City Director Kevin Settle wants to extend an olive branch to Barling? He wants to help them grow and prosper? I donít know how zoning works in Barling, but does the city fall under Fort Smithís planning, zoning and regulations? If not, what is the advantage? Fort Smith zoning, planning and regulations could possibly kill small business and startups in Barling. And surely Barling doesnít need the politics of Fort Smith, or do they?

Kevin was quoted in the paper as saying,ďI just wanted them to be able to grow and prosper. Even Barling, left to itself has grown 11.4% versus Fort Smith at 7%, since the year 2000. Fayetteville has grown at 27.3%, Conway 37.4%, Jonesboro 21.5%, Rogers 45.5%, Springdale 53.2%, Bentonville 80.2% and Van Buren 20.1% since the year 2000. And Kevin wants to help Barling?

Maybe Barling should try and solve its liquor problem without Kevinís help?

Looks like to me if FS annexed Barling, FS would grow and prosper at the expense of Barling not Barling, since it would then be FS? I guess that is one way for FS to try and keep up with everyone else?

Barling does not need to be a part of FS and have the zoning or UDO regulations, stay as you are Barling. You will be better off in the long run.

I know person that moved thier long time business in Fort Smith to Barling. There was NO problems or BS like they had with they had with FS building department. No delays in last minute, " there still has to be something wrong here", reviews.

They found it nice the city actually worked with them on a remodel of a existing building. Same people did a remodel here in FS, it was "hassel time" from start to finish...same type of renovation both places....

At least Settle has a solution. Give one credible solution to solve the liquor issue caused by Judge Tabor's ruling. If you can you will earn my respect if not sit back down on the "Crazy Train" Jack....

"Ozzy",

First, I think it was very arrogant of Kevin to "extend the olive branch" to Barling, without first touching base with someone from Barling.

Before solving Barling problems, maybe Kevin should seek to solve the problems of Fort Smith's first.

With that said, One would think Barling could appeal the ruling.

The appeal is a solution. I say respectfully that is a step in the right direction. Lets run with solutions.... What if Fort Smith temporarily annexed the property until the city of Barling could fight their court battle or bring a county wide vote to the ballet? The developer wins, Barling wins, Fort Smith wins.

Ps. Who cares if protocol is met when a real solution is offered for the problem.

And lastly economic growth for Barling is Economic growth for Fort Smith and economic growth is the only real solution to Fort Smith's problems.... I think agree on that.

Ozzy",
With all respect, Jerry Barling the mayor along with the citizens of Barling are very capable of solving their liquor issue. They don't need Fort Smith city director Kevin Settle to, "extend an olive branch" to them.

A wise man weighs all of the options presented and makes a decision based on the best information. Annexation was not an option before the olive branch was extended. I am sure Mayor Barling and the citizens will do what is best for their city. Im glad you (a citizen of Fort Smith) knows what they don't need. Your hypocrisy puts you back on the crazy train.

Hypocrisy- The practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense.

Hey...Settle's just wanting to open up a little more territory for Patty Keck to drive around in so when she has a head-on crash and kills someone, it may not be a Fort Smith resident and their family.

the citizens of fort smith are not allowed to have opinions and should blindly follow the "leader" and if you dare disagree with the "leader" then the city attack dogs start attacking your wife! is it any wonder why fort smith has lost over 13,000 jobs and has no growth?

Regardless. We are talking We are considering. If this idea is not viable then a new idea may sprout up.

Because it started with your nemisis, you are against it and are trying to polarize opinions. Stop. You are blinded by hate and that, Liberty13, is what holds us back more than anything else.

Liberty13 is trying to show what is going on. Then the citizens of FS and Barling can decide for themselves, without any bullying from any particular group of people.

Liberty, you're not showing us the light, if anything, you're the bully. You didn't go the the director's meeting, and from your writing, you only know what you read in an article. You speak from a smidgen of information. You are trying to make Settle the bad guy by ginning up negativity.

The only thing anyone else sees is that he is discussing something he didn't check with you first to see whether or not you approve. You are nothing short of a vindictive person. Your hate gets in the way of your brain. It's pathetic.

Kevin is calling the play he has been called on to play. The arrogance in which he acted is typical of how we play in Fort Smith.

Lord knows, no one has to check with me for anything, but Kevin Settle could have had the common courtesy to at least touch base with someone from the city of Barling before extending his little "olive branch".

How do you know I wasn't hiding behind glassed room last Tuesday during the meeting?

...that this "thing" between you and Kevin Settle is personal

You call Kevin Settle arrogant? Where is there not arrogance, especially in leadership roles. You're arrogant. I'm arrogant. I would bet most of your personal heroes are/were arrogant.

Was Mr. Settle premature in broaching the subject publicly? Probably so. Yo see it as a grandstanding move, but maybe it was a tactic to get the subject to a public dialog before squelched in secrecy. No one ever thought such thoughts a week ago and we are sure talking about it now.

The point is neither about bravado or style. An idea was presented...figuratively an egg of an idea. Settle merely called out to see if it was worth incubating. If so, we have a concept to spur the development of the eastern gateway into Fort Smith. If not, the egg goes untouched and all parties walk away -- one knowing they tried and the other knowing they stepped off first. It's quite possible we might end up with a rather tasty chicken (and be able to serve it with wine).

Whatever!! but the approach, the blind sided approach to Barling officials and the people of Barling was in very poor taste.
