Hi, I'm going to be moving to Barnegat at the end of this year. I am coming from Staten Island, where I have lived my whole life. I never used to want to leave S.I. but it got too congested and the prices of houses is outrageously expensive. I also have my kids in private schools here.

Barnegat seems like a really nice place. I especially love being right at the shore. We spend practically our entire summers at the jersey shore now. If anyone could tell me about Barnegat like the schools etc. I would really appreciate it.

Cathy,
Welcom to town. I'm a Barnegat resident. I have two kids - a boy age 4 starting Kindergarten in the fall and a girl age 8 going into 4th grad in the fall. Th schools here are great. I moved here during the summer of 2004. Since then I have become really involved in the town activities and school things. Like any town there is always something more to be desired, but I love the town. Most everyone here trys hard to work together. We have a great rec program for youth athletics and a new town organization called the Barnegat Youth Sports United. It a group of parent who are members of variouse athletic organization that got together to work as one group to further the sports groups of the town.
The new HS is really nice and we'll have a new 4th elementary school befre long. My kids go to the Collins school, and the staff and teachers tere are really wonderful.

Welcome to town.

Heather,
Thank you for the info and for welcoming me. I have 3 boys. In the fall my oldest will be 15 and starting 10th grade. My middle son will be 10 and going into 5th grade and my little one will be 3 years old. My house is being built and will be ready in December. I just wish that I didn't have to take the kids out of school in the middle of the year. I'm very excited about moving though, I can't wait to get there. Maybe I will see you around since my son is only 1 grade above your daughter. Thank you again for responding,
Cathy

Cathy,

Since your shooting for December I'm guessing you're buying a Walter Home in Ocean Acres. You could always look into a short term rental that would let you move to Barnegat in August or so and stay till you close on the house. That way the kids can start school at the begining of the year. That's what I did, I rented a house for 3 months till I closed on my house. Moved in in July and closed on my house in October. It was really helpful for my daughter who was going into second grade and who's birthday is in October. She had the chance to make some friends before her birthday and the move to the new house was less stressfull since we already lived in town for a few months.

Thanks Heather, that is an idea, since I'm going to put my house on market next week. I hear the market is changing and houses aren't selling as fast as they were before. And yes, 3 boys in 3 totally different directions is crazy lol. I will e-mail you, Cathy

Hello Cathy, I don't mean to alarm you or Heather, But I moved here to Barnegat in Dec 06, I purchased my home in the Pebble Beach area, and what seemed like a great nieghborhood, turned into a nightmare for my wife and I.

We both retired, myself, because of my health although I'm not old (54) I suffered a heart attack at 48yrs old, My wife is 57 and a retired State of NJ Board of Education worker in the main office in Trenton.

We moved here from Toms River, and we were told by the realtor the area was so safe you could sleep with you doors unlocked, Ha Ha Ha , what a laugh and a lie that was. Pebble beach reminded me of our old nieghborhood in Snug Harbor in Toms River, NJ and we fell in love with this quaint 3 bedroom ranch here in Barnegat, right near the water, paradise right?? Boy was I misinformed... We heard and (witnessed) these 13-14 yr old hoodlums living here, and how the police have their hands full, and so do most of our nieghbors, until after we closed and moved in. I have had so many things happen to us since closing in Dec of 06, Our house was bombarded by debris from the back woods behind our property because as they roam through that wooded area, they smoke, curse and whatever it is else they do, and I had my 3yr old Grand Daughter here in the yard as they cursed and whooped and hollared for no good reason, I yelled at them to stop cursing, and it became open season on the me and my property.

I have been cursed at by this kids on a school bus, while reteiving my mail. They think because I have grey hair, I'm an old defensless man, My wife is so afraid to live here now, and though our Police force is mostly young energetic men and woman, They don't have a clue how to stop this rampage.

Just the other day, The day of the big fire, the kids were off from school, Well, they set another fire to our nieghbors yard and totally burn the guys stockade fence down, if it had not been for one of the other nieghbors the woods would have gone up, and all the while every area fire dept was on the scene fighting the big fire, I have never witnessed anything like it in my life!

Children with NO respect for anyone, or anything it's a real shame.. But good luck to you anyway, I hope you don't have to witness this terrorized way of life as we do right now.

You'll hear my views on all this and more , at the Town Hall Meeting this coming Monday! This should be an interesting meeting for sure! I hope all my nieghbors show up too, and stop living in fear , I won't anymore, it's time to take action NOW !!

Im young, 18, living with my parents and I dont like living here because of the kids who are around. I have a 15 year old sister who got caught with kids who have no respect, they come in the house, curse, dont say one word to you. joeyBones is right, none of these around here have respect and the police really dont know how to handle them. They will tell them to stay away from whereever they cause chaos but then the kids go right back and the cops do the same thing over and over. Other than that, i would have to say that I went to Southern Regional though and it is a very good school. If you wanted to move down this way i would tell you not to move to Barnegat but atleast Ocean Acres.

Hey I'm sorry to hear about your dilemma, I like you and what you seem to stand for, I cannot believe the attitudes of these 13, 14 and 15 year olds, it's like your the child , and they are the grown-ups.

