...US kept Massoud and his resistance at arm's length, perhaps because they were receiving weapons from Iran, with logistical aid from Russia and the Central Asian republics. According to a Human Rights Watch report on the regional weapons trade, one Iranian shipment seized in Kyrgyzstan in 1998 contained ammunition for T-55 and T-62 tanks, antitank mines, 122mm towed howitzers and ammunition, 122mm rockets for Grad multiple launch systems, 120mm mortar shells, RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenades, hand grenades and small arms ammunition.

His "resistance" was against the Taliban. Whom he viewed as invaders. Just as he did the Soviets. Whom he also fought.

Yes I know, and Russia also offered a "joint missile shield" with the United States in Azerbajian. But I guess being in Poland and the Czech republic would be much easier to "intercept a missile launch from Iran", than being right on Iran's doorstep... He called their bluff. Offered some of that Russian missile tech as a blanket, and Washington exposed itself for what it was. Liars. Putin offers joint missile shield US officials say they will examine Mr Putin's proposal President George W Bush has described as "interesting" a proposal by Russia's president for resolving the row over the planned US missile defence shield. Vladimir Putin said their two countries could use a radar system in Azerbaijan to develop a shield covering all of Europe, during talks at the G8 summit. Mr Putin said the base could detect incoming missiles from so-called rogue states aimed at Europe or the US. Russia has been critical of US plans to extend the shield into central Europe. Mr Putin has repeatedly scoffed at US claims the defence shield is targeting rogue states, and has said Moscow may in response aim its missiles at Europe. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6729751.stm |
