The First Barbary War
When Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated in March of 1801, he inherited troubled relations with the Barbary states the Ottoman Regencies of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli, along with independent Morocco. The United States had treaties with all four, but tension was high and rising.
American representatives in the region wanted an American naval presence. They regularly, if less eloquently, echoed the 1793 view of their colleague in Lisbon:When we can appear in the Ports of the various Powers, or on the Coast, of Barbary, with Ships of such force as to convince those nations that We are able to protect our trade, and to compel them if necessary to keep faith with Us, then, and not before, We may probably secure a large share of the Meditn trade, which would largely and speedily compensate the U. S. for the Cost of a maritime force amply sufficient to keep all those Pirates in Awe, and also make it their interest to keep faith. The new president was fully aware of the situation. In 1790, as Secretary of State, he had reported to Congress on the subject in some detail, and he had been directly involved in the region even earlier.

But What If Obama Wants a Default?
[[[["You never want a serious crisis go to waste." --White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, February 9, 2009]]]
I've heard no commentator ask the following question: What if President Obama wants a default?
This is, after all, a man whose starting negotiating position is that he "will not negotiate" with Congress on spending to raise the debt ceiling. This is a position unprecedented in American history since only Congress is granted the "power of the purse".
This is a man willing to use the instrumentalities of government to punish innocent Americans.
This is a man willing to torture World War II veterans,[AND VN Vets] many of whom are terminally ill and trying to see their memorial for the first and last time.
This is a man spreading panic and fear[talk about C~H~I~C~K~E~N little] about the debt ceiling, an utterly irresponsible, reprehensible and unprecedented step by a president.
Here are the facts:
There is virtually no chance of a default, unless Obama orders a default
In fact, Dean Clancy has done an exceptional job dissecting Obama's fear-mongering over the debt ceiling.
There is virtually no chance of a default, unless Obama orders a default.
...Mr. Obama is misleading the public by suggesting the question is whether to pay our bills. Of course we will pay our bills. No one is saying we shouldn't. The question is whether to raise the debt ceiling without also putting in place reforms to make future borrowing less necessary. Mr. Obama's resistance to such reforms makes him, not fiscal conservatives, the one holding the absurd position...

UH, WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED UP, BUT WE THINK IT' S A SUCCESS
At last, the Obamacare circus makes an appearance at a fitting venue: Comedy Central.
From The Hill:
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Monday night that she did not know how many people have signed up for President Obamas healthcare law since its insurance exchanges went live last week.
How many have signed up thus far? host Jon Stewart asked on Comedy Centrals The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Fully enrolled, I cant tell you. I dont know, Sebelius said.Weve been taking applications on the Web, on the phone, but I can tell you not only lots of Web hits, hundreds of thousands of accounts created.
Rhetorical question: If you ran a policy push for a private firm and went into a meeting and claimed to know how many accounts were created but not how many of those went through the full enrollment process, how quickly would your fired self be offered a job in the Obama administration?
Yesterday, the HHS blog posted three Obamacare success stories. Read carefully and youll see that none of the three have even enrolled yet. Maybe its wise of the administration to recognize that if the three do intend to enroll, their best days will have been behind them, so its best to consider them success stories now.
Jay Carney took a similar approach, citing precise website traffic numbers but no enrollment figures. He knows three Hilary Rosens but cant name one Obamacare enrollee?

The World Watches As The American Democracy Breathes Its Last
The people of the world watch in awe and amazement at what is happening in and to America; they are watching as the self-proclaimed greatest democracy in the history of the world is imploding right before their eyes. They see a country that has lost its vision and its stability, weighed down by a government that is no longer capable of governing.
Yes, this is the same America that never tires of making it known to the world that it is the greatest democracy in history, one with a government that has been working tirelessly to spread it across this planet whether other nations want it or not -- often by the use of aggressive military force. The demise of this "model of democracy" must be a truly shocking turn of events but for many nations who are tired of the hubris and bullying it would seem to be a very welcome example of poetic justice.
If America has, in fact, lost its democracy then what will replace it? That question has already been answered. The fact is that this nation has already evolved into a full-fledged corporatocracy, an economic and political system controlled by corporations or corporate interests. The masters of Corporatism have used their unlimited and unrestrained money and power to take command of the government. In military terms, it might be called a bloodless coup.
ARE WE A DEMOCRACY OR A REPUBLIC?
Is the United States a democracy or a republic? Unfortunately, the answer is politically and definitively confusing. Our form of government is both a democracy and a republic. Fortunately, the debate is beginning all over again and it was started by ordinary people who feel that our government is out of control.
WE are KNOWN as a *Constitutional REPUBLIC*!!!

for which it stands,
with liberty and justice for all."

