EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Without a first class system of interstate highways, life in America would be far different --- it would be more risky, less prosperous, and lacking in the efficiency and comfort that Americans now enjoy and take for granted. People would be crowded into more densely packed inner cities, intercity travel would occur less often and be more cumbersome; freight charges would be higher and, as a consequence, so would prices. Vacation travel would be more restricted.
The Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highways is in place and celebrating its 40th anniversary, must surely be the best investment a nation ever made. Consider this:
It has enriched the quality of life for virtually every American.
It has saved the lives of at least 187,000 people.
It has prevented injuries to nearly 12 million people.
It has returned more than $6 in economic productivity for each $1 it cost.
It has positioned the nation for improved international competitiveness.
It has permitted the cherished freedom of personal mobility to flourish.
It has enhanced international security.
It is not an exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact, that the interstate highway system is an engine that has driven 40 years of unprecedented prosperity and positioned the United States to remain the world's pre-eminent power into the 21st century.

oh lQQkie, the teabagger CON socks not reading posts but commenting on them all, rewriting them, spinning their slurs and lies like the good little lemming tools they are. SOS, just a different day.

Let's start with the )8~D> batshit crazy LISA loon rhetoric and fauxbox propaganda. hahahaha

McConnell Whines About Obamacare Liars

After Harry Reid went to the Senate floor and called out the Obamacare liars, Mitch McConnell ran to Megyn Kelly for comfort.
Harry Reid is smacking around the lying Obamacare liars, and someone seems a bit upset by it. Reid went to the Senate floor to put a statement on the record about all of the lies being bandied about by the likes of Americans for Prosperity.

Speaking about the recent deluge of whining, lying ads, Reid said "Despite all that good news, there's plenty of horror stories being told," He continued, "All of them are untrue, but they're being told all over America."

It's probably a bad idea to make a statement claiming "all" of anything is false, because I'm certain there are a few stories out there that are true. Take, for example, all of those people in red states who have been denied health care access because their governors and legislatures won't expand Medicaid. That is definitely a horror story, one that can't be told often enough.

At any rate, Reid's statement lathered up Senator McConnell, who ran straight to Fox News for comfort from Megyn, who welcomed him with open arms.

Let's just dispense with Megyn's listing of the one hundred horror stories that turned into "thousands" a couple of lines later. In each and every case but one, what she describes is the result of insurer or provider decisions.

Doctors not in the network? That's because the insurers didn't settle their contract with them, or because they opted out of insurance reimbursements from that company.

Medication not covered? That's an insurer decision, and one they made all the time before the Affordable Care Act was fully implemented. Nothing has changed but the blame vessel.

Surgery delayed? Hospital out of network? Yep, that's an issue between the carrier and the provider, and happened all the time before the Affordable Care Act took effect.

As President Obama said, every single health policy decision made by providers and insurers might have been made anyway, but instead it's laid at the feet of the Affordable Care Act. Except needy Medicaid recipients. That's entirely the fault of selfish, lying Republican Koch-heads who want desperately to see more people die faster.

Since we're on the topic Fox News and their nonstop "I hate Obamacare" campaign, let me just take a moment to observe how incredibly arrogant their "how dare you" pronouncements sound.
This is a new chorus among the conservative faithful: How dare you (or Obama or the Congress or anyone else) decide what policies are junk? Or as it was put to me personally by American Commitment's Phil Kerpen and one of his Twitter minions, who accused me of lying about the liar Julie Boonstra in the lastest AfP ad:

My reply is there, too. Yes, I really do care about people not dying because they can handle the bills and have a magic ticket to walk in the doctor's door called an insurance card.

There is no question that coverage with no annual or lifetime caps where the premium cost plus deductible up to maximum out-of-pocket costs for $2 per year is hardly a nightmare, and it's definitely not some kind of disaster. She could have chosen to explore her options on the exchange and didn't. As far I'm concerned, that puts the lie to the entire ad.

