Teabagistan: Tea Party Trying To Form New Little Red States Just For Them

Sore loser. Spoil sport. Cry baby. Sour grapes. Butt hurt.(exactly)

Every single one of these is pretty much a spot on description of the Tea Party and conservatism in general. For decades, the right-wing had free run of American policy. We wallowed in our bigotry, selfishness and callousness towards others. We cut taxes for the rich and services for the poor. We passed laws denouncing homosexuals. We started wars in other countries just for fun. Corporations took over our courts and our politicians. We deregulated and privatized everything we could get away with. We venerated the amoral rich and mocked the poor and downtrodden. We took religion and turned it into a crass weapon. We reduced women to objects.

It was the best of times to be a bigoted white male heterosexual Christian in America because even if the majority of people were not on board with their obnoxious attitudes towards The Other, the majority was effectively cowed because they were still the loudest voice and “everyone knew” that was just how America was. But then something wholly predictable happened: Those other minorities kept growing and they grew faster than the bigoted white male heterosexual Christian demographic. Now they’re large enough where they’re not so easily shouted down anymore.

Combine that with the utter failure of right-wing economic policy and the tide is rapidly shifting against the conservative movement.

So how are they taking it? Is the right doing any soul searching? Are they moderating their tone? Have rank and file conservatives realized that perhaps their views on race and sexuality are outdated and unwanted?

Nope! They want to make their own little enclaves of whiteness:

…a 49-year-old information technology consultant wants to apply the knife to Maryland’s five western counties.“The people are the sovereign,” says Scott Strzelczyk, leader of the fledgling Western Maryland Initiative, and the western sovereigns are fed up with Annapolis’s liberal majority, elected by the state’s other sovereigns.

“If you think you have a long list of grievances and it’s been going on for decades, and you can’t get it resolved, ultimately this is what you have to do,” says Strzelczyk, who lives in New Windsor, a historic town of 1,400 people in Carroll County.“Otherwise you are trapped.”

Strzelczyk’s effort is one of several across the country to separate significant portions of states from, as he puts it,“the dominant ruling class.” Nearly a dozen northern Colorado counties are the furthest along, with nonbinding referendums set for November ballots. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is making a move to join with parts of Wisconsin. Northern California counties want to form a state called Jefferson.

So the political movement that has wrapped itself in the American flag so tightly that it’s cut the blood flow off to their brains wants to take their toys and run away because they’re not winning the game anymore. It’s important to note that these are the people that are the “real” Americans in their own mind. They love love LOVE America, democracy and mom’s apple pie. But only as long as most of the pie is theirs and they get to make the rules. Once they have to share and everyone else gets a vote, suddenly, democracy is not fair, not right and they want their country back!

There’s a reason that Ayn Rand’s ode to narcissism, Atlas Shrugged, is so popular with the right wing. The idea of packing up and running away is deeply ingrained in the (White) American psyche.“White flight” is a very real phenomena.

While ethnicities tend to congregate, White people have perfected the practice of fleeing an area when too many minorities move in. Now, they’ve taken it to a whole new level since a black man violated broke into desecrated defiled was elected to the White House. The nonstop talk of succession and the useful idiots known as ”Sovereign Citizens” and, now, making their own states is just a manifestation of White Flight on the national stage.

The problem with this plan of making little ruby red states is that it would only delay the inevitable and, actually, be an ENORMOUS drain on the rest of the country. Red states are, by and large, total failures. The decades of sabotaging education and the social safety net while allowing corporations free reign to poison and exploit the population have left far too many of them in dire straights. True to the hypocrisy of the right, even as they scream about helping others with “handouts” they scream even louder if their own handouts are threatened. Even if we allowed them to form, in a generation or two, these right wing utopias would be the equivalent of third world countries. The rich would live lavish lifestyles and everyone else would be dirt poor.

And they’d still be blaming that ?? Obama.(REMOVED gd word, as I also cringed at that phrase)

Rush Limbaugh Has No Business Teaching History to Our Kids

Gather round while Rush Limbaugh retells American history for young readers. Or not. Michelle Cottle on why you should take your kids and run as fast as you can in the other direction.

Rush Limbaugh is coming for your children. Not in the flesh, thank God. But on his radio show last Thursday, the right’s favorite gasbag announced that, after a two-decade hiatus, he is returning to the publishing world, this time with a history lesson for the grade-school set.

