So what if the employees of KCEOC have a membership to the Center. Who do you think does the payroll and such? KCEOC employee!
It isn't going to kill one of Union's students to pay for a membership anyway (like the rest of Knox County). Hell, 99% of them are from out of state getting a free ride anyway. Free Room and Board, free books, supplies, etc. The other 1% gets grants, ect...$$$ that does not have to be paid back like a loan!
Leave KCEOC alone... they may just take the Home they built for you, the apartment you are living in, the air conditioning you have in the summer, the heat you have in the winter, the food that feeds your children's mouths all summer long, the free passes to the water park or even the electricity that lights the home they've provided for you or the telephone that allows you communication... ALL FOR FREE!
KCEOC is dedicated to Community Action! It is doing it's job well! Again... look at the heating/cooling/electricity/ap artment/housing/food/education programs!
To be honest, you probably would not even have internet access if it wasn't for KCEOC! If you don't like it, keep complaining and see how it feels to actually have to pay rent or a mortgage!
Sorry, but true!
I dont what your going on about but UNION students dont get a free ride at all- none of them do. you dont know what you are talking about they pay there way and pay for that school to be open and we pay for our membership.

I agree with that She has little care for anybody except for her swim team. Things need to change!, Dee has too much power and she doesn't know how to use it. I have been a lifeguard for 5 years and have never seen someone in authority with so little of organization.

As a person that is at the stivers pool frequently i observe how Dee Dole, the person in charge of the pool, makes decisions. i think that she cares to much about looking good in front of people instead of actually doing her job. i had a incident with her where i owed the pool money, and agreed to pay it. when i got the amount i felt as if i was being charged more then i should be, i went to her office asking if i could see the receipts. The whole time i was talking to her she was being sarcastic and being a smart aleck. After requesting what i asked for, Dee got hot headed and started yelling, even after i tried apologizing. Dee then banned me from the pool, as a swimmer i have my biggest and most important meet of the year at home. This is the meet i have been training for all season and i feel as if the punishment doesn't fit. she is overusing her power and things need to be different. i shouldn't be suspended from my most important meet because of a little argument.

YOU DAMAGED PROPERTY AT THE STIVERS CENTER!And you are a Union swimmer that thinks you own the place and your story is far from true! She had every right to charge you! And to everyone else.. Dee has done so much for the center since she took it over! She has put many programs in place and has lowered the memberships and has put in a sliding scale for those who cant afford the regular prices. She doesn't hire all swimmers either! She hires people she knows and trusts to do the job correctly. AND she doesn't even get paid for the work she does. She doesn't get reimbursed for the money she spends and she has to deal with a board every week where they tell her what she can and cannot do! Also, this center was not built for Union it was built for the community of Barbourville. You people are so ignorant and hateful. Half of you come into the center and misuse the property and destroy everything in it. The equipment is all of Unions old stuff. So, its not going to be good because its hand me downs. And Dee would do anything for the kids that go there. All of you are so unappreciative! Grow Up!!! Also, the therapy pool is going to be warm because the water is heated and the room is small. Therefore, its going to be a tad bit warm. The center is a great place to go so do not be discouraged by others opinions. Try it out for yourself. You have no idea what Dee and the center go through on a daily basis so you have no right o to judge.

Again- why did this lady and 40 parents of the swim team get a pool with government funds? Furthermore, do we want a private college to utilize public funds to their benefit of the pool? Such a misguided project. Why not have built 1/3 the facility, used funds to outreach to all kids, including the poor and at-risk? How can they pay the electricity, chemicals, maintenence fees on this facility? Is this lady the manager, owner, oversee the staff, what? So selfish of her to have influence to get an "Olympic Mecca" for Barbourville, when a small pool and exercise equipment would have sufficed?
Person with no formal finance background makes this observation . Who owned the land that was sold for the center? Is there 8 million dollars in this facility? Who voted on the committee to build this facility , knowing the obvious financial obligations that would be incurred in day to day operations? Who hired the manager who is the wife of the KCEOC director? How many poor and elderly get to use this facility?
The only solution appears to be to fill the pool in and try to salvage a portion for exercise weight lifting and maybe some basketball or raquet type sports . There is no way to get enough people from even the tri- county area to buy a membership . West knox folks go to baptist fitness the Stivers is 90 percent for the 56 kids on the piranhas and for the hs school teams .
Whst a selfish greedy shame . Shame shame on the ones who built it or agreed to do it for personal gain. No way can the pool be operated without substantial losses - had to have been known when built

The people who were against the center from the beginning and have held it back at every oportunity are the ones who cant figure out a way to steal from it . Some in the area would rather steal "pop" money than see something succeed that competes with their pocket change.

The swim team has first choice always and if she wants she will cancel a birthday party or anything else. So the team can practice and they wonder why people don't buy memberships or go there to swim as a community umm .

Appears that the facility was constructed to benefit individuals Who owned the land that was sold for this cement pond? Who approved the project? There is no agency or private firm that could develop a plan or generate revenue to operate this pool. Be a hard sell even in a metropolitan area with a population in excess of 80,000 people. What was the real reason to build this pool - this big, at this location and with the obvious incapacity to sustain it? Our community has been taken from once again. So villainous for those who were greedy, selfish and self serving to take advantage - must have known the outcome- our children and elderly could have benefitted - no common concern - could have built a smaller feasible facility

The center was built for the entire community and surrounding counties. Swim teams from North Laurel, South Laurel, Barbourville City, Corbin City, Knox Central and other schools use the pool for practice and meets. There was no hidden agenda behind the project. The center with the olympic size pool allows "OUR" high schoolers to possibly receive scholarships. How could this possibly be a negative thing. No pockets are being lined, no funds misused, no shady deals under the table or anything negative of that nature. As with a lot of projects, unpredictable things happen, the gas well for example. How about we all pull together as a community and try to make this work for the kids? Don't our kids deserve the same opportunities as thosein Lexington or Louisvile? I think so and so do a lot of other caring people.

Here's the irrationality : example: you have a few people in S E Kentucky for example who love hockey and their kid is a hockey player . You are in a position to get funding for recreation/wellness . You have 50-100 kids out of 25000 in your community who wants to play . You listen to no reasoning no rational and think solely about those 100 vs the 25000 population . You ignore them for your own selfish interests. So you build a fine ice rink for the "wellness" of "all" .... It costs 300k to operate - you know that this is not feasible before you start nor will it be able to sustain .... THIS IS TOTALLY WRONG !!! This rationale and selfishness is how we got a state of the art pool that is too expensive to maintain- built too big, too many utilities too few membership payment possibilities and ignored the obvious . The city needs to disban the "Tourism" board and handle it themselves before they spend 65,000 more dollars on pvc, wire ,and xmas lights on another stupid 12 days of xmas idea..they are tacky and ineffective as tourist attractions doing nothing to stimulate local economy, while the Stivers center has proven that it can draw thousands of people into the city several times a year.

I agree 100%! Just in the paper last month or so they had an article saying they couldn't pay their bills and may have to close. This is a poor community and their membership fees are astronomical.

mayor west said these fees were not high and made the suggestion to raise the rates or even add on a tax to help pay the monthly bills