We just paid our third premium for insurance and we actually look forward to paying it every month. The burden we once carried is off our shoulders. The real beneficiary is our son, who pays for the top-of-the-line exchange policy without subsidies. It covers the medications we were paying for out-of-pocket since 2010. Instead of $800 per month for medications not covered by the $1200 per month insurance we had, he is now paying $337 for his own insurance policy and $30 per month for his medications.

Which one of those scenarios was the nightmare? The insurance we could have kept because we liked it?(We didn't.) Or the insurance he now can obtain on his own without assistance and without discrimination?

I think the answer is clear.

Republicans’ Worst Nightmare Comes True: Support For Repealing Obamacare Hits All Time Low

A new Kaiser Family Foundation health tracking poll dealt a blow to Republicans by finding that support for repealing the ACA has hit an all time of low of 31%.

There is bad news all over the place for Republicans in the poll,“When it comes to next steps on the law, a majority say it should be kept in place, including 48 percent who want Congress to work to improve it and 8 percent who say it should be kept as is. Fewer say Congress should repeal the law and replace it with a Republican-sponsored alternative (12 percent) or repeal it and not replace it (19 percent).”

To put it another way, the only issue that the Republicans thought they had in their favor in 2014 has turned against them. The GOP has it all wrong. The majority doesn’t think that Obamacare is a job killing monstrosity that must be killed today. Most people want the law to stay in place, but they also want political leaders to improve it.

While 48% of respondents want the law to be worked on and improved, only 12% support the Republicans’ big idea that they can replace Obamacare with their own alternative. The American people have taken a contradictory view of the ACA. By a margin of 47% to 35%, the law itself remains unpopular, but a majority (56%) don’t want the law repealed or replaced.

It is very possible that a majority may never warmly embrace the ACA, but they also understand the need for healthcare reform, so they don’t want the law to go away either. It is a complicated position, and Republicans have set themselves up for total failure by embracing such a black and white approach to the ACA.

The good news for Democrats is that candidates who run on improving the ACA are likely to get a warm reception from voters. Since Republicans refuse to do anything that would keep the existing law in place, Democrats have an uncontested playing field when it comes to improving the law.

A majority wants this country to move forward on healthcare reform, but they understand that Obamacare is not the perfect finished policy product.

This adds up to a win for President Obama and the Democrats.
The Republican Party’s worst nightmare has always been that Obamacare would grow in popularity over time. The ACA isn’t getting more popular, but the actual healthcare reform law is growing in support. This is disastrous news for Republicans who have based the entire election strategy for 2014 and 2016 on getting rid of Obamacare.

The American people are speaking, and they want their affordable healthcare to be here to stay.

It’s Official: Obamacare Enrollment Numbers Top 4 Million!
From the Huffington Post:

The new enrollment number does not include the millions of individuals who have signed up for Medicaid, though it’s not known how many of those individuals renewed their prior coverage or how many are new Medicaid recipients.

The news seems likely to get better for supporters of the law in the next month as well. With a looming enrollment deadline, the administration anticipates a rapid increase in people signing up for coverage. They also expect the number of young enrollees to rise rapidly. That was what happened when the state of Massachusetts implemented similar reform in 2007.

Republicans Busted for Trying to Use Fake IRS Scandal To Protect the Koch Brothers

Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI) busted Republicans on Wednesday for trying to delay implementing new regulations concerning 501(c)(4) organizations.

Pointing out that the (c)(4) designation protects secrecy, Levin said,“That is exactly the secrecy that the Republicans are trying to preserve. Why? Because the three largest spenders representing fully 51% of the total are a who’s who list of Republican political operatives. Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS spent $71 million. Americans for Prosperity, the Koch brothers, spent $36 million. The American Future Fund, also the Koch brothers, spent $25 million.”

Naturally Republicans, who wasted 14 million dollars and counting on ginning up this fake IRS scandal, want to make sure that actual political activities are not taken into account when determining if a group can qualify for tax exemption.

Watch here:

Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sandy Levin exploded on the floor as Republicans tried to delay implementing the regulations that were recommended after they brought attention to the IRS for alleged (and fictional) targeting of conservatives.