The title of his forthcoming book is Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims: Time Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans. As befitting an author of such extraordinary narcissism, the book’s hero is “a fearless middle-school history teacher named Rush Revere, who travels back in time and experiences American history as it happens,” and the book’s cover features the colonial-themed caricature of Limbaugh that also serves the logo of his patriot-themed brand of iced tea.

The story itself is based on a heart-warming Thanksgiving-themed tale that Rush shares with Dittoheads each holiday season, about how the pilgrims, following that first harvest feast with the Wampanoag, went on to reject communal living. Forget inviting the locals over to give thanks to God for not wiping out the entire colony in its first year; as Rush sees it,“The true story of Thanksgiving is how socialism failed.”

The idea for the book, Rush tells us, came from Mrs. Limbaugh:“My wife Kathryn came up with an idea that literally lit a fire under me.”(Literally lit a fire under him? The first three Mrs. Limbaughs were willing to settle for divorce.)“She said,‘You know you’re always talking about how history is being mistaught. You’re right. You’re always talking about what kids are learning these days, and they’re not learning about the greatness of America. They’re not learning about the founding days. They’re not learning the right things about the great people, the exceptional people in this country.’ She said,‘Why don’t you write a book for kids?’”

Now, I appreciate the time-honored tradition of political eminences feeling moved to share their wit and wisdom with the next generation—and I have read more than my fair share of such works. Among the more notable: Former second-lady Lynne Cheney has produced a number of historical picture books. Bill Bennett turned his Book of Virtues into a veritable kiddie franchise (The Children’s Book of Virtues, The Children’s Book of Heroes, The Children’s Book of America, The Young People’s Book of Virtues…) Bill O’Reilly, meanwhile, aimed for a slightly older demographic with his teen-targeted 2004 best-seller, The O’Reilly Factor for Kids: A Survival Guide for America’s Families.

Rush, however, is a different creature from such predecessors. Say what you will about their politics (and I’ve said plenty), both Cheney and Bennett are serious people.(Neither author, for instance, subjected readers to puffed-up cartoon versions of themselves sporting a tricorn hat.) Even O’Reilly, with all his bombast and hysteria, has an earnest streak that occasionally bubbles up, and his self-helpy offering for adolescents steered clear of political bloviating.

Rush, by contrast, has never shown any signs of being a serious or thoughtful or earnest guy. He is a degenerate rodeo clown—a toxic provocateur who, while undeniably entertaining for like-minded adults, should be kept as far away from kids as possible. Am I concerned that he’s going to start raving about “sluts” or “feminazis” or slip the lyrics to “Barack the Magic Negro” into his kiddie lit? Of course not. But the guy is a proudly offensive adult showman. Having him pen books for kids is a little bit like having Howard Stern come in to lead your preschooler’s circle time. It just shouldn’t happen.

I am hoping to be surprised. Often, political types court kids as a way to soften their image.(Or their husbands’: Think of all those adorable pet books to come out of the White House over the years.) And there is always the chance that Rush will keep his baser demagoguery in check—or at least tone down the anti-socialist raving that is central to the oft-repeated story on which this book is based. That said, I’m not holding my breath. And, no matter how diluted the story’s ideological rhetoric, it’s already clear that it will be, at its core, a crass and pompous mixture of self-marketing and self-mythologization.(“Rush Revere”? The man should be reading children’s books, not writing them.)

The release date for Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims is set for October 29, two days before Halloween, which seems entirely appropriate. After all, it’s tough to think of a cultural development more frightening than one of conservatism’s most age-inappropriate personalities peddling his ideas specifically to young kids.

Except maybe for Rush’s on-air musing that, if the book sells well, he plans to expand it into a series.

Where are all the ObaMORONS at tonight? Waiting for Putin to send a video to America telling Obama what, when, where, why and how high to jump when he yells at him? lol

Oh sure Syria is going to give up their chemical weapons. I mean, lets get real, it was just days ago that they were shooting at the UN inspectors who were there to investigate the chemical weapons locations and Assad has only used chemical weapons on his people just a couple of times. Yep, sure sounds like somebody is terrified of Obama's red line so much so that they only crossed it a couple of times. Now Putin has Obama backed into a corner and Putin will make the decision as to America striking Syria now or ever.

Great speech, I am grateful they didn't make us listen to GRANDrand's bullshit campaigning for 2016.

Mitch McConnell: Odd man out on Syria
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday came out against military action against the Syrian government, a decision that puts him at odds with the three other party leaders in the House and Senate.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) have each expressed support for President Obama’s call for a military attack in response to the Syrian’s government’s alleged use of chemical weapons.
But not McConnell. In a speech you can watch in its entirety below, the Senate Republican leader explained his opposition on the Senate floor.

