On Friday, February 15, a major asteroid will miss Earth by less than 15 minutes. It will "fly-by" at a closer distance to us than the location of the weather and communications satellites we have in space. Since this thing is 1/2 mile or more in size It would cause a lot of damage if it were to collide with Earth.

Close but not quite correct.... First it's not meteor it is an asteroid (2012 DA14) and second it is only 150 foot across... no where near a 1/2 mile wide...

First, I never said it is a meteor...read the post title. Second, the first data released on Asteroid 2012 DA14 estimated it to be a half mile or more in size. They now say 50 meters, which is much larger than the 150 feet you say. Were it to strike Earth, which it will not, it would cause massive destruction. Traveling at between 12,427 MPH and 30,000MPH--around 5 miles per second, or 5 times the speed of a rifle bullett--the asteroid will fly inside the orbits of high geostationary satellites above the Earth. Scientists fear the asteroid could collide with one of the more than 100 telecommunications satellites and/or weather satellites in fixed orbit above the Earth. If it were to hit the right one, it could knock-out your cell phone or satellite tv service.

I have no idea why I saw Meteor .. But I swear that's what I thought it said... My bad... I'm Old...

From NASA...

"Asteroid 2012 DA14 is a little guy, compared to some asteroids, although its size has not been pinned down precisely. It is thought to be about 45 meters across (nearly 150 feet across), with an estimated mass of about 130,000 metric tons."

It probably stems from your obessesion that any comment that is made by anyone besides you is wrong. Sometimes just a big cup of "stfu" goes a long way.

All the experts say this Asteroid is not going to hit Earth. Well today a meteor shower hit Russia. Coincidence? I think they are connected and more will hit other parts of the world as this Asteroid makes its pass. But we don't need to worry according to the govt. That alone makes me wonder.

You can joke all you want but you might just get what you ask for if your not careful. It wont be a joke to you if it hurts you or some of your family. There was over 400 people that got hurt.I would say their not laughing very much right now,an neither would you.

I do have to make a correction,it was a single meteor, not a shower. Latest reports over one thousand injured.

Scientists are now saying the meteor's explosive power was greater than first thought. California residents reported seeing blue fire in the skies before the meteor hit Russia. Maybe we are overdue for a real major catastrophy from outerspace and it wouldn't surprise me if the Govt. knows it and is making preparations with all the construction they have going on that is so hush hush. Maybe it's not about a govt. takeover as much as a stellar event the likes of which wiped out life here before. Just food for thought.

Correction again. The blue lights were seen by San Francisco resident hours after the meteor hit. Might have been Carnivel lights from Mexico being seen by the "happy" residents from san fagcisco.
