he is right im a manager at a dollar general and i WILL be fired if i attempt to stop a thief. i have never heard anything about being sued for calling the police though. on that note i had a new employee call the police on a shoplifter a while back and the cops pretty much acted as if it was a joke. there is not much theyer going to do about a stolen drink or candy bar they are shure as shit not knocking on doors over it

Yes the store manager is allowed to stop a thief but only at the door and they have to be 100% sure that they have merchandise on them. Otherwise the customer can file a lawsuit and it can cost the manager in question their job.

Do all your stealing at dollar generals they are not allowed to stop you. It is against company policy for there employees to stop a shoplifter. This is true. I was talking to a manager while in dollar general today at Corbin. They are nit allowed to stop you. They will fire the employee if they try to stop you. Shoplift at dollar generals only and you want go to jail. Be sure to tell your buddies
Actually we do it all the time. We stop thieves before they exit and ask them if they want to pay for what they have and we tell them we can't make them put it back but once they step outside we will call the police and they always seem to put it back. They only reason a thief gets away is if they were sneaky about it.

Also I would like to note the more you steal the less money goes to the store and the less hours employees get and the more prices go up in the store, so you SOB are taking away people's hours and making things more expensive for everyone you inconsiderate jerk! By doing that you make it harder on everyone you should be proud of yourself

No they want call the police because they can be sued for it. They done fired some people for stopping a shoplifter. They want risk it.
Not only can an employee legally ask the person to stop but they also can detain for up to exactly 60 minutes and not a second longer. This pertains to security personnel too. The video feeds can be used not only by store workers and managers, but the police can actually use then for prosecution. It is possible you live in an area where the laws of detainment are different than other areas, as they tend to do from state to state. It may be that the store you are going to could be simply be employing individuals that have experienced bad issues and are afraid to speak out. I promise you this shoplift, you step on my turf in a DG and I will hand cuff you and see to it in the courtroom on your judgement day that I bring forth all avenues of evidence including feeds and witness against you. The tax payers have to take up the slack for what ignorant people do, and that places the thief in the position of ignorance. You will have your day. You never know I may be knocking on your door with a warrant very soon.

Just to let all you shoplifters know, yes we do stop you all and call the police. Not to mention we can also detain you in any means as possible. So just a FYI, my store has caught so many shoplifters and are at the top of our district for catching them. We make it into a game and you will be prosecuted for it.

I know this is a old post but its not true. Dollar general managers can stop shoplifters ban you from the store and prosecute you for it as well and keep in mind most employees at dollar general are managers.my store has one store manager , one assistant manager and two lsa (all managers) and only two people that are not managers and we do our part catching thief's in our store. And while I can't speak for other stores our driveline associate who comes in to do our resets once a month is also a LP associate for Kmart as her main job and she actively catches shoplifters in our store as well.
