I heard that BMS has started segregating classes by gender in the 6th grade. Is this going to be a school-wide thing? What is the rationale behind it?

What the need to do is solve their problem of "not seeing" the relational aggression that their popular girls use to rule their school. Separating boys and girls won't solve anything. If they would put out a zero tolerance of the crap with lies, gossip, drama they would ho things. If they weren't in such denial, they would check out these kids FB accounts, twitter accounts, randomly pull some phones and read the texts when there is drama brewing. But then you would have to do something.

What is it supposed to work out? Is there some goal with this separation?

Does Lake know that gender segregation has been found to be unconstitutional. Do a google search for gender segregation in public schools and you'll find all kinds of court cases by the ACLU. If my child was affected, i'd be bringing a lawsuit myself just to get rid of Lake. What's next are we going to separate the students based on their race? BMS is far too sexist, racist, and elitist (and that's just the administration in my opinion)

Yeah thats what makes America great so many lawyers and so many tools willing to be used by them. Personally I am just tickled sh^tless if the kids get an education and I really don't care if separating the girls and boys needs to be done to make learning happen. Not every action is sexist, racist, homophobic, etc. I guess you find what you look for.

Problem is that a lot of students AREN'T getting much of an education because these students are being bullied or harrassed with today's technology 24/7 (at least in our day a kid could go home to escape the harrassment). Mr. Lake turns a blind eye to this and has done so for years. Maybe a lawsuit will force the county into looking seriously at the issues. Letters to Mr. Lake come back with smart@ss remarks because he feels he in untouchable. It is past time BMS doesnt have his little UPS car in the parking lot!

This is where parenting comes in. Why does a 12 yr old have a cell phone or Facebook? Ridiculous! What is even more ridiculous is when parents try to justify why they NEED them or how they monitor them. BS!!

Well as for the cellphone issue - Both my wife and myself HAVE to work in this economy. Back when I was a kid, my mom made sure I had a quarter so that I could call her in case something happened. Now, we give our child a cellphone for the very same reason. As for the comment about Facebook and any other social media site - I completely agree with you; middle school kids really don't need a Facebook account.

That all being said, I know personally of several issues of bullying that didn't involve cellphones or social media sites and in all the cases, if the Mr. Lake didn't take the side of the bully, he minimized the bullies actions so that no real & meaningful response was ever conducted.

My eldest was tormented daily at that school. I had to take him to get stitched over his eye because someone thought it would be funny to hit him in the head with a book (no witnesses, teachers, no punishment). I had to take him to get his shoulder x-rayed because he was tossed over a fence (again, no witnesses, no punishments). I had to replace his backpack because it was p!ssed on by a few other students; not only was there no punishment, but he also lost points in reading because his journal (which had gotten ruined) wasn't complete (he couldn't remember all he had been assigned to read). When my son did say enough was enough and told the bullies to "Leave me alone, Damnit", he received a 3 day suspension (amazing there were witnesses this time) and was not able to go on the 8th grade trip. It was explained to me by Mr. Lake that he felt that with all the bullying that may have gone on, he can't risk an incident (i.e. he couldn't guarantee my son wouldn't face more bullying).

The point is this has NOTHING to do with parenting (other than the parents of the little shites who are now seniors and almost the age of consent) and has NOTHING to do with technology. Plain and simple, the administration is grasping at straws because they have no clue as to how to handle the issues. I agree with the other poster... Lake should retire or be fired

Nothing is ever going to change at this school because they refuse to see that they have a problem with bullying and aggression. Most of the teachers and administrators I ever had to speak to there had the attitude that children who are picked on somehow are to blame for it, they "bring it on themselves". Relational aggression among girls at this school is particularly awful, and no teacher or administrator ever "sees" it. That is a load of crap, they either approve of this behavior because they feel like certain kids are entitled to this behavior, or they are to weak to do anything about it. My recommendation to anyone who has to suffer through this school is to take the minimum proper steps to address your issue, start at BMS, when you get no relief, go to county school BOE ( which will be a joke), next stop-go to the state BOE Superintendent. You will NEVER get anything accomplished unless you take it to that point. And you will do yourself a favor if you have lots of documentation. Keep track of every phone call, meeting, and write letters expressing your concerns. They will not respond to anything unless they are made to do so. Oh, and if you really call them out like this, expect your to be targeted by administration too.

It may cut down on flirting in the classroom, but it will NOT cut out fighting. Or all flirting, or some kids using aggression to control the other kids. You only stop that if you call kids out on their behavior. No one at that school is going to do it.