First he called out the fact that there is absolutely no evidence of Republican claims that the White House had created an enemies list and was corrupt.

Levin tartly brought up the $14 million in taxpayer funds that Republicans had already thrown away trying to create a fake scandal for political reasons, and pointed out that after all of that money, we learned that absolutely nothing sinister was going on.

But Republicans were so concerned! SO CONCERNED that they spent $14 million dollars to investigate the IRS and yet they don’t want to implement the changes suggested to the IRS. Changes that Levin pointed out were designed to “bring certainty in determining whether an organization’s primary activities are political.”

Ah, yes. Now we are the heart of it. Levin recounted the way Republicans stomped their feet and insisted – while cameras were rolling – that these regulations be acted upon.

Then Levin got all truth buster on the GOP and brought up the explosion of dark money groups after the Citizens United ruling,“Why is this important? Because applications for 501(c)(4) status have nearly doubled between 2010 and 2012 to 3,357, and 501(c)(4) spending has skyrocketed. In 2006 $1 million was spent by 501(c)(4) organizations. In 2010,$92 million was spent. And in 2012,$256 million was spent by 501(c)(4) organizations.”

Levin pointed out that this designation allows the organizations to keep their donors secret. And that this secrecy is actually what Republicans are trying to protect,“That is exactly the secrecy that the Republicans are trying to preserve.

Levin didn’t shy away from the truth,“If you live in a targeted state and you turn on your television, you have probably seen these groups that work at distorting the Affordable Care Act. That is why we are here today purely and simply. Not because Republicans want to stand up for the rights of social welfare organizations, and they often talk about small ones, but to preserve the secrecy around the Republicans’ big campaign efforts.”

The Aging Interstate Highway System: Our Biggest Funding Challenge
April 12, 2013
Few would disagree that America’s interstate highway system was one of
the most important transportation investments in U.S. history. This massive 47,000-mile network of freeways was conceived as a means of connecting the major cities and transportation hubs across America.
...
The interstate system has been critical to mobility in America. While it represents less than 2 percent of all miles of U.S. roadway, it carries more than 25 percent of all vehicle miles of travel. Most of it is more than 50 years old, and it accounts for more than 30 percent of all state transportation expenditures for maintenance and expansion.
“They’re Already Paid For”
The U.S. government largely paid for the system’s original construction, but owns virtually none if it today. States are generally left “holding the bag” to pay for the next 50 years of this vital system. What is worse, government expenditures today average less than 45 percent, and the Highway Trust Fund has run dry at least three times in the last 4 years. Recently, there has been increasing discussion about adding tolls for a new source of funding, but the biggest Congressional argument against that is,“the roads are already paid for.” Let’s take a closer look at that argument.
...
The Next 50 Years
If nothing else, the bridge collapse and huge ongoing expenditures for rebuilding I-95 in Connecticut clearly demonstrate that the system
“is not already paid for.”
And Connecticut is not unique. In fact, according to the Federal Highway Administration, the 50 states collectively spend more than $25 billion per year on interstate maintenance, reconstruction and expansion.
This means they spend more every 5 years than the government’s entire initial $119 billion investment in building the original system.

And now, after all of the public drama, we get to the entire point of the Republican fable about the IRS, which we explained to you as it was going on. Yes, this is all about protecting dark money. It always has been. Levin demanded,“Why are we standing here and saying to the IRS don’t look at 501(c)(4)s. Don’t look at the possible massive abuse.

Don’t look at what has happened in the last few years where political operatives, under the guise of 501(c)(4), have moved from $1 million in many cases to $256 million as reported to the FEC.”

Why are Republicans trying to force the IRS to look the other way? Because Republicans can’t win elections without dark money spreading lies about Democrats. Republicans can’t afford to run on issues. They have to run on smears, since their policies are determined by the Koch Brothers et al, and thus benefit the top 1% instead of the people.

