why does construction sign say "give them a break"?

Slow down in your car..."give them(your car) a break" You're supposed to slow down in a construction zone.

they want you to slow down while in the area they are working on the road. they figured that would get your attention.

It says BRAKE, meaning slow down, hit your brakes to keep the workers safe!

I thought it meant the workers needed a break from work or that we should give them a break for them doing a crappy job last time on the railroad tracks.
