In The Arctic Race, The U.S. Lags Behind

There are 132 comments on the www.npr.org story from Aug 19, 2011, titled In The Arctic Race, The U.S. Lags Behind. In it, www.npr.org reports that:

Seattle is the home of the U.S. Coast Guard's entire fleet of polar-class icebreakers. Both of them.

Capt. George Pellissier commands both the Polar Sea and the Polar Star. He has spent much of his career on these ships, which were built in Seattle in the 1970s.

He takes pride in the fact that these "polars," as they're called, are still among the most capable icebreakers out there — not counting the Russians' big nuclear-powered icebreakers. But Pellissier admits that if an ice-breaking emergency broke out, America wouldn't have much to offer because, right now, neither polar icebreaker is functional.

What is the economic feasibility of transiting cargo across the polar ice cap? Who lives up there?? Over 90% of Canada's population lives with 100 miles of the US border. A fleet if ice breaker just because the Russians have them sounds like a bridge to nowhere.
you have to go to Panama if you are transporting Chineese or Japanese stuff to West Europe (or back)- look at the map and google for North-West Passage....also looks like you are not going to benefit from Arctics gas deposites?

<quoted text>those films you mentioned are mainly politisised or kind of specific professional classics- "The Battleship Potemkin" for example, that no Russian would watch exept for students in cinamatography - Enemy at the Gates is good film, but it show war with western eyes- as a result many war veterans here demanded it to be prohibited in Russia(but it was not)- they were absolutelly enraged by such scenes when soldjers in a movie were transported to front line like cattle in carriages-cages (maybe victims of Gulag were transported like that, but ofcource not soldgers who often were in exelent relations with officers, shared food and established the best friendships that lasted for decades after the war - such details are exactly what gives knowledge about the country or (in contrast) make a carickature out of Russia - there are a lot of simple Russian movies like comedies or melodramatic ones with a lot of everyday life details - "Pokrovskiye Vorota","Zimnyaya Vishnya",from 1970-80-s Soviet times,- a lot from ourdays, some soviet films after Chechov's classics "Moi Laskovyi i nezhniy zver'",- well, tons and tons of movies where some everyday life is seen - for example a movie from 1963 "Ya shagayu po Moskve" which has a lot of details of everyday life etc...

If it was truly economically feasible, free market, private enterprise types would be all over it.

<quoted text>Oh yeah they mentioned that too, at the end.
The show is called "Battlefield Detectives" so they're trying to figure out how stuff happened :o
In this case they were trying to determine if the cold weather had as much influence on the outcome as is commonly accepted.
I will have to watch for that one Battlefield Detectives.
As for the cold weather influence it played it's part due to the fact it's was harder for the Axis forces to mount a counter offensive and there equipment did not function nearly as well.

It amazes me that people thing millions and millions of soldiers had, what? millions of others standing behind, ready to shoot them? Impossible even with machine guns. More cold war propaganda. People just don't want to believe there were tens of millions willing to fight for the Soviet Union.
In Bruges was a British film starring Colin Farrell. It was a crappy movie about a couple of hit men hiding out in Bruges. Not worth seeing!(in my opinion)
The NKVD were a nasty bunch.

Ah okay I'll keep looking. I still haven't been able to look through that movie site yet but hopefully some of those are on there. The first one - The Pokrovsky Gates - it looks like the entire movie is on youtube so at least there is one I can watch for now.

I am eternally grateful to Cassandra, yes, Cassandra. I learned, from Cassandra, something I did not know and it is earth shattering information. Get ready, here it is, truth telling=complaining. Yes, truth telling is equal to complaining. I wonder, does this pertain to all, to certain groups, certain people or a privileged few!!! That's OK. I don't need your majesty, your graciousness, to answer this humble peasant. I will live without further explanation. I do not need royalty to grace my character with anything. Janko Buk aka MrOwl.

Hahaha !!! Agreed. Who in their right mind would want to go to Russia as a tourist. I have been to Russia on business twice. Each time it was worse than before. And that was before it became what it is today. More Russians are leaving Russia and coming to the West. Many who have worked hard and accumulated some wealth have been wise to realize that their financial security is not guaranteed in Russia, with it's authoritarian government of RULERS. Also, they want to provide their children with a better quality of life and a better future and education. Only fools like hmmm will be left. A group of primitive neanderthal's chattering out loud about how superior they are. Hahahaha.

In your dreams Sticks, when you wake up you will see Russia very wealthy on it's way up, and the West nose diving fast into obscurity.

Ha !!! Yes, the wealth in Russia sure as hell goes up. Upward soley into the hands of the "Rulers", and the cash coffers of the corrupt. But not into the hands of the average working folks who make all the wealth possible.
