Why not both high speed rail across the state and a link from LAX to Ontario? It makes sense that the California High Speed rail should start in the LA metro area and connect to San Diego first, since usage of Amtrak's Surfliner between the two cities is so high there should be good demand to get true HSR off the ground there, and a connection from LAX to Ontario and to the rest of the HSR system would make sense in that context. The Bay Area residents are wringing their hands over the routing of HSR through their cities - I say leave 'em behind and start this economic workhorse in southern California while they whine their opportunities away.
