Fox News Calls Early End to Interview That Turned Critical

Pulitzer Prize-winning defense reporter Thomas E. Ricks made an an appearance on Fox News this morning to talk about the Obama administration's response to the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi. As you'll see in the clip below, the segment didn't go exactly how Fox News anchor Jon Scott was likely expecting.

Why has the unemployment rate remained high even with 37 months of straight private sector job growth? Because you Repubs got EXACTLY what you have been asking for. Nearly 500,000 Public jobs (Government) have been lost. Smaller government is what you Repubs wanted and now you turn around and use the numbers of those job loses to bitch about. Hey libs, hows that hope and change working out for you?

Obamacare tax increases could lead to massive layoffs

The reelection of Pres. Barack Obama has basically killed the momentum to overturn Obamacare. Now businesses are scrambling to deal with the 20 or more higher taxes as a result of the legislation, ranging from a $123 billion surtax on investment income to the $20 billion medical device tax.

A number of companies have announced layoffs as a result of the new taxes associated with the health care law.

Welch Allyn, a company that manufactures medical diagnostic equipment in New York, announced a layoff of 275 employees, about 10 percent of their workforce, over the next three years.

Dana Holding Corp., a global auto parts manufacturing company in Ohio, warned of $24 million in cuts over the next six years due to additional U.S. health care expenses.

Stryker, one of the biggest medical device manufacturers in the world, is eliminating 96 jobs in December and more worldwide.

Boston Scientific announced it is cutting anywhere from 1,200 to 1,400 jobs and shifting investments and workers overseas.

Medtronic, a medical device maker, cut 500 jobs over the summer and plan another 500 for the end of 2013.

Other companies that have announced layoffs due to Obamacare include:
•Smith & Nephew - 770 layoffs
•Abbott Labs - 700 layoffs
•Covidien - 595 layoffs
•Kinetic Concepts - 427 layoffs
•St. June Medical - 300 layoffs
•Hill Rom - 200 layoffs

In addition to the elimination of a number of America jobs is a shift from full-time to part-time workers.

A Florida restaurateur who operates roughly 40 Denny’s locations and five Hurricane Grill & Wings franchises intends to add a 5 percent surcharge to customers’ bills and slash most of the staff's time to fewer than 30 hours per week to offset costs beginning in January 2014 when the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented.

Likewise, Applebee's and Papa John's have both announced the implementation of Obamacare could lead to damaging cuts in their worksforces. According to the new law, employers with 50 or more employees must provide government-mandated healthcare or risk a $2,000 fine.

Other companies looking to limit the hours of its workers include Darden Restaurants, owners of Red Lobster, Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse; JANCOA Janitorial Services, and Kroger

These are just a few of the Obamacare taxes set to take effect in 2013:
•Medical device tax - a 2.3 percent excise tax on gross sales
•“Special Needs Kids” tax - puts a $2,500 cap on Flexible Spending Accounts
•Surtax on investment income - a new 3.8% surtax on investment income for individuals making at least $200,000 (households $250,000)
•“Haircut” for medical itemized deductions - raises the threshold to deduct medical expenses from 7.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI) to 10 percent
•Medicare payroll tax hike - raises Medicare payroll tax from 2.9% to 3.8%

Add these to the job layoffs::::

NEW HAVEN — Propark America, which operates 31 parking garages and lots in New Haven, has notified the Connecticut Labor Department that it is laying off 186 workers at its facilities in the city, but a company spokesman says it has no plans to eliminate any jobs.

The Hartford-based company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice Nov. 20 with the Connecticut Department of Labor. The notice says the layoffs are scheduled to begin on Jan. 20.

********
QUEENSBURY -- The C.R. Bard plant in Queensbury is laying off 54 full-time employees to bring its staffing level in line with demand for its products.

Employees were notified of the layoffs Monday, and the actual reductions will take place over the next few weeks.

The layoffs announced Monday are on top of 55 layoffs at the medical device manufacturing plant in July, said Scott Lowry, C.R. Bard vice president and treasurer.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)-- A coal company headed by a prominent Mitt Romney donor has laid off more than 160 workers in response to President Obama's election victory.

