Pests, Be Gone! 10 Natural Ways to Make Your Home Critter-Free

No need to use chemicals—instead, use these herbal, fruity, or soap-laden solutions to problems with pests like ants, mice and mosquitoes.

Flies hate the smell of basil. To discourage them, place pots of basil at doorways and windowsills and on the kitchen counter. Don't have enough sun for potted basil? Put dried basil in a small muslin pouch, rubbing it occasionally to keep the scent strong.

Cats love catnip. Mosquitoes? Not so much. According to Science Daily, catnip repels mosquitoes more effectively than DEET. Grow it in your garden or apply undiluted catnip oil to the skin for up to two hours of protection.

Spiders are not fond of citrus. In a spray bottle, mix water and unsweetened lemon or lime juice. Wipe your countertops with the mixture or spray down doorways and windowsills. You can deter spiders in your garden by spreading around lemon, orange, or lime peels.

Use a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water to wipe down countertops and other surfaces—anywhere you've spotted ants. For best results, repeat this several times a day. Doing so destroys the scent trails that ants use to navigate.

A pair of barn owls and their brood can eat over 3,000 mice in a nesting season. Attract them to your property with an owl box, if a quiet rafter or tree crook is not available. Should the food supply be dependable, the same owls may return season after season.

Wasps are incredibly territorial and will not build a nest within 200 yards of another one. So build or buy your own fake nest! It’s like a scarecrow for wasps. Hang one in the front yard and one in back, and you’re done.

Alternately salting and vacuuming your floors will kill flea eggs. But since fleas have a three-day reproduction cycle, you have to be diligent: Salt every day for nine days and vacuum every third day. Don’t forget to empty the vacuum every time, or the live ones will crawl right back out again!

Cinnamon bark oil has been shown to control dust mites. Mix several drops into a 50/50 solution of water and denatured alcohol. Spray bedding, carpets, and any other places dust collects. Added benefit? Your house will smell like cookies!

Trap fruit flies with this simple approach: Fill a glass three-quarters full with vinegar or cider vinegar, then add six to eight drops of dishwashing liquid, and fill to the top with warm water. Gruesomely effective.

Who could call Bambi a pest? A gardener. Many have had luck deterring deer with Irish Spring soap. Hang it or spike it to a stake near things that deer like to eat. Alternatively, sprinkle shavings or small chunks on the ground.

Hey birdthreaders, how are you? Welcome to SUMMER! I started off early, working the flowers, weeds, bird feeders and rabbit food. I thought early would be good, but by 8:30 it was hot. haha That's where the pool came in handy, although I bout burned my butt (and the rest of me, lol) floating on the water with occasional dunks and swimming until my legs hurt. Loved the exercise, cold water, and beautiful chemspray-free skies. Last night was gorgeous. Shower, lots of lotion, dinner finished, might go back out later and enjoy the sky as the temps go down. Life is good. I hope you all had a great day.
Going back to read up and then post some interesting things. I will post so you can read it and if you want to see the pictures you can click on the site. Or scroll and roll....lol
here's an effective, inexpensive way to keep your pool clean and clear...use bleach, baking soda, epsom salt, borax, magnesium chloride, and peroxide...this will give you a good pH balance and stable chlorine levels, and it will feel good on your skin also.

I remember, or at least I think I do, you talking about wanting to move to Denver. It is funny that even though we currently do not live close that I still feel sad that you would be moving so far away. I hope it is far off still. One day soon we will all meet up.
I just made the switch to Fire Fox in order to use my research program. I still find myself using IE as I hate change of any kind. LOL It should have been easy for me since IE is really about useless.
How are all of your furry babies doing? Are you still enjoying working at the clinic? Is the neighbor doing better now and is he still making the trips to see his sister?
(((Big hugs)))
all my four legged children are doing fine. Joe poodle had corrective surgery for his luxiating patella last summer on his left hind leg and has not had any further problems but we are supposed to put him under again this summer to correct the other side.... have not decided yet if he is getting it done right now. it does not give out like the other side was but he has the same defect in his right knee socket and tendon attachment that caused him to have problems on the left side so i know more than likely its unavoidable but probably delay-able. he just got over a bad bout with giardia (cause he eats poop)so im just thinking i want to wait maybe till next year and let his system fully bounce back before i put him at risk for an infection. the cats are crazy as ever and still destroy everything in sight and my used to be outside am staff is getting good at just walking away from confrontation.

the neighbor- sister passed away in April. sad but she is no longer struggling and he seems to be at peace with it. turns out he has a brother that lives in Utah that he just had not mentioned before so he is not completely with out family. its obvious that he and his sister were the closest but some times these kind of things will bring family together (unless your my family then there's just a lot of bickering) he is still driving up and down.... not as much now that she is gone but he has to handle the house and her things. hubby and him both will have time off from school the first couple weeks of august before fall term starts and i have heard a couple mentions here and there about them maybe going up there and staying a couple days to get her house ready to sale.(im supposed to i guess be dumb to that plan still because they trail off and walk off...yeh right lmao! fools....i know everything always....every time! and after being home with him more the next month or so im sure i will be the first to start him packing but whatever.... if they want to sit around imagining flames shooting out of my ears at the notion of a road trip... who am i to deny them their plight. <rolls eyes> i get a good laugh..... guess that's all that counts.

love working at the clinic .....wish i could be there more. since i am still just an extra employee i was the first to have my hours cut so now im down to two days a week there and still getting the munchkins of the bus.

Denver is very long term.... two years at a minimum. hubby can do his AS at the community college and then do the rest at morehead online but if we did find our selves in Denver by 2016 he would have more options there... and i have been searching for a full time position at a vet anywhere within a forty mile radius of here for more than a year and have yet to find one. i could find a job out there in a months time and start out anywhere from fifty to eighty thousand a year, more if i go back and finish my radiology labs. a lot to think about and its far off in the future still but, the dispensary with a drive thru window/ pit bull rescue dream is still alive..lol

@Betty.. I find it interesting that barbeque was an invention of the slaves. When "Massa" got the choice cuts and left the slaves with the less desirable cuts, they found that slow cooking those created a quite tasty meal that could be "spiced". For a change of pace, I sometimes switch off from KC (Kansas City) Masterpiece to a Memphis Rub.

Many folks mistakenly call "grilling" out as having a barbeque. Over the years, barbeque has been expanded to include all sorts of outdoor grilling.

I am waiting on daylight so as to go chop the weeds in my corn in the cool of the day.

"Massa's" choice cuts is where the term "eating high on the hog" originated.

A duck walks into a bar and asks, "Got any grapes?"

The bartender, confused, tells the duck no. The duck thanks him and leaves.

The next day, the duck returns and asks, "Got any grapes?"

Again, the bartender tells him, "No -- the bar does not serve grapes, has never served grapes and, furthermore, will never serve grapes." The duck thanks him and leaves.

The next day, the duck returns, but before he can say anything, the bartender yells, "Listen, duck! This is a bar! We do not serve grapes! If you ask for grapes again, I will nail your stupid duck beak to the bar!"

The duck is silent for a moment, and then asks, "Got any nails?"

Confused, the bartender says, "No!"

"Good!" says the duck. "Got any grapes?"

Have a good childhood friend in Denver, always wanting me to come out. I would love to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Our winter's are cold enough for me. Besides, my roots are deep in Kentucky.
