Anybody have any ideas on how to fix the Wellness Center lets here them.

Obviously Babourville didn't need a 50 meter pool, but guess what we have one so lets not talk about the pool.

1. The size of the cardio and fitness (weights) area is very inadequate and the equipment is close to terrible. For the center to recruit new members this would need to be addressed. I feel if the center were to expand the fitness areas and purchased new or at least remanufactured equipment, put in an indoor walking track, and made the fitness side 24hr access they could see close to an increase of 200-300 memberships. Remanufacture equipment would cost about 250-300000 for all cardio and weights and machines (similar set up to baptist). I feel is something like this would be added a lot of people who travel to pineville, middlesboro, corbin to workout would stay here.

2. In addition to the fitness area maybe a basketball court could be put in where kids can play ball while supervised and not have to play in an area (public court) where drugs might be. It would also gives kids a place to play in the winter who were not on a team who may just want to play or possibly with the number of local churches a mens league could be formed.

I feel this problem is one because they spent money in an area (pool) that might have been better used in other areas. I also feel that the center is already marketed well and right now the only way to increase membership numbers to where they need to be is going to be spending money in an area that will bring in members and this is not the pool.

I thought about something else last night that might be useful in this area. I was thinking in addition to new weight lifting equipment and space would be a community kitchen (similar to high school home economics) where classes could be conducted to teach people how to cook health food that they could incorporate into their daily lives.

As long as Darren west is mayor and kceoc runs it I doubt they have any chance of doing any better than they are doing now he has no clue about anything and the public other than the swim teams dislikes dole who runs it .

The pool can not be operated feasibly in any capacity . Maybe it can be removed , taken down , filled in . The remaining space could possibly be utilized for fitness , zoomba , as a community room or something that could be afforded from an operational facility from both a cost and benefit standpoint. Seriously maybe there is a way to open a wind, fill in the pool area and put in basketball and maybe indoor track , ect.

So fill in the pool and you will have no more piranhas or Union swimming team or pool in Barbourville as Unions pools is broken. I really don't think filling the pool in is a constructive idea. We need ideas that can generate about 300 memberships to make it to a break even point.

I've been thinking about this a lot on my way back from making a truck payment. if they charged everyone 5 cents for each obamaphone and put that money toward the center that would generate enough revenue to keep the center going for the next 17 years.

If they would just charge everyone that comes in then that would sure help. Heard they were allowing some in without paying.

Thats what the idiots on the city council said about the waterpark but now the employees say the waterpark has lost 90,000 dollars since the council took it over and look at it now everyone has quit going because of all the drama .

Common don't people have real ideas on how we can make the center better instead of complaining about the city counsel.

perhaps if the Stivers center would send out bills when memberships expire they might get renewals. I tried paying a month before mine expired and they wouldn't take it. Neither time that the membership was expiring have I received a bill.

Obviously a better system to remind people to renew memberships would help current members out and possibly keep membership number up.

What I am talking about is what was mentioned last week in the advocate which is, the center needed about 300 additional memberships to be be at the break even point. Again in my opinion a larger fitness area similar to baptist or other fitness gyms in addition to a basketball court could accomplish these numbers. Additionally membership costs would be comparable to baptist's which many people drive to Corbin to use.

Several years ago when it was built the city did try to get them to do that but I remember where Paul dole would have it no other way but build the pool first because that was the only way to make money but he didn't tell the public that his wife's swim team members would have the first use of it always even if it was to push center members to the side and now look where it is ?????

Did not act constructively - when planned . No entity can sustain the pool - utilities make this an impossibility - gas well produces two days worth of utility - again - was there an engineers consulted geologic studies on gas production ? Either very poor planning or very self- serving use of funds. Now past thinking about revenue sources - must salvage . Not going to get 300 memberships in short period - meters running as I type on utilities - pool either be emptied of water and made to not be a safety hazard or filled in and exercise/type facility . Can't sustain . 200k just for utilities per year - they knew this if feasibility studies were completed

local businesses benefit from the swim meets , anything that helps out the local economy should be "assisted" through a rough period. The city leaders have to come together and keep their fingers out of the pot and stop fighting over how to "get something" out of it for themselves. Someone has made out like there is a competition between the water park and the pool. A few dollars worth of pop money isnt worth anything to anyone except that 1 person.

We have a 50 meter pool now so we have to deal with it. If they fill it in or close it the piranhas (let's not punish kids), unions swim team, every person who takes swim lessons, and seniors who do aerobics will loose the only pool left in Barbourville. Union has a pool but it has been broke for about a year and probably would not be fixed. Does anybody have some constructive besides the OP..

Why do you people even need a place like that..any body with eyes can see nobody in this county looks like they have ever exercised in their life..and I help build the place.with that being said . Why wasn't the money spent on something useful like an off road park . If you want to play in the water go to the river. We made ramps for you to walk down all over the place..and another thing .that center was built for a select few to enjoy. .the general public was to use the river..dont be mad at me my ass is probably bigger than urs..lol. O.O

Not punishing kids.... Can not realistically pay for it ... Can't meet the bills ... Fix the union pool can't pay for an 800 000 gallon pool heat it ect...

So your saying the city would give money to union to fix the pool? Union could just say we don't need a pool or a swim team? If that happens Barbourville looses it only pool.

No saying the pool can not be be maintained due to no income stream - not by any municipality including barbourville - not saying this to hurt anyone - ask any person with any expertise in budgeting, economics , accounting, or fiscal management if a community with an average income level , per capita income, a population size , can possibly sustain an Olympic sized pool , heating, maintaining, insuring, staffing- is not feasible ... This is why it is in jeopardy .
