Thanks...what is his background? Is he an engineer? Don't want to waste my kids time if its not a good class. I've heard most of the stuff up there is subpar.

If you're so worried about things being subpar, take your child somewhere else. We don't need people like you trying to talk our school system or our advanced classes down.

From the research I've been doing there is no need to talk this school system down. The rankings are horrible. I was hoping there was a glimmer of hope for some of the advanced classes at KC.

What a sad comment! A new parent who is concerned about their sons/daughters education and someone is worried about looking bad. The school systems around here are "subpar" and that is from years of abuse and poor hiring choices. I would guess that the person that was hired to teach the engineering class is not an engineer but a family member of the boards or relative of a certain person in the county.

This county has a chance to step up and change the system with a new super and new board members. Lets see what happens! I'm betting same ole same ole.

I for one was not aware of the engineering thing you are talking about but am glad to hear we have one.

Kids will learn if they want to and have support at home. If not, then it don't matter what kind of teachers we have.

So who is this teacher? Don't think I saw an answer here.

The Engineering Program is an up and coming program that is superb and giving kids an opportunity to expand their learning. The program is only in it's first year, so obviously it's still being worked on, but its a great experience.

The program sounds like fun and a learning experience. I just hope they hired someone who can do it justice.

Just a thought..... maybe since you're a concerned parent you should go meet this teacher and the rest of your child's teachers as well. I'm certain that the teacher would appreciate a parent taking an interest in their child's education.

Parents and teachers should be working together for the good of the kids.

Well said. I'm sure that a parent who is this interested will take the time to meet with the teachers and principals before enrolling their child in a school. I'm glad to see parents trying to get an informed choice for their child. We don't have a lot of choices but I'd make sure I checked out KC, Barbourville and Corbin before I made a decision. Its worth driving for the benefit of your child.

Thanks everyone for the information. After much research I have decided to forgo Knox County and Barbourville Schools and drive my child to Corbin. It came down to test scores and some things I found out about the Knox system.

That is bad to have to take them to Corbin but I do understand. You have to do what is best for your child.

As for the engineering teacher, I think he is a nice guy but not sure if he can handle the program. I heard they had two engineers that were willing to come in and teach the class but decided on him.

I sat in on the interviews for the new teacher. Although I didn't recommend the teacher that was eventually hired I think he has done an average job this past year. As for the other ones who interviewed, there was two engineers but neither one of them had a teaching degree. They both would have been exceptional at the job since they were certainly qualified but for some reason we were not allowed to offer it to either one.