Murray Energy said Friday that it had been "forced" to make the layoffs in response to the bleak prospects for the coal industry during Obama's second term. In a prayer circulated by the company, CEO Robert Murray said Americans had voted "in favor of redistribution, national weakness and reduced standard of living and lower and lower levels of personal freedom.

General Failure
By THOMAS E. RICKS
Looking back on the troubled wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, many observers are content to lay blame on the Bush administration. But inept leadership by American generals was also responsible for the failure of those wars. A culture of mediocrity has taken hold within the Army’s leadership rank—if it is not uprooted, the country’s next war is unlikely to unfold any better than the last two.

Ricks is pro-military and an insightful reporter. But because of his tendency to say what he actually thinks, I seldom hear him referred to by senior officers without a wink and a snicker.
Mainz05 • a month ago −
Where this article loses me is when it describes the succession from Casey to Petraeus and the attendant change in course from "conventional" to "counterinsurgency" warfare. I should probably put "warfare" in quote marks, too. I think the author correctly identifies a lack of situational awareness among each of the commanders he profiles, and perhaps a bit of entitlement, too. But what is more important is encapsulated in a couple of words in the decription of Sanchez's arrival: they were in an impossible situation. This is also - correctly - the crux of the criticism of Franks: his failure to appreciate the difficulty of the situation, and where it was bound to head. And when Petraeus comes in, where does his brilliant mind lead him to direct his strategy? At sticking around long term and turning into the friendly neighborhood police force of the middle east. To understate the obvious, it bears mentioning that that strategy can only "succeed" in a world in which we are prepared to become the next in a long line of great powers to bleed its national treasure indefinitely in the unwinable game of occupying someone else's country (the list is long enough for Afghanistan alone). So where, again, was Petraeus's long-term situational awareness? On the criteria the author(rightly) used to judge the others, he could (and should) just as easily have skewered Petraeus for presuming it was fine to adopt a strategy that could have no other end than bankrupt his country (or more likely, for having the lack of historical acumen to appreciate that this was the case).
You cannot just breeze along from identifying that fundamental problem - the lack of any clear strategy - to a solution that is based on personalities or career achievement. Yes, our generals need to be held accountable. But the single best thing we could have done from a purely selfish, U.S.-centric standpoint (which is where you need to come from when deploying our military) with respect to both Iraq and Afghanistan was not to go to war in those places (and if you did have limited strategic reasons to invade Afghanistan post 9/11, then to get out very quickly). To the extent that this article is trying to say we need to be MORE worried about our generals than we need to be worried about our executive branch committing our military to impossible missions, I am afraid I have to disagree.
Ricks is the Real Deal, I trust the man at his word...he isn'tnot like C. Powell-The political soldier.

Fox News: Tom Ricks Apologized For Benghazi Criticism; Ricks: No, I Didn’t

A Fox News Channel (FNC) vice president has told the Hollywood Reporter that author Tom Ricks apologized privately for his comments on Monday that the network has been “operating as wing of the Republican Party.” But Ricks denied ever making any such apology.

On Monday, Ricks alleged that Fox and the Republican Party’s obsession with the raid on the American consulate in Benghazi was an election gambit by the right that has somehow survived the election.

When Fox anchor Jon Scott asked,“When you have four people dead, including the first U.N. ambassador in more than 30 years, how do you call that ‘hype’?”, Ricks responded by asking Scott if he knew how many security contractors died in Iraq.

Scott was forced to admit,“I don’t.”

FNC’s Michael Clemente, executive vive president of news and editorial accused Ricks of trying to gin up controversy in order to sell more books.

“When Mr. Ricks ignored the anchor’s question, it became clear that his goal was to bring attention to himself — and his book,” Clemente said to the Reporter via email.“He apologized in our offices afterward but doesn’t have the strength of character to do that publicly.”

The Reporter asked Ricks if such an apology had taken place, to which he responded,“Please ask Mr. Clemente what the words of my supposed apology were. I’d be interested to know. Frankly, I don’t remember any such apology.”

Yes, as a matter of FACT, you were inaccurate.

You do know what a fact is, don't you?
Let me clarify.
It is a matter of OPINION that you think I am homosexual.
It is a matter of FACT, that I am heterosexual.

Please understand that no matter how many times you repeatedly post this OPINION, it will not make it any more FACTUAL.-It will be a figment of your imagination.
