in general. The back-handed law enforcement is a larger part of the problem than anything. No local DEA even though drug traffic is a serious issue and at an all-time high. The Polk County Sheriff is actually doing a better job than in years past. No the local police departments need to be cleaned up.

But, to answer your question, there are really no hardcore ghettos in Lakeland. I've lived in major cities (L.A., Chicago) in the US before returning to Tallahassee and there isn't a place in Lakeland where I feel threatened. However, there are areas in which I'm fully aware certain things can (and sometimes do) happen. I wouldn't expect caucasions to hang out in Mid Town Lakeland. I wouldn't expect Black people to hang out in Combee or Eaton Park. You can get robbed/stabbed/shot virtually anywhere if someone choses to do so. However, the likelyhood of that happening increases in those areas. Plain and simple.

Where is Mid town?

So Eaton Park is considered a bad area?

Is Reynolds Road safe?
Thanks.

Midtown is the area just north of downtown all the way up to I-4.

Generally, Reynolds Road is pretty safe. Some growth and development is poised to hit that area in a few years so it's bound to get even better (starting with the 4-laning of R.R.). Eaton Park isn't bad but again, it varies within the different sections of Eaton Park.

I forgot to mention that Eaton Park is looked at as a lower income area because it's a working class community. The housing options range from all brick houses to trailors in a very small area.

Highway 92, once you cross it going north on Combee Road the "culture" changes.

Eaton Park past the Post Office. Don't take walks around there at night.

Colonel Avenue going West towards Lake Bonny, stay off the streets or you will get run over.

Meadow Lane Subdivision north and south via Main Street to Combee Road is a traffic short cut for speeders and bleed off traffic. Boom music seems to radiate all around the area.

Crystal Groves near N/S Crystal Lake Drive seems to get routine police visits.

All in all maybe you should consider Georgia or just stay out of Polk County?

Regards.

The real crime area is the lakeland square mall, where the vendors are getting rent raped causing them to pack up and move, eventually to leave another empty mall like we had 15 years ago at the old lakeland mall.

Maybe you should post about the retail issues. This person is interested in crime, not your wallet.

I lived in Lakeland, Fl for over 12 years. I am back home now in the North. I loved Lakeland. I never felt frightened anywhere in Fl. actually. There was a few areas of concern ... Martin Luther King Blvd. area and parts of N. Fl. Ave. but I am sure times have changed now. I liked near Lake Hollingsworth for a few years, no problems there. I also lived on Reynolds Road for awhile (7 years) it never was that great to look at there but we never had any problems while living there. Then we moved to the Highlands - it was super nice there. We had a new home built in a new subdivision, great area. We were robbed there. I feel that you can not stereotype an area just because it looks bad (because in most cases it will be a nice place to live). There is violence and crimes in all areas. All in all - Lakeland was a great place to live.

Well i'm from Lakeland and some parts seem like a vacation spot but other parts can get real violent. I not too long ago got away from the street life and the things that were done that no one knew about but me and my homeboys would make you all opinions change big time. Neither one of you know about the beef between Lakeland and other cities in polk county because you probably never lived the life of a thug. The craziest thing about the city is, its the younger kids keeping the violence up. True statement if your not from around the (L) Lakeland you might want to stay to yourself. It gets real in Lakeland Florida. Don't get me wrong we're not no Miami or West Palm Beach but its pretty crazy in the L. I'm 20 years old so I'm not too young or old to know about my city.

When we start referring to Lakeland as the, "L" it's time to laugh or move.

Personally I'm laughing.

Lakeland has been one of the tamest areas I have lived in. Having been stationed all over the world I believe I have some sense of the least desirable habitats and some of the greatest.

All communities have there share of crime. It's the SPREAD of said crime that should be your indicator of a communities future.

I've heard all the disparaging comments about the local LE and it typically stems from those deal with them most frequently. Self proclaimed thugs and other folks that don't have enough sense to be a productive member of society.

The local LE seems to provide adequate support to the community in prevention of increased crime per capita.