The Republican intention was to manipulate the IRS with a fake story that got a lot of press and thus would be the narrative that stuck in the public’s mind. The press has moved on and barely managed, if at all, to clarify that there was no scandal other than the fact that Republicans lied and schemed to manufacture this fake scandal for the cameras. The Republicans were pulling a classic Karl Rove — attack and put the IRS on the defense, along with the Obama administration as a whole. This way no one would feel free to actually investigate Karl Rove, the Koch Brothers, etc, because it would look bad.

But it backfired. Sure, the public has been duped, but the Democrats did not bow down per usual. The Democrats are on the war path, and they aren’t going down without a fight.

Bernie Sanders Blasts Republicans For Trying to Torpedo Veterans Bill With Iran Sanctions

Sen. Bernie Sanders blasted Senate Republicans today for trying to betray the nation’s veterans by attempting to kill the veterans bill with a demand for sanctions against Iran.

Video:

Sen. Sanders said,“I think there is widespread support across the country for this bill, and I frankly think there is a lot of support in the Senate for this bill. And what has happened for the same old stupid partisan reasons, Republican leadership says well, we want to attach to this bill Iran sanctions, and they know that this is something that the president doesn’t want. They know it’s something that the Secretary of State doesn’t want at this point. They know that the Democratic leadership doesn’t want it, and it’s a means to torpedo what is such an important piece of legislation for our veterans. I really get very upset.”

Every American, no matter what their politics, should be outraged by this sneaky and underhanded attempt to kill a bill that would improve veterans’ benefits. The bill restores the COLA for military retirees, provide more access to healthcare, expands healthcare services for vets, and provides in state tuition assistance for post-9/11 veterans.

Sen. Sanders was correct. This is more of the same old dumb partisan game playing by Senate Republicans. They should be ashamed of themselves for what they are threatening to do to the nation’s veterans, but many congressional Republicans have no shame.

Mitch McConnell and company also lack the integrity and patriotism that would compel them to do the right thing for those who risked their lives for their country.

These same Republicans voted to send our troops to war, and now they are refusing to do right by our veterans. It is an embarrassing disgrace, but a million demands for sanctions towards Iran can’t hide the yellow streak that is running down Mitch McConnell’s back.

Paula Deen Compares Her Struggles to ‘That Black Football Player’ Michael Sam

Some people just shouldn’t speak in public. Well, at least not without a carefully crafted speech choreographed to avoid making them look like a complete idiot.

And I think it’s pretty clear that Paula Deen is one of those people.
I’m sure most of you reading this are well aware of Ms. Deen’s struggles last summer when it became public that she was somewhat of a racist. Reports of her use of the “n-word” and desire for “slave themed” banquets quickly took down the Southern cooking icon.
Upon this news being made public she was pretty much dumped by any business that had an association with her.

But this is the United States. In this country, we’re often open to giving people a second chance. So it was just a matter of time before Paula Deen resurfaced to try to repair the damage she had done to her name and to her brand.

Well, that time seems to be quickly approaching as she’s been offered a $75-100 million investment for some kind of new cooking venture. This news, of course, puts her back in the public eye for the first time in months.

And she just couldn’t help but make a fool of herself once again.
In an interview with People Magazine that will hit newsstands Friday, Deen ridiculously compared her “struggles” to those of Michael Sam – the NFL prospect who recently came out as being a homosexual. An admission which, if drafted into the NFL (as he’s projected to be) would make him the NFL’s first openly gay athlete.

Deen said:
I feel like ‘embattled’ or ‘disgraced’ will always follow my name. It’s like that black football player who recently came out. He said,‘I just want to be known as a football player. I don’t want to be known as a gay football player.’ I know exactly what he’s saying.”

So she’s saying her choice to be a racist is the same as Michael Sam being born a homosexual? And wait, did she just compare being a racist to being a homosexual?

And what does him being black have to do with anything? She could have easily just said,“Like that football player who recently came out.” What does the fact that he’s black have to do with anything?

If you’re trying to repair your image as a racist by pointing out the fact that someone is black, when it has absolutely nothing to do with what you’re talking about, you’re gonna have a bad time.