MORE OBAMACARE FABLES
Is there a health insurance horror story disseminated by the White House and its allies that ever turned out to be true? Obamacare advocates have exercised more artistic license than a convention of Photoshoppers. Now, a prominent sob story shilled by President Obama himself about his own mother is in doubt. Its high past time to call their bluffs.
The presidents Dunham sham-ecdote is just the latest entry in an ever-expanding catalogue of Obamacare fables:
Otto Raddatz. In 2009, Obama publicized the plight of this Illinois cancer patient, who supposedly died after he was dropped from his Fortis/Assurant Health insurance plan when his insurer discovered an unreported gallstone the patient hadnt known about. The truth? He got the treatment he needed in 2005 and lived for nearly four more years.
Robin Beaton. Also in 2009, Obama claimed Beaton a breast cancer patient lost her insurance after she forgot to declare a case of acne. In fact, she failed to disclose a previous heart condition and did not list her weight accurately, but had her insurance restored anyway after intense public lobbying.
John Brodniak. A 23-year-old unemployed Oregon sawmill worker, Brodniaks health woes were spotlighted by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof as a textbook argument for Obamacare. Brodniak was reportedly diagnosed with cavernous hemangioma, a neurological condition, and was allegedly turned away by emergency room doctors. Kristof called the case monstrous and decried opponents of Democrats health care proposals as heartless murderers. The truth? Brodniak not only had coverage through Oregons Medicaid program, but was also a neurology patient at the prestigious Oregon Health and Science University in Portland (a safety-net institution that accepts all Medicaid patients). Kristof never retracted the legend.
Marcelas Owens. An 11-year-old boy from Seattle, Owens took a coveted spot next to the president in March 2010 when Obamacare was signed into law. Owens 27-year-old mother, Tiffany, died of pulmonary hypertension. The family said the single mother of three lost her job as a fast-food manager and lost her insurance. She died in 2007 after receiving emergency care and treatment throughout her illness. Progressive groups (for whom Marcelas relatives worked) dubbed Marcelas an insurance abuse survivor. But there wasnt a shred of evidence that any insurer had abused the boy or his mom. Further, Washington State already offered a plethora of existing government assistance programs to laid-off and unemployed workers like Marcelas mom. The family and its p.r. agents never explained why she didnt enroll.
Natoma Canfield. The White House made the Ohio cancer patient a poster child for Obamacare in 2010 after she wrote a letter complaining about skyrocketing premiums and the prospect of losing her home. After Obama gave Canfield a shout-out at a health care rally in Strongsville, Ohio, and promised to control costs, officials at the renowned Cleveland Clinic, which is treating her, made clear that they would not put a lien on her home and that she was eligible for a wide variety of state aid and private charity care.
Since Obamacare passed, the amount workers pay in health care premiums has soared an average of nearly 14 percent; thousands of businesses have sought waivers in search of relief from the laws onerous mandates; medical device makers have slashed jobs and research; and the private individual health insurance market is in critical condition.
Post-Obamacare truth is bloodier than pro-Obamacare fiction.

Lest we forget, the word "republic" identifies some of the worst of dictatorships, authoritarian and tyrannical governments. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the People's Republic of China are two glaring examples.[A~M~E~R~I~C~A IS completely DIFFRENT than THOSE! America IS the MOST EXCEPTIONAL *Republic* in the WORLD <3]
And even though the word "democratic" is used by small dictatorships around the globe, "democracy" is nowhere to be found.
Frustration with society and government leaves most people feeling ambivalent or helpless. But we must not forget that the only thing standing between liberty and tyranny is the freedom to participate in democracy. We must use it or run the risk of losing it entirely.

DEMOCRATS VINDICTIVE SHUT DOWN THEATER
I just dont know what theyre trying to accomplish. So says Jim Hagen, South Dakotas secretary of tourism, about the federal governments blocking off not only the entrance to the Mount Rushmore monument but also roadside viewing areas outside the park. They wont even let you pull off on the side of the road, he says, noting that this particular act of shutdown theater is damaging his states tourism economy and ruining the plans of countless travelers. Shutdowns are strangely labor-intensive things: After setting up traffic cones to block off the Mount Rushmore viewing areas, the feds had to pick them up again because of a blizzard, but apparently had plans to put them right back down again after the plowing is done. Perhaps Mr. Hagen has too gentle a cast of mind to appreciate just what the Obama administration is trying to accomplish: It is an act of political theater, a gross and possibly illegal abuse of political power, an assault on private property, and a wanton subjugation of responsible governance to the political interests of President Obama and his party.
Consider the case of Ralph and Joyce Spencer, 77 and 80 years of age, respectively, who were evicted from their home on Lake Mead in Nevada by an officious park ranger who told them they had 24 hours to vacate the premises. The Spencers own their home outright, but it sits on land leased from the federal government. A lease is a legal contract, and the government shutdown presents no legitimate reason for the violation of that contract. Even if it did, the place to settle such a dispute is in a court of law not through the arbitrary exercise of federal police power. This is not a blunder: It is the malicious harassment of private citizens in their own homes by an administration intent on creating hardships and then using them for propaganda purposes. You own your home right up until the moment when that the fact becomes inconvenient to President Obama.
Likewise, monuments that require no federal oversight being, as they are, open to the public have been barricaded by the federal government as part of the shutdown theater. The government has even ordered the closure of state-operated parks that sit on federal land. Anna Eberly, who manages the Claude Moore Colonial Farm in McLean, Va., one such shut-down park, says:In all the years I have worked with the National Park Service, I have never worked with a more arrogant, arbitrary, and vindictive group representing the NPS.Vindictive is the right word: It takes federal action to close the sites and none to keep them open. This is not what an inactive government looks like, but a spiteful one.
Likewise, federal websites have been shut down rather than left alone, with the selection of blacked-out sites being bafflingly arbitrary, in the words of Ars Technica. The Amber Alert site at the Department of Justice was taken offline, but the first ladys Lets Move campaign remained up and running. As with the case of the roped-off monuments, it takes more work and resources to black out websites than it does to simply leave them be. The administration is willing to do a great deal of work for a political stunt, but apparently takes a nonchalant view of the situation of abducted children.
Or veterans. After closing off the World War II Memorial in Washington, the administration partly reversed itself, declaring the site open for First Amendment activities. In the United States, having a thought in ones head or a word in ones mouth is a First Amendment activity. We do not exercise our rights at the sufferance of the federal government; Washington is named after a man who fought for that principle, an irony apparently lost on Barack Obama.

Fox News, Anna Kooiman, Falls For Fake Story
The co-hosts of "Fox and Friends Saturday" lamented the closure of the World War II Memorial, which Kooiman claimed "doesn't seem fair especially" because "President Obama has offered to pay out of his own pocket for the museum of Muslim culture."
The fake report came from National Report, a parody news site.
