Nancy was involved in a greyhound bus wreck. She could ride free from that point on. I think she lived in the bell county area. She was a very interesting lady.

She is known through the u.s. Someone should write a book on her and other knox co. legends. How about the martin sisters, amd mary francis???.Now, that would make some very interesting reading. I heard that mary francis made a lot of trips to emmanuel holler, and not by herself.

I remember her and yes she was gary colman's grandmother, I remember her most at the election day polls, she in her little hat, no teeth, layers of dresses and the sweater. her eyes would dissapear when she laughed. and she did not laugh ha ha she laughted tee hee. was so funny but she was the first to state her mind. She never met stranger from the bag lady to the president. she was herself, something we could all learn from . she was no better or no worse than anyone else. I dont know where she lived or how she lived but she was always happy and not to be messed with, that is a fond memeory back in the day, I loved election day, more of a social event an all day meeting. and always walking on the road. and waving at everyone.

I remember Nancy Rabbit. I was 10 years old in 1947 and yes, I remember her walking around the town square in Barbourville. This was before the new Knox County court house was built. She was a curiosity to me as their was not that many black folks around.

Nancy would come to Barbourville, visted alot in courthouse. Friends like John Dixon,Floyd Sowders.Sam Knuckles. She would go to the college corner and have a orange soda. She would not go to movies because blacks had to sit upstairs. I was only 9 at that time but I rember her well. We used to ask her how many rabbits she had. She was a very nice person. I regret picking on her.

I did not do much searching but heres a nice place to read about our little town back in the day.... Maybe you can find an article about the sisters.. I Know I saw a photo of them in a Band... and the bass drum had the Martins Sisters on the drum skin... I'm looking for where I saw that and will get back to you if I find the photo but did find this which is very interesting too..

I recall Nancy well, she would come into town with her little hat on and sit on the benches @ the courthouse square to visit with people, she was the first person of color that I had ever met, the first time I saw her I tried to rub the black off her arm, she just laughed and told me that she was that color all over, I was about 5 yrs old @ that time, she would come to our home and stay a few days, bathe and wash her clothing before she left, in the evenings we would sit around while she told us stories of where she had been and things that happened to her a lot of these things were not pretty and mom would find something for us to do to get us away so Nancy could talk, She took us through the black community of B'ville that we never knew existed. Mom would say "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". We also knew the Martin sisters , we took piano lessons from them, we visited that grave many times, they had never cut their hair and it was near their knees or longer. They were good people.