Here’s the line that sums up his position:”I will be voting against this resolution. A vital national security risk is clearly not at play, there are just too many unanswered questions about our long-term strategy in Syria, including the fact that this proposal is utterly detached from a wider strategy to end the civil war there, and on the specific question of deterring the use of chemical weapons, the president’s proposal appears to be based on a contradiction. Either we will strike targets that threaten the stability of the regime — something the president says he does not intend to do — or we will execute a strike so narrow as to be a mere demonstration.”

In making his case, McConnell tied together the president’s broader record on foreign policy and the specifics of the situation in Syria as the basis of his reasoning.

Left unmentioned: politics. There is no reason to doubt the sincerity of McConnell’s stated policy opposition to military action in Syria. But as we’ve written in this space, it’s impossible to view the mechanics of big debates (like this one) in Washington without also taking the political implications into account.

And for McConnell, the political implications are unique when compared to Pelosi, Reid, and Boehner. In short, he would have had everything to lose and really nothing to gain by supporting a military strike.

As we wrote last week when McConnell was still on the fence even as other leaders agreed to support Obama’s call for force, the Republican faces a primary challenger who opposes military action. Supporting a strike would have stoked tensions in the campaign, and it would have positioned McConnell closer to Obama. Strike one.

What’s more, it would have put him at odds with fellow Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who has been the voice and face of the opposition movement on Capitol Hill.(Paul is even set to speak on Syria after President Obama does Tuesday night).

Paul has endorsed McConnell for reelection, and the Republican leader is counting on that support to boost his standing among the conservative voters who adore the freshman senator but are skeptical of him. Going against Paul on this issue wouldn’t exactly inspire his loyalists to line up behind McConnell. Strike two.

Finally, public opinion about the prospect of an attack has become crystal clear in the last week, with survey after survey showing Americans opposed to a strike. And within the upper chamber, passage is looking ever more uncertain, as three dozen senators are either “no” or leaning “no” right now. Supporting the measure would put McConnell on the wrong side of the debate nationally, and in an shaky part of the smaller universe of the Senate. Strike three.

Of course, going against the grain of the broader public is something Reid, Pelosi, and Boehner will have to come to terms with, too. And for Boehner, who has faced great difficulty corralling votes in his own conference, his stance threatens to further alienate some rank and file Republicans.

But none of the other three leaders are being threatened by primary challengers or are under the electoral microscope the way McConnell is this cycle. Faced with a 2014 map with few pick-up opportunities, Senate Democrats have made McConnell their top GOP target, recruiting secretary of state Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) to challenge him. Pelosi and Boehner aren’t at any risk of losing their seats next year, and Reid doesn’t face reelection until 2016.

The political implications for McConnell are much more personal and more immediate.

I'm glad we can rely on Mitch to make a level-headed decision. I don't support Obama's plan/strike on Syria. He announced when and where the strike would be and Kerry confessed that the strike would be unbelievably small. The why bother if you are going to be stupid enough to tell your foe what and when and why and how you will strike. Come up with a real plan that doesn't involve striking Syria just to save face and embarrassment, Obama. Then maybe even your own party might vote with you instead of against you. Mitch gets my vote again. He voted the smart way and the ay the citizens of Ky want him to vote.

The RWNJs Held a Rally and Nobody Showed Up
A group of thousands of "patriots" was planning on taking over Washington, DC yesterday, by force if necessary. According to their Facebook page,
We are NOT going to ask congress to Impeach Obama And HIS Administration,

We ARE going to DEMAND it!

They were planning on using tractor-trailers to block the roads into and out of the city. The trailers would also serve as temporary jail facilities in which to hold members of Congress and other officials who didn't comply with their demands. They were not going to be armed themselves, but planned to have an armed citizen's militia waiting in the wings in Virginia to come and save them if authorities in DC became violent.

Some of the planners envisioned this as a multi-day event.

This was the gathering that was so nuts that even angry wingnut lunatic Police Chief Mark Kessler of Gilberton, PA distanced himself from it.

They had it all planned out. They were pissed and they weren't going to take it anymore.

Here's a shot of the National Mall at 3:48 pm yesterday (courtesy of the birther debunking blog Obama Conspiracy Theories.).

Scattered reports from Twitter and Facebook indicate a couple of dozen people wandered around DC trying to find the rest of the group. All in all, a major FAIL.
