Collecting memories, images of The Washington Beach Hotel on Washington Lake. When my family went there it was owned by the Gregory family. Would love to know history of that family also. Please add comments, memories, facts if you can. Thanks

Washington Beach. Back in the 1960's I grew up there. I was a local boy hanging out with the city kids who had cabins. We used to play football until dark and then sleep on the beach. I remember Ginger, MEG (Marry Ellen Gordon)and the Daughtery twins. One of the twins kissed me - can't forget the first kiss that made a girl laugh. I am now just makeing one girl laugh.

I learned to drive at Washington beach at 3 years old. My dad was in getting a beer when I shifted the gears and steared my way down hill until I hit a tree at the waters edge.

I summered at my Aunts house in Barryville during the 1950's. I would go swimming there every evening in the summer. I remember a wooden dock that went up hill at the end so you could run up and dive in. Thats where I learned to swim. I remember a ping pong table in the hotel. I even skated there in the winter. My uncle would drink beer with his buddies and play ping pong. My uncle was a member of the Yulan Volunteer Fire Department and also played baseball for the Yulan firemens team. I remember Bud's Tavern on Beaver Brook Rd accross the street was the fireman's baseball field and where they big clam bakes. I went to Eldred Centrel School for two years. Always wanted to move there alas no jobs for me in Information Technology. There was also a movie Theater on River Rd n Barryville at that time. I would walk with my Dad down mail road when it was light out then after the movie walk back in the dark very scarey for a little boy.

Thanks for posting Robert. I had forgotten about the ping pong table. The Yulan Fire Department is still standing and in use. Do you every go back to the area? Yes, the dock was a classic. Part of it still stands although the part you mention that rose up is gone, just level now.

Lots of Memories I also remember going to church in Eldred the little church on the hill. My Uncles Mom lived in Eldred. My Uncle was Tim Timmerhoff he raised 4 sons two of them married twins the Hallock sisters and moved to Montana.

I've been back three times since then. It's a little sad to see it's kind of like the yuppies have moved in the beautiful people from the city pretending that they are getting back to the land.

It's not the little country town I remember.

I first went to Washington Beach Hotel when I was 1 yr old in 1937 . My mother Ivy Jones had started going there 2 yrs earlier. I was there every summer until 1958. People that I remember are Shiela & Regina Flarity, Fred Kramer, Tom Murphy, The Wade twins, Old man Tether & Ivan, The Smith Family. Does anyone out there know what became of these people? Please contact me @ [email protected] Thank-you.

Yulan in the 40's and early 50's had a large unoccupied woodland back then. I remember behind the Washington Beach Hotel (Tethers and later Gregorys) in the woods maybe 100 feet or so was what we kids refered to as the Old Indian Caves.Me and a couple other kids went into the caves and then began exploring what layed beyond.
we wandered around in the woods and soon realized that we were lost. We kept looking through the trees hoping to see water (Washington lake) for then we would be home. When we finally saw water it was Lake Bodine. So from that landmark we navigated our self back to the hotel.
I returned in the early 60's and saw a bunch of homes along Washington lake. The forest was disappering, and a new time was begining. But alas we always have our memories.

Hey Ronald. I remember those woods. There were also some large mountain rocks behind the hotel and I used to play with toy soldiers on them, often finding some sort of snake nearby. My family stayed at Gregorys until they closed it down. I believe I heard once that the house that now stands on that property uses the foundation from the bar section of the hotel.