Then the fact that she’s trying to compare her “struggles” that were completely caused by her own ignorance to that of someone who’s a proud gay man. Michael Sam didn’t choose to be gay, but Paula Deen chose to be racist.

The reason why people will label her has a racist is because that was her choice. That’s why, to many, she’ll forever carry around that label. Michael Sam shouldn’t have to “carry around” the fact that he’s gay because other people can’t accept him for who he is. Being gay isn’t the same as being a racist. Being gay doesn’t change who someone is.

That’s why Michael Sam doesn’t want to be known as the “gay football player”– because something that wasn’t of his choosing has nothing to do with who he is on the football field.

But when someone chooses to be a racist, that does tell a lot about a person’s character.

The fact that this woman would actually compare her situation to that of Michael Sam, the “black football player,” just goes to show how little Paula Deen actually gets it – and sadly she probably never will.

HAHA, She just don't get it. Open fat mouth and insert racist foot again. Typical repuke behavior.

My encounter with a batshit right-wing nut at the bar this evening
I'm traveling to Myrtle Beach for a few days for business. There's a small craft beer/food joint that I like to frequent while in town. It is usually fairly quiet, nice local folks drinking solid beer and eating great wings.
Tonight there was what seemed to be a friendly 50 something couple sitting behind me. The place was fairly quiet so at some point we struck up a light-hearted conversation. They asked what I do for a living and we talked about that for awhile. Then some other light-hearted stuff came up. No big deal.
I somehow mentioned that my previous career was in research as I have a degree in statistics. The guy looked at me and said something like "Well we all know statistics lie." I asked, "What are you talking about???" He said, "Well you know statistics lie. Just look at the polls that come out all the time." So I explained that statistics is just math. Period. It doesn't have anything specifically to do with polling, politics, agendas, etc. It's just math. There are thousands of people who study stats that never do anything with polling. However, I told him I used to do statistical analysis for a living including specialized audience polling and measurement.
He then started saying that "You know, some polls are designed to steer the message or result." I told him that maybe in politics there is some polling done that might try to steer a message, but that the vast majority of statistical polling is simply done to learn more about certain areas for companies or groups to make better decisions. The guy got kind of mad and said loudly "YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!! Politicians use polls to steer voters. And liberals do it all the time!! They make up numbers and call them polls." I told him that I'm sure some politicians might highlight certain aspects of polls in the media to create a message. THEY ALL DO IT!" Of course he said...no way. The Demo-rats (yes he said Demo-rats) do it all the time. Conservatives do not. I started laughing and said "Are you insane? Every politician spins polls and information to their own benefit. THEY ARE POLITICIANS!! That's what they do."
I had an AH-HA moment. I had a quick decision to make. Do a serious verbal complete throw-down on this miserable fuckwad or take the high road and let this guy metaphorically hang himself. I decided a good metaphor lynching was in play. I simply said "I have no idea what you are talking about...my degree in statistics has nothing to do with politics...why are we discussing this?" He started ranting about MSNBC and Rachal Maddow...the communist. I told him that I didn't care who Rachael Maddow is (to deflect the argument) but I have seen that pretty much every cable news network is for quick ratings and entertainment. They will say whatever they need to say to make ratings to sell ads. I specifically mentioned Fox news when I said this. He was starting to foam at the mouth and his wife said "Bob, that's enough. You're acting like an ass again." I started cracking up. He was PISSED. I then said..."I don't waste my time watching cable news crap...I prefer to be a good American dad and read books, play with my kids in the evening, and spend time with my wife". This guy hollered "How do you learn about what the hell is going on in our country?" I told him I trust the President to make those decisions. I thought his head would explode. At that time his wife said "WE NEED to LEAVE BOB." I smiled, shook his hand, and said "It's been a pleasure. Maybe next time we can discuss sports or something more interesting. He pivoted and hauled ass out the front door.
Blah
dumass, the whole country is getting PISSED that morons like you will TRUST just anyone. WTF, you trusted a liar twice!
