Blue, as always, people like you imply that the graduates of Remsen, no matter who they are or what they major in, are in college taking remedial courses in all subject areas. You and your ilk don't ever seem to have the guts to identify individual departments for their inability to prepare our children for college. The fact is my child did very well in college science and math courses. However, they had to take remedial course work in ENGLISH and COMPOSITION. Couldn't write a college level report or term paper or even spell worth a darn. Don't remember them ever doing a term paper in high school. My child also did poorly in foreign language(French)as well. Made it by skin of there teeth. I don't know about other parents but this has been a consistent theme for all of my children who graduated from Remsen. Where is due diligence from our Board and Administration? They know about this situation but do they care and are they qualified to lead our schools? We must demand more from the school for the sake of our kids and their futures. If the teachers in those subject areas can't meet the challenge, along with the administration, then we should send them packing!!! NO MORE EXCUSES!!!! We pay enough to get the VERY BEST not SECOND BEST. Hope that many Remsen residents will join the battle to save our children, school and community.

Wonder, I'm with you. The time has come for this community to rise up and demand that those individuals who are in the position of preparing and leading our children into the future, do so by example. We need to insist that they demonstrate the hard work and the commitment required to meet the task. This includes comming to work on time every day and remaining after school long enough to help those students who need it. Just sit around outside the high school on any given day and see who shows up late or leaves early. I've witnessed it myself. On top of that, teachers should not be out of school as much as some are. I'll refer you to my first posting on missing teachers for that. Lastly, as for clubs and sport's teams, the individuals who are hired to lead or coach should be evaluated every year. I've been told by some that evaluations are never done. This is just lunacy!! Yearly evaluations would minimize the occurance of issues created by poor judgment and leadership, as was the case in the disbanding of our National Honor Society a few weeks back. Ask to see if the advisor was reprimanded by the board or the administration! This is no joke because it effected many of our children in a negative way. But as usual in this school system, nothing happens to the adult!!! How about putting her in inschool or out of school suspension? Or maybe even expulsion! Good luck on that one! I'll have more to say as good and reliable information becomes available and believe me there is alot more to come. I promise!

"Conversely, the children who apply to institutions of higher learning are finding out that they need remedial courses before they can be accepted." This statement does not imply that they need remedial courses in all subjects. It depends upon their degree selection. The fact that they need any remedial courses, speaks for the quality of education they received at Remsen.
Your statement, "However, they had to take remedial course work in ENGLISH and COMPOSITION." shows how bad it really is. All of your core courses in college are going to include English and Composition. How do you do a thesis for any course without that knowledge? FYI, I graduated from Remsen. I did the "remedial" courses to get my college degree. None of my children ever attended Remsen School. My point is, if you have a group of teachers who are among the highest paid in New York State and the students are not well prepared to enter institutions of higher learning, there is a problem. This is only my personal opinion but, if you are a teacher at Remsen, you should be embarassed to ask for an increase in salary. They need an outside source to come in and evaluate the students. Look at the "student evaluations" done by the teachers or aides and then do an independent test/evaluation of the students and see how they match up. We as parents have the responsiblity to give our children the best education, that we can afford. At the very least we need to monitor their education.
If the comment about disbanding the National Honor Society is accurate then the school is in need of some type of oversite. They are not doing their job, not doing what they are overpaid to do.

Blue, I'm also a graduate of Remsen and like you I needed remedial help in English Composition. that was especially true for writing term papers, you those over 5 pages! Not only that but I had to work very hard on my spelling skills. I graduated with a good position in my class ranking. So, I wasn't lazy, just fooled! Seemed those teachers who were most popular with the students, those who wanted to be your friends, cheated us out of the most! The truth be told you're right about oversight Blue but you need to include the Board and Administration in that oversight. Too many close and coszy relatioships with some teachers and staff. If you've spent any time in Remsen as a student, as you and I did, it doesn't take long to see who's in and who's not! The good old buddy system really does well in Remsen schools. Its too bad that some teachers are painted with the same brush as those teachers and administrators who don't deserve our respect or our tax dollars to support their jobs. Budget time and board votes are comming soon! Lets see if we can recruit and elect individuals who will hold EVERY employee of Remsen responsible for doing their job. For those who do, they should be rewarded, for those who don't, they should be sent packing before they do further damage to our lovely school system. Its funny and at the same time sad to think that we have teachers and administrators who work so hard not to work!!! If only they would put that effort into being quality teachers and administrators, this discussion would not exist!!!!! More truth will be flowing as it becomes available. And Blue thier is no National Honor Society in Remsen at this time!!!

To "school board president" that comment makes no sense!
I know that there are people who truly want a good education for their children. They are frustrated by the politics.
As I have said before, there are teachers who are overpaid for "not" doing their jobs. As someone pointed out "it is a broad brush". That was not my intent. As I said, I needed remedial courses to get my college degree. But, there were teachers, who did not receive the type of compensenation that teachers in Remsen are receiving today, who went out of their way to help me and I am forever grateful to them. They are the teachers that when you see the ad on TV, "Did you have a teacher who made a difference in your life?", you think about. For me that would be, Mrs. Rathbun, Mrs. Ossont, Mrs. Nellenback and Mr. Roberts. All of them cared about their students and expressed an interest in our education.

To Truth, I agree with your comments. But, I removed myself from Remsen over 46 years ago. I still have family in the area, visit often, so I am aware of the situation. Yes, there needs to be accountability. The problem is can you mobilize enough individuals to do it? Most times people "go along to get along". No one wants to "point a finger" or "rock the boat". What Remsen may or may not recognize it that because of new requirements they may not have a choice. If the state does bring in new rules and requirements, they may not measure up. We all understand that they will try to circumvent the rules. My opinion (and everyone has one) is that the students would be best served if Remsen was taken over by another district. That way you remove the people at the top and the "parochail politics". The only problem I have is, what is the bus ride. I know that my bus ride was 45 minutes. That is a long time for a child to be on a bus. While that is a minor issue for a good education, I still remember how long it was.