Situational awareness is key. This post is a great example as the OP is investigating what may be troubled areas. Pay attention to where you are and when you are there. Pull the cellphone out of your head when walking to and from your vehicle. Pay attention to the people around you and your environment.

I bet your throwing up gang signs right now aren't you?

Your twenty years on this little rock doesn't influence my call in this least bit. If you want some real world experience go out and get it. I spent nearly a decade in the military. What exactly have you done in the, "L?" Graduate high school?

Comparatively, Lakeland is tame.

I have to say that I love Lakeland. It is so conveniently located between Tampa and Orlando. I believe that violence is everywhere. As well as gossip.
I firmly believe in minding my own business, and keeping to myself (staying out of the fast lane) there seems to alot less stress that way.
I am sure that Lakeland has it's issues. However, you can avoid it - by staying clear of it the best you can. Stay away from the gang areas. Lakeland is nothing compared to Los Angeles or Huntington Beach. I was there on vacation - oh my, talk about wild.
Keep in mind that you can FIND trouble anywhere.
And you can avoid it as well.
From time to time you will still have someone tread upon you. You will always run into a nut from time to time.
Remember if you run with the troublemakers you will find trouble.

OK , Lakeland people please comment on this. It is my opinion Topix is gratly exagerating the crime scene of Lakeland , I'm expecting to soon read of Batman and Joker sightings here at topix.

This is my opinion of why we are getting this exageration. It's all part of The Cara Murphy cover up stradegy. The "Oh , that thing happens everyday here thing." As a follower of that story I understand Ms Murphy did go to bat for her friends in that interview , and I could have some respect for that , but I don't. And I also think now she should not only apologise to The Lindsays , she should also apologise to Lakeland.

It is my opinion what you're seeing here at topix and maybe other places is a campaighn being orchestrated by MJ Lopez and some of the other attornies of The Mulberry 8. I as an honest person find this very hard to tolerate , but I wonder more. How do the home owners of Lakeland tolerate this?

I could point to the religious communte too. But overall , here and now April 2009 , a year later. I say don't blame the Mulberry 8 at all. They were raised by parents that don't see anything wrong with jumping a girl or teasing her while she is jumped. They don't apologise for their stupid statements. Honestly if I saw one , I'd offer her what she really needs. Fatherly advise. From there I am sure I'd be subjected to the class her family raised her to have.

I lived in Lakeland for several years, I loved it there, I was robbed once while living there. I had some precious non-replaceable items taken from me...like my high school class ring, my mom/dad's wedding rings that they were married in. Things of really no value to the thief, but meant the world to me. I still grieve for them. I personally have NO TOLERANCE for a thief !!
There is crime everywhere!!! It is here in my homestate as well. Our garage was robbed since I have lived here. Gangs, not sure about. Maybe they are down there somewhere. I am sure that Lakeland has changed since I left. I see no reason to joust about the issue. I say pray about it.
Keep in ming that these topix sites, have tons of issues, opinions, untrue statements, gossip, slander, etc. etc. You should see the ones in my zipcode. You really would think we had gangs here if you read topix in my zipcode. I guess you could say that we have a "gossip" topix chat sites. I still check my old Fl. zipcode because I want to be up on the things going on there. I can tell you this. Lakeland and the surrounding areas, such as Polk City, Auburndale, Eagle Lake, Bartow, Winter Haven, etc. have the most decent topix sites. I mean that ! I am ashamed of mine. They get out of hand, like cheating w/a married man, talking about people (and they list their names), gossip about the hometown. Someone can start a topix out that is a nice one about a decent subject, and sure enough someone will trash it.
That's why I come back to Fl. sites. I feel that opinions are okay, but trashing people are out of line.
God Bless everyone

Well , I think Lakeland is a fine place. For those who are so negative try living in Tampa or West Palm Beach or anywhere south of there.

Polk is a great place to live. I wasnt born here but I am certainly happy here.

I have a community forum (aka) discussion forum for Polk county residents only. check it out sometime. We could use great topical conversations over there.
