And yes vampires are real, there are several books about them, and there have been eyewitness reports.

Gong.
Some of the most abhorrent behaviors in mankinds history were based on Lack of decency, respect of and for others, and a lot of conquesting and power grabbing and abuses of the same.
Actually the Inquisition was civil code and set the actions and lifestyles of all it could control, was the religious/government prime civil code and anyone not following the codes of conduct set forth were arrested, jailed, tortured and killed... Decency is a Variable based on the norms at the time... What would be called Decent today would have been considered an abomination in the past and thing in the past that were considered decent would be considered abhorrent today... Respect is Earned, If given without being earned it has no value.... Religions are based on conquest, power grabbing and abuse... Also human ego run amuck....

I've been reading the Bible. Well, "listening" to it anyway. I've read bits and pieces before, like most of us have. But I wanted to try to read as much as possible. For giggles.

Some observations so far:

1) First words uttered by a woman lead to every single person being born broken and requiring God to fix us.

2) Second time a woman speaks it is Sarai, wife of Abraham. And the context is that Abraham, scared that Egyptians are going to kill him to steal his wife, tells her to tell them she is his sister. So, y'know, that way she'll be taken for a wife by some strange man but ole Abe will be just alright. Nice start for the father of all the Biblical religions. Consequently, that is not the only time a Biblical patriarch pulls that exact same ruse.

3) When the daughter of Jacob (who later becomes Israel) has sex with a boy who falls in love with her, the girl's brothers are angered. So they trick the Canaanites into circumcising themselves to become allies. Then, while the men are sore, they kill 'em all and take their women. Jacob, one of the most crucial figures in the old Bible, is angry. But not because of the murdering...he's irritated that his reputation is tarnished and now he will have to move again. God, it seems, has absolutely nothing to say about this.

4) God basically gives two orders near the beginning. He tells Adam and Eve not to eat fruit from a certain tree (which he conveniently places right in their midst and makes it extremely tasty), and not to kill people. That's it. Just don't kill people and don't eat this fruit. So of course they eat the fruit and we all suffer now. And later, in that Jacob story I mentioned, his people absolutely sh*t all over his other divine edict by slaughtering every man in a certain city. And yeah...God says nothing.

What a weird old book. Genesis is as irrational as it gets. When read literally it makes no sense at all. I don't understand how a modern person could possibly read this book as anything other than mythology. And I damn sure don't see where anybody gets morals from it. I haven't seen anyone in Genesis promote any universally held moral instinct that we promote today. If they spare someone's life it is not because it is wrong to kill, but because of some other reason. If they kill people, sometimes nothing is said and sometimes they are punished. There is no consistency there. Woman are objects for trading and f*cking and taking care of the little ones. Hell, the wife of Noah is just as important as Eve right? All the other women were dead. She is the new Eve. But the Bible doesn't even tell us her name.

Because who cares, right? She's just a vagina with legs, by Biblical standards.

And what about that bastard Jacob? When his father Isaac is old and blind and ready to die he is going to bestow his blessings on his son, Esau. His blessings are the blessings of the God of Abraham, so it is a very big deal.

So Jacob, his other son, is told by his mother to trick Isaac into thinking he is Esau so he can get the blessings instead. So he does. And Isaac mistakenly blesses Jacob with God's blessings instead of Esau.

So Jacob becomes the most important character in the Bible for a long time and is actually named Israel by a wrestler. That means the entire Biblical lineage of the chosen people comes from a lie.

And Jacob goes on and lives a long life with wives and many children and riches out the yazoo. And he never regrets or even mentions it again.

And what an a-hole he is anyway. He does nothing in that entire book that is worth respect or admiration. He lies, cheats, condones murder, and is kind of an idiot really.

Ah well.

The inquisition was still wrong; proselytizing by the blade of a sword was wrong before the Spanish Inquisition. Besides, the Muslims had invaded and conquered Spain until Europe woke up. Those were bizarre times and weird civil codes were the least of the problem.

Morality is constant, murder is wrong and God said so in the Bible. Face facts, murder has been wrong since the myth of Cain and Abel. Not a fashion like manners, courtesy or diversity; right and wrong are basic moral facts. Ancient Greeks proposed utilitarian and idealistic moral codes thousands of years ago. There've been improvements...

Everyone deserves respect unless they are convicted of abusing the freedom of others. You have a right to radical atheist beliefs and we have a right to religious faith. All the same thing really, except we understand the difference between faith based and pseudoscience. Punish criminals respect can be lost but never stolen.

Modern religions are based on faith in God and accepting human fallibility. Question your environment and learn the truth.

Don't blame women, that's not the moral of the story. The moral is, men and women are different, just like humans are different from God or animals. The snake is the devil, not Eve.

Exodus and the Ten Commandments help. Even Abel's murder is condemned, though uniquely, not with capital punishment. I support capital punishment; this is where we differ.

It's best to study the bible with someone who respects religion and women both. Biblical patriarchy don't define our society and government.

They call Christians sexist because of the way they read the bible. I find that problematic at best. I don't blame Christians, I blame the ACLU.

The EPA and IRS are government agencies. I don't call my political opponents communists or other names. We know who they are. The ACLU and NAACP used to be relevant, now they're bored.

They want to defame our religions and cultural institutions to further their political goals. Socialists and Progressives should be included, not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Plus, with such high numbers of christians raping children they should not be allowed in schools period
Thanks again!

I'm not interested in discussing religion with a forum troll. Your replies here are either total dodges ("times change"??) or non-sequiturs (a refernce to Al-f*cking-Gore??). It's a waste of my time even reading them.

But I will offer this, not for your sake but because its on my mind. I do actually enjoy reading about religions. And I have studied the Bible before, not in an attempt to ridicule it but to understand what it is. I enjoy reading Biblical criticism. I like understanding the difference between Modern Biblical Scholarship and Ancient Biblical Scholarship. Frankly, reading these old stories is a great exercise in critical thinking.

Regarding the Bible and modern Christianity, I find it strange that Christians can claim to use the Bible as a moral authority when it clearly has no moral consistency. You or someone else mentioned the fact that murder has always been unacceptable. And in some cases God does punish murderers to some degree. But in other cases it is ignored, as in the sons of Jacob murdering all the men of a city after lying to them. No punishment, not even a stern warning. Yet a few chapters later it is mentioned in passing that there was a guy (Er?) who God felt was wicked...so he killed him. No reason. Just did it.
