My family and I have been living in Houston since 1980. Before that we lived on Illona Lane. One of our favorite treats was a blueberry crumb pie from Custom Bakers in Island Park. Is it stil there? I would love to surprise him with one on our planned weekend return to New York

Nope. Custom Bakers has been gone from Island Park since early 1990's. I too loved their cakes, pies and especially their cheesecakes! I grew up in Island Park and grew up on Custom Bakers delicacies! Since their pies, and cakes marked every special occasion from my childhood, Custom Bakers brings back such wonderful memories to me.

I really miss Custom Bakers yellow cake with chocolate frosting. I have never tasted another cake like that. I would get Custom Bakers cakes for ALL of my birthdays (beating out Carvel cakes) and when we would come home from Atlantic Beach in the summer time ,we would always stop off at Customer Bakers. Does anybody, anywhere know where I can get a recipe copy of Custom Bakers yellow cake with chocolate frosting? They had something special also on the sides, like crumbs or something.
Please send it to Sales@skyecrafts.com I don't know what I can give you in return, except a big thank you and maybe a garden gnome. Yes, I'll trade a little garden gnome for the Custom Bakers Recipe for yellow cake with chocolate frosting. I do know that the kids of the owners took over and then had trouble so they closed it. God, I missed that hulking red albatross of a building on Long Beach RD. What's there now, Dunkin Donuts, right? I am in Florida, so I don't get back to old NY much.
Thanks

the building is on austin blvd. I believe that many years ago it started on LB rd. as you come into IP by the barrett plant entrance. That had burned down and moved to austin blvd. near the school. That had closed down in early 90's. now has a laundry mat and did have a DD but close. As how to contact anyone? I think that Has become the past as well like the Texas Ranger.

Hi, so nice to see that people still remember my family's bakery. However, the 'kids' did not take over the business. My grandfather felt that it was time to move on.....I still miss it everyday......

Grew up in Oceanside and Custom bakers was simply the BEST!!! Just wish I could have continued the tradition of a customer bakers cake for my children birthdays. I agree the best Yellow cake with chocolate icing. I've tried so many and none come near as good as customer bakers, along with teh blueberry crumb...out of this world.

I not only remember your family's bakery, I am going back to school for a baking certificate because of it. The childhood memories I have of getting a birthday cake from your family's bakery are what our birthdays were all about. My husband would stop on his way to my home when we were dating a bring a pie for my dad. 25 years later we are still together. It's crazy how certain things become part of our lives. We really miss the cakes. If there is anyone left in the family who still makes those cakes please email me...Happyep@aol.com

Nothing could beat their cheesecakes. They were to die for. I couldn't remember the name of the place so I wrote an e-mail to Whistle Stop which is a bakery in Oceanside and they told me Custom Bakers had closed. That must have been a very sad day.

I too so miss the yellow cake with chocolate frosting. It was always the birthday cake that I requested each year while growing up. Of course, all of the other cakes were equally delicious!! Are any of the recipes still around, and if so, is there any way you could post any of them?
