I was just wondering what is the law in Michigan or city law regarding lunch/food breaks. Are employers suppose to give employees the opportunity to eat while they are working. I am talking about when they work all day. I work all day and cannot afford to lose my job. They give us a lot of hours which I appreciate and need very much. But sometimes we go all day without eating. I need what is that? Are there no laws or something against that?

Labor laws require employers to give their workers periodic breaks, if a shift is a certain length.
So if you're working all day without a break, that's against the law. What you do during the break is up to you. Contact MIOSHA.

I did it says the following: Are employees required by law to have a meal or break period?

Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

Employees under 18 years of age may not work more than 5 continuous hours without a 30 minute uninterrupted rest period. There are no requirements for breaks, meal or rest periods for employees 18 years of age or older.

Wow...you're right! Most states do require breaks but not Michigan! I would bring a power bar in my pocket, and eat a good meal before you go to work! Federal OSHA law does require workers to be able to drink water, however. By the way, MOST michigan employers do provide breaks.
Cisco Tango: Who is the employer? People should know about that. I think it's a shameful practice, even if it is legal.

I was always thought that you should treat others the way you would like to be treated. They you sow what you reap. This is the same place I assume that varies the rate and method of salary and pay dependent upon your legal status. Not paying the minimum wage because of certain circumstances, huh? I have been hearing about this. Sad. Karma.

They also make us pay for the whole entire bill if we forget to get a signed on the receipt. It is against the law to do too. Because it doesn't matter if there is a sign. only if the person said that they were never there so then they get paid twice.

What establishment is this? You do realize that this is almost never the case. I myself own a business in town. Use credit card machine on a daily basis as well as take telephone orders. I have countless girls working for me. We all forget to sign slips, throw them out, give customers the incorrect one. We are all human. In the last ten years I can not remember of an incident where a customer actually said he never bought from us and the receipt was not there. Either way, it is against the law to make them pay for it unless you have indicated it in a signed contract with the employee and the employee would be crazy to sign that. They are getting paid twice and ripping you off, sweetie.

This needs to be changed in Michigan too.

I was in there tonight having drinks with some friends and one of the new servers table forgot to sign the wrong slip, he tried to catch up with them and couldn't find them. As I was finishing my drink I overheard someone tell him he is responsible for paying the bill even though the credit card was already swipped. I am appalled we have this type of illegal activity in South Haven and the servers are tolerating it because they need their jobs. Why isnt there something being done about this?!

This is crazy ! I have a friend that has been looking into the laws on breaks and found that you have more rights federally then state. She then went past the state dept and filed a complaint against the company federally and had more of a case.

Well something definitely needs to be done. I will never eat there again and I will make sure everyone of my friends knows about this happening and I bet they won't eat there either and something is finally done about it!

Yea I am with the employees on the credit card deal. Online purchasing and by phone purchasing are too common place. I will look it up and post the actual law tomorrow.
