Its decent. 30-40k a year.

Some companies will pay for your school, some won't.
You can go to the school for about 3-4k.
You can just go take the test if you have someone willing to loan you their truck. You have to have some understanding of the braking systems for the written test.

Problem is, without the school, or experience alot of companies wont touch you even if you have your license.

I am not a truck driver but considered it at one time myself.

The first guy should have been more specific about what type of truck driving. You don't have to have CDL's to drive a CAT777 back-dump on a strip job or on a road construction site. I use to drive those myself. It's a decent job after you get use to the truck, but it's also quite boring after around dinner time. Back and forth, all-day long for the most part. They're even automatics!

I assumed he was talking about OTR. I drive a small d700 mack when I am home(helps with boredom) and I don't have CDLs, however the truck isn't licensed anyway and its only used on small, off road, construction sites.

the big companies will pay for school but you have to sign with them for 1 to 3 years, depending on the co. you can make 30 to 50 k a year, depending on single driver or have a co driver. car carries make way more. you can stay out for a week, 2 weeks or month, your choice. if you have a family , wife an children, it is stressful to be away all the time. , co drive with wife, best of both worlds. but without kids. pro. great money, see the country, not boring, con, away from home, live out of a suitcase. always eat out.

Pros- Great money (after you get your time in), Short inexpensive training, Travel, Get to see the world while getting payed.

Cons- Hard on a family man (someone with wife/kids), Not much home time, They all say you get this or that which isn't true for most, It's expensive living out of a bag and on the road.

Most companies will not hire you unless you have atleast 6mo to a year of OTR experince. Once you get time in you can find dedicated runs so you can be home either every weekend or maybe even get lucky and be home nighly with the same pay as an OTR driver.

Good Luck!

1st thing go to CDC in London they will get your cdls unless youre just a complete dumbass. The new test is almost impossible to pass unless you go to school. And as someone said most companies wont hire you without schooling. Youll have to go OTR for 2-3 yrs before you can work around home, dont believe me call a few places and ask how much experience they require. If youre single stay out as long as you can some companies look at miles vs yrs if you have a family be prepared for a divorce unless you have a real good woman.Home time varies you might get in for the wkend for 6 months straight then not see a wkend at home for 2 months. pay wise average is 30-35 cents per mile at about 2500 miles a wk. If someone says youll have 3-4000 mile wks theyre lyin or youll run illegal. Ive been rolling for 2 yrs and love it but you have to have your whole heart in it or itll kill ya

Is trucking a good job? It is a good paying job, and you don't have to waste years to graduate to find out if it is a good job or not. Just do it, and with the money you will be making save it, then you have choice if it is for you or not. You have nothing to loose by giving it a try. In fact you maybe able save enough to provide you for months or years while you go to school if you decide to do something else.

You know trucking is best when you are single or you have a gf wife etc, but no kids. You can actually live in your truck make 50k a year without bills except maybe the cellphone. Save every penny you make, and retire early.
