Just was wondering WHY the flags were flying at half staff at Holland Patent Schools today..I understand the loss of the student was a tragic accident...BUT IT IS NOT WORTHY OF THE FLAG BEING LOWERED TO HALF STAFF..this is reserved for high ranking public officals..judges..etc...beside s..WHO gave the school the permission to do this. The only people who can order a flag to be flown at half staff is ..the president..the governor..or the county executive..I don't think that Obama called Kathy Davis ..or Cuomo did either the give the green light...just sayin..

What is worthy? Who determines worthiness? You?

Yes, The Pres has the authority to order flags lowered for various officials or dignitaries. So do Governors.Military commanders also have the authority to order flags under their command. However, that is where the authority to ORDER a flag lowered ends.

There is no law against or provision of United States Code that prohibits an individual, group, or organization from lowering their flag. As you say, the County Executive can declare that county's flags be lowered to honor a person, occasion, etc.... of local importance. In fact, US Code is intentionally vague on which other instances may warrant lowering the flag. This is by design to allow individual persons or groups to decide as they see appropriate to honor their own.

I think it is entirely fitting and justified that the school district lower their flags. I also think it is proper, but not required, that the Superintendent issue a proclamation that recognizes the reason for lowering them.

If I were the Superintendent I might even honor the student by presenting the half-staffed flag to the family. As I believe you intended, the flag should be treated with great respect. Just as should we respect each other, one of many principles our flag represents.
