I have been told that they are not going to close Pennellwood despite a newspaper article that says they will be turning it into a subdivision of homes/condos with a three hole golf course and a marina.
They are supposed to be phasing in log cabins to replace the already existing cabins. If what I was told by the owners is true, then Pennellwood will be a much more upscale resort then what it has traditionally been.:(
I have heard several different stories and am not sure who is telling the truth.
If anyone knows anymore, please post.

From the Berrien township minutes on 6/27/06
"The present cabins at Pennellwood would be torn down and a log cabin year round home would be built to specs. The homes will be single family homes privately owned. If no home sites are bought before next May then Pennellwood would continue to be opened as usual. If 3-5 were sold then the resort business wouldn't continue."
Guess that answers the questions. Doesn't look like anything definate is passed yet but from how the minutes read it doesn't look too good for Pennellwood.

DOES ANYONE HAVE A COPY OF THE SPECIFIC PLANS OF THE CHANGES THAT THEY ARE PLANNING TO DO??

The Kardas Family has been going to Pennellwood every year since 1958 and have seen many changes in that time frame and yes things do change.
Pennellwood may be going FULL CIRCLE. The original cabins were individually owned summer homes with names like St. James & Bob White. The Pennell family eventually bought them out. Then we have Grand Pa Stacey buying the resort from the Pennell family. going to Lad & Shirley Stacey selling to Don Jones selling to Ed Patricark selling to Jack Davis and going back full circle with nephew David Stacey buying the resort back into the Stacey name.
I Have known all 3 Stacey families all my life and they are all well know and respected in Souhwest Michigan. David & Jamie will investigate all avenues to do what they feel will be best.

Are you sure about that? It does not seem like they are now. They have lost alot of customers due to poor ownership. Pennellwood is such a unique family resort that they should have no problems getting new guests. Jack Davis seemed to always be able to keep the weeks full of guests. If these changes go through it will ruin Pennellwood.

Have you talked with Dave and Jamie about their plans for Pennellwood? If so, what did they tell you?

Yes and Jack sold Pennellwood for more than double what he bought it for. Along with subdividing the the Pennellwood land on the other side of the creek. Jack retired in comfort with a 7+ Figure.

David & Jamie have put alot into the resort and they cannot run it like a hobbie. or they will loose money.
How long would you keep putting money into cabins that were built in the 50' & 60's.
Or maybe you would invetigate other avenues.

They could just renovate the cabins or build new ones that are similar to what is already there. Not luxury cabins/homes, but simple cabins with just the basics.
That is what Pennellwood used to be about. A simple resort with great service and a family atmosphere. Dave and Jamie have gotten away from the family atmsophere and that is one major issue that is causing them to lose guests. A perfect example is the moving of the shuffleboard/ping pong/ horseshoes area to the back corner. That was always the central part of Pennellwood Resort in which familys spent so much time meeting others and spending quality time together. It was perfect because adults could play shuffleboard while their young children could play in the sand box or on the playground. Now, it is hidden in the corner and is not used anywhere near as much as it used to be. It is sad that they are willing to give up what Pennellwood Resort has always been about just to make more money, when all they had to do was build on what Pennellwood already offered and make people feel welcome so that they would want to come back. Building a huge fancy dining hall is not what will bring guests back, but caring for your guests and giving them the feeling that everyone is part of the Pennellwood Family will.

if these changes take place, they will be destroying the best family resort in the world. That really sucks!

This morning my eight year old son cried inconsolably as we prepared to leave Pennellwood. Pennellwood is his favorite vacation destination, ranking above Disney World, the Disney Cruise, Mexico and the Carribean. This is the third season we've vacationed at Pennellwood and we had to tell him that we didn't know if we'd be going back.

Pennellwood was NOT taking reservations for next season- usually they stress the need to reserve your cabin for next year before you leave. We were told that all Pennellwooders would be receiving a letter in September to explain their upcoming plans and heard some rumors about planned condos, which are true based on the berrientownship.com website.

I can't believe that these changes might happen. We all need to write to Dave and let him know what a huge mistake he is making!!!!! I know some people that already have. Maybe if he gets enough letters he might realize how important Pennellwood Resort is and he will leave it as it is or sell it someone that cares!!!!!!!!!!

What?????
That is crazy. I looked at the Township minutes from their meetings. I can't believe that Dave is going to destroy Pennellwood Resort! That sucks! He hasn't even told his guests yet!!! What a jerk. He does not realize how important Pennellwood Resort is!
He is a terrible owner. He should sell the resort to someone that cares about it.
I hope all the Pennellwooders are writing him to express their dissapointment.

what did other Pennellwooders think of the letter that Dave sent out this year? If you read all of the minutes on the Berrien Springs Township website, it seems like there are alot of contradictions to what he is saying about the future of Pennellwood Resort. As anyone heard anything new?
