my concern is WHAT WILL THIS DO TO THE SMALLER STORES IN TOWN? will they eventually be forced to close? with the economy the way it is, people will go to the places that are the cheapest.
good for the consumers, bad for the business owners.

Yes, the smaller stores will close. Highland has lost Schnucks, IGA, Niebauers Meat market, many small stores, several clothing specialty shops in the last 8 years Walmart has been a super store.

i wouldn't wish the loss of a family store on anyone, BUT recently i was blown away at the way a store owner talked to a elderly customer. the story goes like this: i was in this carlyle grocery store picking up a few things for the campground, then i overheard a woman ask the store owner if he had a specific advertised sale item. the owner became beligerant and said in a loud voice, "if you want it then you'll need to talk to (specific man's name) in breese. the woman replied, "all i did was ask you if you had the item". the woman received no apology. i then seen her leave her grocery cart full (probably close to $100.00) and walk out of the store. I later seen this same woman in carlyle walmart and i spoke with her. she appeared upset and told me she could not believe how disrespectful this man was. she said that she was not from carlyle but did shop there weekly. she said she'll never go back and neither will the group of ladies that she normally shops with. where is the HOMETOWN PRIDE? what i witnessed was enough for me to start stocking up at aldi's or walmart super center before we go camping. I WON'T BE BACK EITHER!

Carlyle's new Wal Mart opened June 17th. As far as the local business shutting down, maybe they deserve it. Some have been charging us way too much for way too long. Others, like the Carlyle Meat Market, have great prices, friendly staff, and fresh meat. I will continue to give them my business for those reasons. However, other stores who have been taking advantage of Carlyle residence for a long time because they had no real competition will get what they deserve. One grocery store in town charges over $5.00 for a box of cereal that is $2.68 at Walmart. They also charge almost double for some bottled drinks and sodas. Who can afford to continue to shop there.

The new Carlyle Walmart is haunted. Everytime I go there I see a ghost near the frozen foods section.

Carlyle IGA will make it...the owner said his business is virtually unchanged since Super WMT came in. Not sure about Super Valu...

But, if the smaller businesses can't compete then that's just too bad.

I know that the Dollar General's sales are down. I think they would be better if either 1. The driveway got fixed by whomever owns it or 2. They moved closer to town again. What do you think?

Daily Horoscope for December 30

Cancer

Discussions and meetings go really well today because you're finding it easy to put your thoughts into words. You'll also show that you respect other people's viewpoints even if they don't coincide with your own. It's a good day for making domestic plans, and some of these will be quite ambitious without being unrealistic or far-fetched.
