With warm weather approaching, I have a question about where to find a thermostat. I have an older model Whirlpool 220 window a.c. It cools the whole house great. However, the thermostat does not cycle on and off. If you do not manually turn the a.c. on and off, it will ice completely up. I would like to find a someone in the Knox Co. area who would have a thermostat for it. I looked online, and a thermostat is $150.00, plus shipping. That's a lot to spend on an old unit. The strange thing is, if the a.c. is left off for a few days, the thermostat works great for 2-3 days before quitting again. The filter and grill are clean, so that is not a problem. Any help will be appreciated.

I forgot to mention, in my above post, that my spouse has a breathing problem which is made worse by hot weather. This a.c. cannot be used at night unless you constantly get up and down all night to turn it on and off. Obviously, if we had the money, we'd simply buy a new one. Since we have little money, that means we're trying to fix this one.

even though the unit adequately cools the space,it sounds like it needs a charge of freon, when the freon levels are low(particularly in older units),the coils will tend to ice up , over a period of time this can damage the compressor for over compensating and running high constantly, and make sure that the exhaust fan(rear outside exposed blower) enclosure is free of any debris(leaf material, dirt accumulation, dust)the thermostats can fail, but it doesn't happen often, they usually last as long the units, try asking a AC maintenance company if they service window units,to come out and charge it for you,it's a lot less costly than replacing a thermostat that may not need to be changed

Clean the whole air conditioner. clean the thermostat with electronic cleaner you can buy it at advance auto. Just spray the thermostat full of it. make sure you unplug it from the power and let it dry for a while before using it.

Spray the thermostat full of cleaner then turn the thermostat knob back and forth to get it clean. I do mine every year and i've had it for many year's.

I have a similar unit that does something like that. My thermostat sticks. It either the compressor stays on or off. Sometimes it works for several hours but eventually it sticks. I have to monitor it.
I noticed that the thermostat has two adjustment screws. One is to make the thermostat colder. It is marked Colder with a arrow pointing in the direction to make it colder. However there is a Torx screw at the top of the thermometer that I am not sure does. When I turn it it seems to increase or decrease the tension of the the internal coil or spring. Not sure which. I can decrease it to the point where it is barely heard clicking or I can increase and it makes the clicking louder. However it does not seem to fix my problem. I have tried to find a replacement with no luck so I am trying to fix this one. I have sprayed it heavily with a WD-40 type lube to no avail.
Any ideas anyone?
