If you live in Tennessee you must sell it in Tennessee. Don't bring it over state lines. You will get in BIG trouble.

You must not be a REAL root buyer...Do you have a license to buy? If so, you better read the fine print in the papers they sent you. NO ROOTS ARE ALOUD TO LEAVE THE STATES FROM WHICH THEY WERE DUG! UNTIL YOU HAVE THE ROOTS CERTIFIED BY THE STATE OF KENTUCKY (FRANKFORT). This is not a Kentucky rule, its a US Government rule! You can't buy anything not dug in the state of Ky if your a buyer from the state of Ky....You can go to Tennessee and buy roots if you have a license from Tennessee, but you will need to get your roots certified from TENN. before you can leave the state with them.

So before you question my knowledge of the rules...I've been a dealer for the last 20 yrs until this year. Why don't you give me your address and I'll have the US forestry dept come by your place to make sure your in compliance with all the rules. Did you pay the $75 license fee? Do you have all your paperwork from the diggers? Do you have a certified scale to weigh the roots with? I personally know of 8 dealers in SE KY. that were fined $8,000. each for buying illegal roots (out of state, before the season, etc.)....I've handled more roots than you have EVER seen.

Go to the state of kentucky website...Agriculture dept...and check out the rules if you don't believe me.

Does anyone have any idea what Shaded Ginseng might be going for? Root and seed? Is it really worth the time and money to grow it this way?
Thanks for any information!

and please don't even try and compare the quality of ginseng from Ky to NC....its not even close.
also, be VERY careful when you sell individual roots....they are cherry picking what THEY want. Then you will never get rid of the "leftovers".
what happens to you?

you must have a license to buy ginseng and then those dealers must have the roots certifide in Frankfort and also must pay a per pound fee for each pound being shipped out of the state. If you take it out of the state without the proper paperwork the US Forest Service will take all your roots and fine you $5000. and they can put you in jail. I know several dealers who received fines and lost the roots also....they had to appear in Federal Court in London.
The state is making it to where its almost impossible for dealers to make any money, so in the near future look for them to close the buying and selling all together. Every year for the past 5 yrs they have tighten the rules. They have to do something about the over harvesting or it will be gone from this state altogether.
Wow is even worth the trouble.

I wish someone on here knew what they were talking about. SO with that said , I can tell you all that ginseng CAN be planted and is NOT considered a commercial root if planted in a wild environment. It takes two frost for the seed to come up as a single leaf plant and 8 to 10 years to mature. You can also purchase seed from most buyers during season and if your an avid digger i feel its only proper to contribute part of your profit back to nature by starting new seed where it has not yet been introduced. I have also transplanted mature plants whole after planting any existing berries , there is no law saying you can not remove the entire plant . Its more work but once you put these plants in the ground where you want them you will have seed every year to build your money crop. hope this info helped out ! AND BY THE WAY I GOT 725.00 a pound in ohio

Ohio river ginseng has several smaller dealers around southern ohio , my local buyer purchases it for them on a percentage. And of this week he has quoted a starting price of 90 to 150.00 for wet roots. depending on quality and county .
