Why would you want to try to harm someone who is simply making a valid point? The facts prove, most of their statement holds merit. A reasonable person who has spent any time at all there and dealt with the people, will come to the same conclusion as Barbourville Native.

I do not hate Barbourville or any person in knox county but I would not want to expose my wife and children to that atmosphere on a daily basis. You guys have serious problems and probably one of the roots is you think you are bad azzes and can get your way thru intimidating others.

The intimidation factor works on women and kids, as you probably know, but if I were you I would be careful offering my foot to someone. You might very well end up with your own foot stuck up your own azz.

listen, I have lived here all my life. I graduated from barbourville independent in 98-99, and I went on to college. That was MY choice. You Cannot lay blame on the whole county because you don't have a good life. life is what you make it. if you want nothing, then that is exactly what your likely to get. I grew up with very little (and still have most of it left.) but I work hard for everything I get. I don't live off the government. I make my own way. and I love my life, if you dont, then suck it up and do something about it.

I live in Knox Co. and I use to like it here, my child got in to some trouble and ever since he has had a target on his back. I know every one is going to spout out there crap about getting in trouble and taking responsibility for it, but it dose not matter. This is not the place it use to be. You have to look at the people who are running the town and ask your self what the hell happened. Every office in this town is being run by people who barely have a high school education. Every one of the city police were wimps in high school and they get off by bulling kids. I agree it is a joke but I can say if I was ever lucky enough to get out of here and had no intentions of coming back I would post exactly how I feel and I probably would name names. The one thing I would not do is post something like you did without signing my name and owning it. Man up if you hate it so much. By not signing your name to your post leads me to believe your not to sure you wont be back some day. I live here and I hate it but if I ever lefe you better believe I would be more than glad to tell a bunch where to go and sign my name in bold capital letters.

Barbourville is not a happening place to live because there is just isn't a demand or incentive to stay here. It's not a shit hole. It's just a dysfunctional small town. There are some great small towns in the US that are functional. I think Barbourville is beautiful and has a lot to offer. Unfortunately, I don't think things are being done to benefit the greater good of the community. A start could be to give small business owners greater incentives so they can stay in business and we can optimize the downtown area. Many businesses have left the court square. Maybe we should find away to get good businesses in there. Any ideas? I have pride for Bville.

The Court square is too small and restricted to actually do a lot with, the square should be a compliment to a larger area where activities could be scheduled and executed.

I think a good start would be to set up a panel of volunteers to study ways to create activities centered around Union college campus, the pond area and eventually pointing all participants toward the square area, on foot, bicycle and trolly. Gifts food, shoping and history should be the primary concern for the square area....foot traffic. All activites other than that should be consideres for the college campus and the pond area.

Things like concerts, car cruzes, bike and car shows and meets, whatever ideas that come up and are approved.

The key would to be ...come up with a group of volunteers that have no motive other than to help the city and county, not long time power brokers that already run most things and have made the mess we are in.

Non resident students and professors from union college, neighboring county residents and officials and ordinary working people from Knox county and barbourville would be where I would seek volunteers to comprise the panel.

Set up a few vollunteer meetings , organize the panel and meet a few times and see where it leads. If it seems worth while seek some funds thru grants to hire a couple of professionals to study it farther. The local politicians, schoolboard and the churches and local power brokers must be kept out of the process until it is absolutely necessary to involve them.

A good place to start is to contact Hal Rogers for his advice

Then contact people for their support and sanctioning such as
A....The American Legion Post in London
B.... The Lexington Herald.
C....The Kentucky State Police Post in London
D....The Mountain Advocate
E....Wymt t.v. Hazard.
F.... St Joseph Hospital London.

or whoever Just involve reputable organizations to volunteer to help as they may have time and inclinations.

There are good people in Barbourville. I grew up here too. My parents spanked me when I needed it and took me to church. I had a great childhood. It wasn't easy. If we didnt grow a garden we starved in winter, but it was good. I have a son that is now 23 he went to school and now has a great job that he loves. So what it comes down too is if you are strong enough to not let the bad influences define you. We all make mistakes but God forgives us when we ask him.
