Mitch McConnell's Wife Slams Progress Kentucky in First TV Ad
In the first TV ad of the 2014 Kentucky Senate race, Republican Mitch McConnell's wife jabs a liberal super PAC for attacking her ethnicity.
As WFPL reported last month, Progress Kentucky sent out a number of messages via Twitter attacking former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, with a focus on her race.
The national backlash forced the group to eventually apologize, and in the 30-second spot Chao says that represents the overall tone of the campaign.
"You've seen the ads attacking my husband. As Mitch McConnell's wife, I have come to expect them," Chao says in the ad. "Now, far left special interests are also attacking my ethnicity, even attacking Mitch's patriotism because he's married to me. That's how low some people will stoop."
Using President Obama as a backdrop, Chao also says McConnell's leadership has helped protect Kentucky from "bad ideas" in Washington. It is unclear what specific legislation or measure the ad is referring to, but given the president's unpopularity in the state it may not matter.
Observers argue that Team Mitch putting out an ad a year and a half before Election Day represents weakness, but the McConnell campaign believes the incumbent is being besieged by negative attacks from the left and must respond.
"Mitch McConnell is such a tremendous champion for Kentucky, and goes to bat for the Commonwealth every day," says McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton. "Liberal special interest group across country are sure to try every dirty trick in the book to tear him down, but our campaign will fight as hard as Mitch fights for us and make sure we spread his positive message to every voter in the State."
UPDATE:
In response to the ad, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee says McConnell is the most vulnerable and least popular incumbent in the country.
"Mitch McConnell is known as the meanest, most negative campaigner in all of Washington, and Kentuckians and all Americans are sick and tired of his nasty, partisan brand of politics," says DSCC spokesman Matt Canter. "No wonder he is the least popular incumbent senator in the entire country. We strongly disagree with the tweet that Mitch McConnell is referencing in his new ad, but let's be honest: Mitch McConnell is not a victim.
In fact, he is the reason for Washington's dysfunction."
http://www.wfpl.org/post/mitch-mcconnells-wif...
In a Feb. 14 Twitter message, Progress says: "This woman has the ear of (Sen. McConnell)—she's his wife. May explain why your job moved to China!"
No truer words than that UPDATE above.

Why are "red states" the federal "welfare states"??
You can ask your mommy a lot of questions, including big questions like this one.

Mommy probably knows the answer to this one, or at least part of the answer….

Probably you do too….

For example, Mississippi is one of the states that sucks up far more federal spending per capita than it pays in federal taxes – and that's big time, Mississippians get almost $3 worth of federal spending and benefits for every dollar they pay in personal and corporate federal taxes. Only two states (New Mexico and Alaska) get more.

De facto, in the simplest terms of pocketbook politics, Mississippians actually love the federal government. In this simplistic view, they should be loving President Obama down in Mississippi.

I wonder why 90% of white voters in Mississippi went for the other guy last November?

Republicans Eating Their Own: Angry tea party activists tell donors to shun “inept” Karl Rove

Back in January I wrote about the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad GOP dissension-slash-implosion. Unfortunately for them, things have only gone downhill from there. Karl Rove has failed in the advice department recently, like when he told the GOP, essentially, just don’t *sound* intolerant, just pretend to be inclusive and nobody will be the wiser.

Wrongy McWrongerson strikes again.

Then Bush’s Brain decided to push for more “electable”(read: not totally and utterly extreme times infinity) candidates who he thought could win Republican primaries. Guess who didn’t like that. Hint: It rhymes with Schmea Schmarty and schmonservatives.

So a few of them wrote a letter. They wrote a letter that went to people with a lot of money. People with a lot of money who donate to Republican candidates and causes. And they did that because they don’t like feeling betrayed by one of their own.

Dems run from Progress Kentucky as group appears to implode in another McConnell attack

Progress Kentucky is a super PAC that is acting more like a rogue operation in its efforts to unseat Kentucky Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell -- sending out racially sensitive tweets and allegedly making a secret recording of the Senate minority leader’s re-election strategy talks.

The group has been around only since December, raising about $1,000 and spending $18, compared to the McConnell campaign that has raised $10 million toward 2014 re-election efforts, according to recent Federal Election Commission filings.

In addition, we have put a review process in place to ensure tweets and other social media communications from Progress KY are reviewed and approved prior to posting," said Progress Kentucky Executive Director Shawn Reilly in an email issued late Tuesday night.

It drew the ire of both the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) and its Democratic counterpart, with NRSC Communications Director Brad Dayspring calling the tweet "disgusting" and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee national Press Secretary Justin Barasky calling the comments "completely out of line."

