Blowing Rock Continues Study for Wine and Culinary Institute
As a steering committee continues work on a plan to establish a wine and culinary institute in Blowing Rock, which was first proposed in 2008, a Florida-based developer has proposed a culinary institute at Banner Elk Elementary School, which Avery County plans to sell after construction of a new Banner Elk Elementary is completed.

What a great idea to bring in dollars and people to the Banner Elk area. Right now there are multiple empty stores as there is not enough traffic to support commerce. The Great Train Robbery sits empty except for a Real Estate office and a Mexican restaurant. Rumor had it that the Banner Elk folks think a community center be put in the old elementary school. This will drain the public coffers and what the community center could offer is already available at Lees-McRae for $100 a year. Why build what is already there. If the wine/culinary institute offered meals to the public, I'm more than positive that the public would support it. What a great idea for all the surrounding areas.