I'm 54 yrs old, and raised three respectful children of my own, I have a son 32, and two daughters one is 30, the youngest is 28.. they would have never spoken to an adult in anyway that was condescending or arrogant, or I would have handled the punishment and they knew it. I never hit my children, but the I put the fear of ME into them, and god couldn't help them if them screwed up!

You need to keep your sister away from those hoodlums and try at least to teach her that they will cause her nothing but trouble.. I love children, and young adults, I coached football and baseball for 15 years in North Jersey before moving here, and I was respected by all because I gave my time to tutor them, and be like a father and a mentor to most of the kids I coached over the years.

But, here in Barnegat, it seems like they just don't care about respect and honor, starting fires in the woods, throwing debris on peoples property and just being typical bratty ass kids. and I blame the PARENTS, it is they and only they who can stop this nonsense and teach them right from wrong , or lower the boom on them, as I did with mine.

Unfortunately, You can't even touch or lay your hands on them, but lord knows, I wish I were 15 again for one day, and get to whoop their asses like I got whoop for being a wise guy by my Dad.

Hey don't give up with your sis, if you lose her to these hoodlums, it's another wasted life. You sound like a very nice guy with morals, try to teach those same moral to your sis.
Ciao,
Joeybones!

I think all towns have good and bad parts and I personally think Barnegat is nice BUT you should know that there is a nickname in Ocean County for Barnegat....BARNEGHETTO! I have heard it many times and just want you to be aware.

Interesting stuff about Barnegat and I'm sorry to hear about anyone's troubles, especially with troublesome teens. We are thinking of buying a summer home in Barnegat and wonder--is there any "bad" section of town? We liked Pebble Beach area too and now are re thinking. Also, is there anyone who has any information on the Oyster Creek Plant that would be of interest? It seems like there are health and safety issues regarding this that I read. Thanks!

I am not sure about the plant but I live in Little Egg Harbor and there are some very nice sections in the town. There are homes on the water as well. We are a litte more South, exit 58 on the GSP. I am a realtor so if you need any help do not hesitate to ask me. I am not sure if you can post email addresses on here or not, sometimes if you do they won't post your message on other sites.

Ocean Acres has problems with the kids roaming the streets at night and causing destruction to peoples' property. It seems like around here there isnt enough for them to do but get into some sort of trouble. I personally blame the town and cops because Id like to know where they all are and what they are doing to not stop these kids from causing mischief at all odd hours. Up north kids couldnt be out past 10pm.....down here they start walking the streets in Ocean acres at about that time.

Hi Cathy,
I live in Manahawkin and love it here. My children go to All Saints Regional Catholic School. I am totally in love with the school. I hear the public schools are over crowded but don't know first hand. The taxes in Barnegat are higher than in Manahawkin and we have much better shopping. Hope this helps.

We never had a problem with anything until it got overcrowded.

We did used to keep our doors open.. not anymore..

The city people are bringing their city problems with them!

I have been a resident of Barnegat Township for over 30 years, in different sections of town, and never had any type of problems. The problem now with Barnegat is that it is too over crowded. I find that within the last 10 years the families moving in don't control their children. They say "not my child" instead of saying to the children "you're guilty until proven innocent". My son went throught the entire school system here and he turned out great as did all of his friends. They expect everyone else to take care of their children instead of them.

Barnegat has always been a great town to live in.

Just another supporting note about Barnegat.

I moved here 17 years ago because I was looking for one home I could raise a family in and because of the school district. Barnegat has it's good and bad, and I tend to agree with the last two posts - the rapid population growth brought in a different adult mentality. You can find those parents who take that responsibility to heart - and you can find those parents who live vicariously thru their children - trying more to be their child's friend and cool hip mom - than being the adult authoritarian in that relationship.
So please have your eyes wide open to the "type" of neighborhood perception you take as a first impression.
The twp committee and school district are going through some major issues and will most likely be restructured in the spring - but the community at large and the school staff are genuinely committed trying to work with the growing pains.
Good Luck

Lisa, I just read your post, and I have been here for almost a year now, and your absolutely right, there are good and bad parts to every town, But to blame any of the townships problems on being overcrowed is not what drives a young adult to crime, distruction or just being disrespectful..
That all comes from how a child is raised and brought up.. But My wife and I love it here, even though I have had my many incidents when we first purchased our home, Our taxes have been raised almost 1,300.00 dollars a year, because of the school tax your speaking about, Obviously I am not a huge supporter of the increase in our taxes, because all my children are grown, and raising families of their own.. But on a whole, the town is a very nice place to live and raise a family, as long as the parents do their part in taming these wild kids who feed off of destruction , drugs, and disrespectfulness..
Pebble Beach is a very nice waterfront community, with beautiful homes , and the only problem I see here are these hoodlums who ruin it for everyone.. I hope everything works out with the school board and they work out their problems, and most of these kids start to realize, they live here too, and try to make it a nice safe place to live for all of us. Parents please do you part in helping make Barnegat a safer town to live in.
Thanks.