You are very naive if you believe Mitch McConnell's wife has that much control. Why do US companies go over seas?
----------

For many companies, overseas locations offer labor forces willing to work for lower wages than American workers. This factor has led to many manufacturing companies closing their U.S. factories and relocating their operations to Latin America, Asia and other locations.

American firms move jobs overseas for reasons other than the lower labor costs in other countries. In the past decade, many information technology firms began offshoring jobs in this sector, attracted by the better-educated work force in places such as India and China. U.S. education system trails other nations in producing college graduates with the scientific and mathematical knowledge needed for success in the modern information-based economy.

A 2005 article from the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., suggested that the U.S. tax code may actually encourage companies to move American jobs overseas. Authors Lael Brainard and Robert E. Litan pointed to a provision that allows companies to defer taxes on foreign earnings as a possible incentive for businesses to move operations and jobs out of the United States.

Mitch McConnell's wife is Elaine Chao, she is the daughter of James Chao, the founder of Foremost shipping company. Foremost shipping carries goods between the US and China, the majority of all imports are by sea and Foremost shipping is a multi-billion dollar company.

James Chao has close ties with some of the most powerful people in China, both in business and politics. He went to school and was friends with Jaing Zemin the future leader of the Peoples Republic of China.

James Chao got his start in the shipping business with the Tung family of Shanghai, powerful in both business and politics. Tung Chee Hwa was the first chief executive of Hong Kong after its reunification with mainland China.

James Chao's wife is from the Hsus family of Hong Kong and are also a powerful family in shipping and politics.

How Mitch McConnell became very rich

It seems, from opensecrets.org 's review of his financial disclosure forms, that McConnell's wealth has jumped substantially in the last few years.

Back in 2005, McConnell's net worth was somewhere between $1,645,032 and $4,278,999, ranking him the 38th richest Senator.

After four years when the stock market has flatlined, McConnell now has a net worth between $7,102,036 and $32,756,000, and he's now the 12th wealthiest Senator.

Pretty good, for a guy who has evidently NEVER had a private sector job.

Obviously, the wide range of McConnell's estimated wealth is due to the way the disclosure forms allow a pretty wide range on reports of assets.
His top asset is his holdings in the Vanguard Tax Exempt Money Market, estimated at between $5,001,002 and $25,015,000. His next most valuable asset is his D.C. home (and carriage house rental) which is reported as worth between $1M and $5M.
The rest are investments in a wide variety of stock and bond mutual funds.

Let's look at his Vanguard investments.
Back in 2006, his major Vanguard investment was in its 500 Index Fund, estimated at between $650,003 and $1,350,000.

The next year, McConnell's wealth in that fund jumped to an estimated $1,100,002 to $5,250,000. Then in 2008 (not a good year in the market), McConnell's wealth in that fund dropped a bit (estimated from $500K to $1M), but all of a sudden he had $5,001,002 to $25,015,000 in the Vanguard Tax Exempt Money Market.

The year before, he had a pittance ($1K to $15K) in that fund.

Somehow, some way, McConnell got much richer in 2008, getting at least $5M from somebody.
That somebody was his second wife's father, who made his fortune in shipping Chinese-made goods to the USA.

Elaine Cha
o married McConnell in 1993, and was George W. Bush's anti- Labor Secretary for the full eight years.

According to Laura Flanders, her father, James Chao:

had the luck not only to attend one of his country's finest universities with Jiang Zemin, the future leader of the People's Republic, but also to fall in with the immensely powerful Shanghai-born family the Tungs, who shifted their operations to Taiwan for a time.

The Tung dynasty is powerful in Chinese politics and business to this day. Hong Kong's first chief executive after reunification with mainland China was Tung Chee Hwa, the first child of the magnate Tung Chao Yung, in whose Maritime Trust company James Chao got his start. James Chao married into another powerful family: the Hsus. His wife's family would later operate a shipping empire in Hong Kong.

So Mitch McConnell has moved from the upper-middle class of a lifelong government employee into the real upper class ($20M or so net worth) of someone who married a woman with a rich father.

Who just happened to become rich from his connections with the rulers of communist China.

Villagers would say that this is old news, "free" trade is great for everybody, we like Mitch and Elaine, and want him to return our calls, etc.

So they have not reported on the source of McConnell's mega-wealth (relative to the rest of us), and how that source has presumably, for 20 years or so, affected McConnell's positions on "free" trade and its devastating impact on millions of Americans who used to have decent manufacturing jobs.

McConnell and his wife are cheap-labor Republicans who hate the idea of American factory workers making more than $15 an hour.

Because that's what their benefactors want them to do.
