Obama says US taking 'precautions' on terror threats but insists,'We're going to live our lives'

In his first public comments about recent terror threats, President Barack Obama Tuesday night urged Americans to be prudent but insisted, "Terrorists depend on the idea that we're going to be terrorized. We're going to live our lives."

In an appearance on “The Tonight Show,” Obama told host Jay Leno that the threat that closed more than a dozen U.S. embassies in the Mideast this week was significant and a reminder that extremist factions still exist around the globe.

“It's a reminder that for all the progress we've made, getting bin Laden, putting al Qaeda in between Afghanistan and Pakistan back on its heels, that this radical, you know, violent extremism is still out there, and we've got to stay on top of it,” he said.

Asked if the message was for Americans to delay travel plans, Obama said no, but Americans should exercise “some common sense and some caution,” and he encouraged people to check with the State Department or embassies before trips to any potentially dangerous areas.

Obama praised American resilience after tragedies like the Boston bombings, saying it is important not to let terrorists “shut us down” over fears of violence.

The appearance on the lighthearted NBC show, Obama's sixth, was the first time the president spoke publicly about the potential plot since the threat of a terror attack prompted the State Department to shutter more than a dozen U.S.
embassies and consulates across the Middle East for the remainder of the week. That action sprung from intercepted messages between top al Qaeda leaders who appeared to be plotting a major attack in or around Yemen. Almost 100 U.S. personnel were evacuated from the country early Tuesday.

Addressing concerns about an NSA information collection program that stores phone record metadata in the effort to prevent terrorist attacks, Obama acknowledged that some are skeptical of the program’s impact on privacy but defended some government surveillance as a "critical component to counterterrorism.”

“We don’t have a domestic spying program,” Obama said.“What we do have are some mechanisms that can track a phone number or an email address that is connected to a terrorist attack,” he said.“That information is useful."

The president also addressed the ongoing diplomatic fracas with Russia, which offered temporary asylum to alleged NSA leaker Edward Snowden and has cracked down with policies targeting gays and lesbians as the 2014 Sochi Olympics approach.

He confirmed that he will attend the G-20 summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin but warned that his forward-looking message will be clear.
President Obama talks about the controversial Trayvon Martin case and race on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno".

"There are times when they slip back into Cold War thinking and Cold War mentality,” he said of the Russian government.“What I continually say to them and to President Putin, that’s the past."
Domestic issues also came up – including Obama’s emotional impromptu speech in the wake of the verdict in the Trayvon Martin case.

He described his remarks then as an effort to aspire to “fairness” in the justice system while acknowledging the realities that face young African American men.

"What we also believe in is that people - everybody - should be treated fairly and the system should work for everyone," he said to applause.

Not all of the conversation revolved around the most weighty issues faced by the commander-in-chief: Obama joked about his love of broccoli and his recent birthday, and he quipped that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had “that post-administration glow” when they lunched privately last month.

Asked if his onetime presidential rival was “measuring the drapes” during the visit, Obama reminded Leno that Clinton knows her way around the White House from her tenure as first lady.
"Keep in mind she's been there,” he said.“She doesn't have to measure them."

President Obama jokes about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's "post-administration glow" during an interview on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno".

I don't appreciate your reference Black Hole Sun reference in whatever you intended it to be in your warped pea brain. The filth speculated about those words deems your reference to it offensive. Yet you say you didn't post a wrestler porn site. The rest of us know better. In my eyes
Indisposed
In disguise
As no one knows
Hides the face
Lies the snake
The sun
In my disgrace
Boiling heat
Summer stench
’neath the black
The sky looks dead
Call my name
Through the cream
And I’ll hear you
Scream...

The government cannot continue to have people like you living off tax payers so hopefully your grand-kids can do it Repub style and be on their own.
This is the last conversation I plan to have with you regarding my retirement.

What I actually said in my previous post was "My concern is for my children and grandchildren and all other children of this nation. I want them to have the same opportunities we had."

As I have told you before, I paid into my retirement. It came out of each and every one of my pay checks for over 30 years. My employer paid an additional percentage into my retirement account. I also receive health care which is paid by my employer but it is not a government health care. It is Humana and I hope it doesn't change with Obamacare. My husband retired from a private employer who does the same for him and we also made some good investments.

Now if you have a problem with that, maybe you need to contact the millions and millions of retirees nationwide who retired from government employment. You could actually start with Republicon who evidently retired from a government job and enjoys bragging about it.

I am not the least bit ashamed I had a government career and receive the benefits I EARNED as millions of others do. I worked for a living and NEVER received food stamps, welfare, medicaid, disability, etc. I paid taxes throughout my entire career and still do so get over it.

Since they suckle the U.S. Giverment breast, they have no concept of self reliance; they think everyone else does as they do. Sad to say, the tides have shifted and now there is more going out than coming in...they are draining the once (upon a time) vast sea of resources dry! Republicans have attempted to repair the holes in our sinking economy, and Democrats run around drilling new holes faster than we can repair them. Soon all will be left high and dry...it's ironic that we are also drowning in in national debt.

Obama was twice elected; once by a wave of optimism, and then ~by a tidal wave~ of fraud and corruption!

I agree and it is sickening. I really attempt to discuss issues with an open mind and the belief that everyone has the right to their opinions, but it is becoming more difficult each day. The outright vicious and vile comments made by some of these posters is unbelievable.
