The Great Betrayal - Obama Budget to Cut Social Security

(Reuters)- President Barack Obama will offer cuts to Social Security and other entitlement programs in a budget proposal aimed at swaying Republicans to compromise on a deficit-reduction deal, a senior administration official said on Friday.

This is a disgrace. I never thought I'd live to see a Democratic President PROPOSE cuts to Social Security. Just disgusting ...

Tell President Obama: No cuts to Social Security or Medicare

Possible agreement on background checks sets stage for Senate vote on gun measure.

By Kasie Hunt, Luke Russert and Kelly O'Donnell

Senate Democrats are setting the stage for a vote on new gun laws later this week as two key senators on Tuesday said they were close to announcing a compromise bill to expand background checks to firearms sales at gun shows and on the Internet.

Sen. Pat Toomey, a conservative Pennsylvania Republican, announced he plans to appear Wednesday with West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, who holds an A rating from the National Rifle Association.

The two have been working on a compromise proposal that could draw Republican support for expanding background checks, and an aide to Toomey said Tuesday night that all but the final details were left to negotiate.

"We're hopeful," Manchin told reporters Tuesday when he was asked if he planned to announce a deal on Wednesday.

"We're closer than we've ever been," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., after he and Manchin emerged from an evening meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Schumer has been acting as an intermediary throughout the gun bill negotiations.

Iraq, Afghanistan Wars Will Cost U.S. 4-6 Trillion Dollars: Report
WASHINGTON, Mar 30 2013 / http://tinyurl.com/btmpjqj
(IPS)- Costs to U.S. taxpayers of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will run between four and six trillion dollars, making them the most expensive conflicts in U.S. history, according to a new report by a prominent Harvard University researcher.
While Washington has already spent close to two trillion dollars in direct costs related to its military campaigns in the two countries, that total “represents only a fraction of the total war costs”, according to the report by former Bill Clinton administration official Linda Bilmes.
“The single largest accrued liability of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is the cost of providing medical care and disability benefits to war veterans,” she wrote in the 21-page report,‘The Financial Legacy of Iraq and Afghanistan: How Wartime Spending Decisions Will Constrain Future National Security Budgets’.

When we look back someday at the catastrophe that was the Bush administration, we will think of many things: the tragedy of the Iraq war, the shame of Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib, the erosion of civil liberties. The damage done to the American economy does not make front-page headlines every day, but the repercussions will be felt beyond the lifetime of anyone reading this page.

----------

World War II was easily the costliest war in American history, gobbling up 45 percent of America's gross national product. In addition to levying income taxes on everyone earning more than $600 a year, the government raised the rest of the money through war bonds and deficit financing. The federal debt ballooned from 52 percent of Gross Domestic Product in 1940 to 120 percent by the end of the war, the highest in history.

In relative terms, the Iraq war has been fairly cheap by historical standards, costing about $120 billion a year or around one per cent of GDP, compared to 45 percent of GDP for World War II. In absolute terms, however, the Iraq war is the "second most expensive war" in American history after World War II. According to Hormats, it has been financed largely through the issuing of treasury bonds, 40 to 45 percent of which have been bought by foreigners.

White House Philosophy Stoked Mortgage Bonfire
We can put light where there’s darkness, and hope where there’s despondency in this country. And part of it is working together as a nation to encourage folks to own their own home.”— President Bush, Oct. 15, 2002
December 20, 2008 / http://tinyurl.com/83qjpf
WASHINGTON — The global financial system was teetering on the edge of collapse when President Bush and his economics team huddled in the Roosevelt Room of the White House for a briefing that, in the words of one participant,“scared the hell out of everybody.”
It was Sept. 18. Lehman Brothers had just gone belly-up, overwhelmed by toxic mortgages. Bank of America had swallowed Merrill Lynch in a hastily arranged sale. Two days earlier, Mr. Bush had agreed to pump $85 billion into the failing insurance giant American International Group.
The president listened as Ben S. Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, laid out the latest terrifying news: The credit markets, gripped by panic, had frozen overnight, and banks were refusing to lend money.

FBI: 80% of Fraud Attributed To Insiders Not Homeowners
The increased reliance by both financial institutions and non-financial institution lenders on third party brokers has created opportunities for organized fraud groups, particularly where mortgage industry professionals are involved. Combating significant fraud in this area is a priority, because mortgage lending and the housing market have a significant overall effect on the nation's economy. All mortgage fraud programs were recently consolidated within the Financial Institution Fraud Unit, even where the targeted
lender is not a financial institution. This consolidation provides a more effective and efficient management over mortgage fraud investigations, the ability to identify and respond more rapidly to emerging mortgage fraud problems, and a better picture of the overall mortgage fraud problem./ http://www.lvamerica.com/USApdfs/FBI.pdf

The Bush administration warned as early as April 2001 that Fannie and Freddie were too large and overleveraged and that their failure “could cause strong repercussions in financial markets, affecting federally insured entities and economic activity” well beyond housing. Bush’s plan would have subjected Fannie and Freddie to the kinds of federal regulation that banks, credit unions, and savings and loans have to comply with. In addition, Republican Richard Shelby, then chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, pushed for comprehensive GSE (government-sponsored enterprises) reform in 2005. And who blocked these efforts at reforming Fannie and Freddie? Democrats such as Christopher Dodd and Representative Barney Frank, along with the then-junior senator from Illinois, Barack Obama, who backed Dodd’s threat of a filibuster (Obama was the third-largest recipient of campaign gifts from Fannie and Freddie employees in 2004).

I certainly have not seen many liberals on this thread who are "open to new ideas, open to new opinions, or tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others".

Conservatives tend to believe in a higher level of independence and self-reliance, and believe that the government should not get involved in private economic matters. Conservatives generally believe that having more economic freedom and a less social government will lead to a more responsible and efficient society.
