What are you ideas on a roadside attraction that would attract tourists to Knox County? For example: Largest ball of twine, etc.

Nothing would possibly work. Location is too bad.

Possibly build an Arena like Corbin's. Bring in some big name artists.

But, it would most likely be too costly.

There really is nothing to draw in tourists, main entry into town is a pawn shop then a tattoo parlor then another pawn shop. There is nothing in town to hold any attention unless you need an attorney or a prom dress. Not even a decent restaurant.Xmas lights just dont do much especially the random way the brickyard is decorated.Walmart killed the small town atmosphere of mom an pop stores and there isnt any way to bring it back. The few peeps who own property on the square want more rent than a small bussiness can earn. There are a few points of interest throughout the county but should the tax payer fund advertising for a private enterprise? We have mountains and a river some counties have managed to capitalize on them,it may be something our tourism board could look into

We already knew this. The Question is, what could we do to change it?

I like your idea of an arena 12 miles from another arena that cant even get a decent truck pull or wrestling match.Im sure big names will line up for an audience of 250 .. but you already knew that ,right?

We have ancestors. Knox county has the forefathers of a lot of people in US. I think lots of people who are interested in their family History. They would come to see where their family passed through and probably lived for a generation before they moved on.

Of course we threw away a lot of those resources when we built the new courthouse.
But some are probably available here and there, like Union College, the Advocate office, etc.

But if they wanted to drink a beer, stay in a hotel, etc., they would be off to Corbin.

Guess we better go back to that ball of string. Or do something astounding with our jail or drug users. We have lots of them.

Or, how about hiking Daniel Boone's route?

There are no easy gimmics that would work but Tourism is the only thing that would revive this area and keep our best and brightest while drawing qualified people to run and govern the county and city..

And there is a way to do just that.. Barbourville actually has a long and noted history in the state.. Barbourville was around long before Corbin was even thought of, At the turn of the century it was a town with five star restaurants and hotels, Trolly system and had visitors coming by train to visit from many surrounding states.....

That is how you bring tourism here... the Three First Steps would be...

1. Designate downtown, Knox Street, and several surrounding blocks as a Historical District with Zoning regulations that require any new building or Old Building being refurbished to guide lines for Historic Accuracy for a 1860 to 1900 look and design. This would allow the city and county to apply for Historical Restoration Grants through the state and federal government... Then allow Tax Credits for any company or individual within the Historic District that restores a structure to a historic look to off set construction costs, and then a set period of time of tax abatement for such biz to become established...

2. Pass a Alcohol allowed law for restaurants and entertainment venues within the Historic District ... This would allow restaurants and entertainment venues to have reason to build or relocate into the Historic District. This would also give professional people night life and entertainment venues to attract the people needed to run the hospital and assorted required offices within the city and county... It would also give reason for local graduates of Union to stay use their qualification to better the local region...

3. Tear Down the Monstrosity of a Court House... And replace it with a Small 1880's style attraction of a court house... There is a designation that the Court House Square must house the Knox County Court or the land reverts to private ownership.. But a Small very scenic court house with most of the area for parking and some common park like grounds around it would allow for a Small Court Room to be used as a Justice of the Peace type facility for weddings and events and a tourist office with a small museum would maintain county control... Then the actual daily function of the courthouse moved to the Old Knox High School Grounds... This would move traffic and parking for government out of the square and allow for parking and foot traffic to the new Old historic store fronts...

Now I'm not saying that is all that needs to happen, things like a county wide clean up, enforcement of litter laws, purchasing a couple Motor Trolly Cars to make rounds and other little things like picking one of the local surrounding mountains and building a park at the very top with over looking view of the town by night with picnic areas and hiking trails through some of the more wooded surrounding areas... But those 3 would move the area in the right direction....

Barbourville should open a water bottling factory, put a fancy label on it and distribute it all over the region. Nobody cares what the water is like, just that it has a cool label.
