Contrary to popular opinion, Lincoln did not set the slaves free. In a letter to Horace Greeley (Editor of the New York Tribune) Lincoln said and I quote :"The sooner the national authority can be restored, the nearer the Union will be the Union as it was. If there would be those who would not save the Union, unless they could save slavery, I do not agree with them.

If there would be those that would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them either. My paramount objective in this struggle is to save the Union and it is neither to save or destroy slavery". END QUOTE.

Stereotype all "dope" (i.e. marijuana only) smokers as 'dumbed down', why doncha?! FYI I'm the primary FIJA (Fully Informed Jury Association) affiliate in my area ... do YOU even know what the RIGHT of 'jury nullification' is OR did reactionary Neo-Cons like the late Robert Bork brainwash you into believing that it is a "subversive anarcho-commie plot"?!

Bernard .. I commend you Sir, you have summed up in a small paragraph what others could not in a short book. It is not the chemical that dictates a mans path, but the man. I am pleased to see accurate command of both language and logic, it's much needed in this place. Thank you for making my trip to forum something new.

After much opinions, arguments, and advice from abolitionists and political cronies and when Lincoln did think the timing was better (after Antietam), he did make his second term objective to freeing the slaves, but it was the CONGRESS (without the seceding states) that did the actual freeing.

Initially, it was only effective in the seceding states excluding certain counties and the 2 border states of Kentucky and Maryland. Additionally, it did not free the women and children but only the males that would enlist to bolster up the declining Union forces. So to say that Lincoln freed the slaves is not entirely correct.

Acording to his own personal letters to Horace Greeley on August 22, 1862 and others including a Chicago religous group. On January 1, 1863 he did make the Proclamation that freed the slaves but only in the rebellious states and territories that had already come under Federal Control and in doing so he declared that he was not doing that as the President but only within the narrow margins of being the military Commander-in-chief.

No wealthy teachers in Kentucky. I wasn't around when the tests were dumbed down, but I was a student under the KERA initiative so I'm familiar with the type of education you're talking about. I can tell you that things are getting better and tests are getting harder!

I hope so but I don't like to set my goals too high. Took me 3 attempts to pass it the first time it was offered. I don't remember that school very well. Seems like there were a lot of stairs there. I do remember that year the Titanic sank. Everything else is just a blur.
