I had a toothache for about two days so i called my Dentist office, and was informed my regular doc was on medical leave but i could see his partner. i went in there *yesterday* with my face swollen up thinking he would give me antibotics and tell me to come back and have it pulled. Instead he took xray said it was absess and pulled it. Today my face is twice as swollen, i still hurt and i am losing more time at work since i work at CSC and cannot talk. What should i do, go to the ER or back to the dentist????

funny, i work at csc and have an absess too lol i went to my dentist yesterday with my face swollen and she gave me antibiotics and pain medicine. she said she wont even touch it till the infection is gone. she said when there is infection, the medicine that they use to numb you wont take. if your face was swollen, the dentist shouldnt have touched that tooth till the infection was gone.

Go to the ER asap. i know how csc is and get and excuse, my daughter is off w/ p-monia )that is why they take and xray- then if abscest, give you antibotics forat leat 7- 10 days or my dentist does, it could go to your heart and kill you, especially if you have other problems. i'd be looking for a lawyer---good luck, hope you get well, nothing like a toothache

Yes, infection can go to your heart and kill you. That is why the best treatment is to get it out!! Some times (depending on where the abscess is in relation to the tooth), you can pull a tooth that is abscessed. Sounds like the dentist did you a favor and followed dental association recommendations. As far as looking for a lawyer, the next time you have a toothache "kybutterfly", see if the lawyer can help you...since you know there is nothing like a toothache!! He went with a toothache and got treatment..the proper treatment.

I appreciate the info. I was scared a bit tho, because my brother in law's uncle pulled an abcess tooth in his home with plyers and died. it was in the newspapers a couple years ago, but i would NEVER attempt to sue this dentist, he does great work for community and i didn't indicate he did something wrong, i just wondered if that was procedure and i was looking for an answer similar to this one, so thanks!

No dentist is supposed to touch an absessed tooth the infection can get in to ur blood and can kill u. ur supposed to take antibiotics till the absess goes away and then get the tooth pulled.

I had a tooth extracted yesterday which had an absess, dentist said I could try antibiotics first but said they don't normally work, he assured me it was safe to take it out. I now feel much better than I did yesterday with the tooth gone. Im now on antibiotics as a precautaion but really glad I had it done. He was a reputable dentist so im sure I did the right thing by having it removed, the pain would just have gotten worse.
I have read some of the other comments on here and checked internet and I cant find any actual facts that it was the wrong thing to do, im sure its just an old myth that a tooth with an absess should not be taken out.

sounds like he didnt educate her as to the possible repercussions of having one pulled while she had infection in her body.

what dentist do you work for---so we will all know to NOT come to that office and risk our lives due to the lack of information given!!!!

and to the OP, go to the ER and get first an antibiotic shot and also the pills, and maybe some pain meds, you're going to need them all! Good luck honey!

I went to the dentist three week ago with my face
Swollen he gave me antobotic for three weeks. Still the infection was not gone he told the best think is to do is to pull it out. I made my decision to
Pull out my tooth he put me on antobotic and to put a ice bag on my face. I hope tomorrow I feel better. The best thing is to pull the tooth out and get the infection out .
But I have have bad teeth since I was a little girl
But my dentist is ver good. I trust him

My little brother had a broken tooth and a abcess in the gum on the root of the tooth he had it for about a week and had it pulled as of 5/31/2013 and was In bad pain when it was pulled now a few hours later he is now better you cannot die unless it was a fully developed and was pulled incorrectly and it got into a crack or opening in your mouth to lead to a flow in ur blood stream and poison it at first I was worried too also I had an abcess when I was 9 and it bursted under my tooth Nd it wasn't.dangerouse at all
