Someone forgot to grease the wheels of cooperation, wouldn't have taken much .. a "broken" pop machine .. a mowing service .. paint the parking lot lines a few times a year .. leaf removal for non excisting trees .. you know ... unbutton a pocket so the usual suspects can get a hand in to pick it a little.
This still doesn't fix the issue; there is not enough revenue to operate it . The recent headlines will have current members not renew with the fear that it will close and their money will not be refunded. It was apparently built with no research done or was built with disregard for what the data suggested; that a facility with this much space , this much water to heat and treat, will go out of business . Many will be leery as the media stated the center is in trouble.

The problems I am sure were very apparent from the start . Some are mad that the media reported on this situation ; others appear to try to argue that when the above-referenced facts are stated that the people who are commenting are "mean" to the kids and we need to be "positive" and save the pool for the kids, ect.- the point is that throwing more money in this project will not correct the problem- which arose either out of greed, complete ignorance, or self serving folks.

The pool is too expensive to maintain - not enough people - hsrd to get to - off the beaten path, not enough people paying fees , too many other exercise options , option is to close or ask barbourville utilities to heat free , give free water, electricity, find a volunteer director , volunteer employees , get insurance company to insure free ... Ask every agency to cut their budget and use their funds to subsidize - get fiscal court to contribute ...

Other option is to close it - people don't understand not about being mean - it's about the fact that it can't sustain financially - they must have known this !!

they said in the beginning, the gas was free .. the gas is now not free .. that is the whole problem, everything else can be fixed, 6800$ gas bill per month.. who said and why was it free in the beginning?. The director has been working without salary for a year (??), according to advocate

Stivers really needs to promote and advertise their Silver Sneakers program. This is for people age 65 or older.

I just found out that my Medicare Advantage Plan supports the program and I can go to Stivers anytime, and use anything at the facility at no charge to me. My insurance pays for it. Many Medicare Supplimental Insurances pay for it.

I had to call Stivers myself and ask if they had the program. They need to advertise it, as we Baby Boomers are retiring now, big numbers of us every year. This is one way that seniors can support Stivers Center.

BabyBoomer: you are correct that Medicare will pay for silver sneakers. Like I said in the beginning I think the space for strength and fitness for all program needs to be expanded to include better equipment that all could use.

So if I could ask again what would people like to see in stivers if they got more money or a private individual took over. I think more space, larger fitness area (baptist), racquetball, walking track etc..

There are lot of things in life we can look back on and say shouldn't have done that. But we're here now and I don't want them to close it down and have it gone.

I can't see how anybody would benefit if it closed. I think Union might have first option to buy it but I can't see them being able to afford the cost. Union would also have to pay a large sum of money to fix their pool. The piranhas would loose their home and would have to go back to Union if they fixed their pool.

Who do you see as benefiting from the closer? because I can't see anybody gaining anything.

Again..It will take a private investor to buy it and keep it operational for the future..As the city try's to to keep it going they will slowly drown in debt..It should have never been built..And to keep it operational sooner or later we will hear the words RAISE TAXES to keep it going..If it comes to that I say bulldoze it..

I also agree the center should have never been built. It took almost 10 years to raise the funds for it.(why complain now?)
We have it now, deal with it. Medicare does pay. We need all kinds of groups here. MS patients could use the pool. Any one with an injury.Have privacy for overweight people tying to lose weight. There are so many ways to raise money for the center. Knox county health could do there rehab.(How many Dr's say move in water)

There are plenty of options to bring in more people. One problem I see is the therapy pool needs to be used for that and not swimming lessons. I think the local physical therapist's were using it for that when it first opened but when Dee took over said that it was conflicting with swimming lessons so they turned away paying rehab patients.

Also I agree that with the need for a certain amount of privacy when individuals are trying to loose weight. What I don't want to see though is the "planet fitness" attitude come into play. What I mean is just because a person is strong or healthy they should not be turned away just because it makes overweight people self conscious to be around. If you don't know what I am talking about google "planet fitness" and you will find a lot. I think this is just shaming the healthy and strong. What we need is a place where all can work together to fulfill their full potential.

Too many kids allowed in the cardio room under aged. Not paying just hanging out. Parents are dropping their kids off there as a daycare and NOT PAYING ANYTHING. Even adults are going there without paying their membership for months. the help at the desk doesn't even ID anyone when they come in= their there just earning a payday. and lets talk about the workers there who have friends who they allow to sneak in without paying. START CHARGING A MEMBERSHIP FEE TO EVERBODY WHO COMES THRU THE DOORS. They even allow some to use the party room without paying. NOW THEY CANT EVEN AFFORD TO RUN THE AIR CONDITION. Barbourville cant have anything bc a bunch of hillbillies don't know how to run it = to the workers there who have friends who are not paying - I plan on reporting you . YOU THIEVES
