Ohio Christian school tells student to skip prom

Full story: news.yahoo.com

Yahoo News has a story about a 17 year old boy who has been threatened by his high school principle with suspension if he takes his girlfriend to her Prom at a public high school. The boy would also be ineligible to participate in his class graduation and would receive his diploma in the mail once he made up his exams after serving his suspension. The school, which forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing, also threatens expulsion if he is involved with drugs or sex at the prom. It is not clear what the school would define as sex, but since hand-holding and kissing are forbidden it can be assumed that these as well as any type of dancing which could be construed as sexual explicit could trigger an expulsion. What is your opinion?

I think first, principal is the correct spelling. Secondly, the problem with adults is they make too many rulz they know kids are going to break. Join the real world, oh holier than thou. Seems to me there are way too many judges and not enough judgees. Judge not lest ye be judged. And don't throw the Bible back as an answer. Since when does hand holding or rock music send a sould to hell? And no, it doesn't always lead to other things. Give this younger generation some credit. Find another battle to fight.

I say the boy and his parents should get a lawyer and sue his school. His school has NO right to tell him what to do outside of school. He deserves to go with his girlfriend.
"since hand-holding and kissing are forbidden it can be assumed that these as well as any type of dancing which could be construed as sexual explicit could trigger an expulsion." GET REAL!!! THIS SCHOOL is a throw back to when those teachers could not get a date and go to any prom. Every student should protest. What is next? Telling the students they can not watch tv or go to the theatre or go out anywhere together???
OHIO WAKE UP AND PROTEST THIS FOR THE YOUNG MAN!!!!!!!!!!

Why all the fuss?

The gospel means OBEY MAN'S RULES and be MORAL!

Sometimes I wonder. It's just simply amazing that there are people that think this way.

When you go to a private school you agree to abide by their rules and regulations. If you don't want to abide by them then you don't have to go to the school. He was told what would happen before he went. It appears to me going to the prom was more important than being a part of his own school. This has nothing to do with the decision the school made, it has everything to do with the decision the student made.

Nobody cares about you. And the "gospel" has no legal authority over someone. Just like the school doesn't on a student OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL FUNCTIONS.

Do you get it yet? Or is your religious thumping making you that much of a moron?

Wrong. Their rules and regulations are only for school activities and functions. Not outside of school. Although the school could have a leg to stand on if a student was busted by the police for something.
If you don't want to abide by them then you don't have to go to the school.
Wrong. Strike 2.
He was told what would happen before he went. It appears to me going to the prom was more important than being a part of his own school. This has nothing to do with the decision the school made, it has everything to do with the decision the student made.
And another religious loser who thinks you're above everything. Oh, BTW -- Strike 3, so sit down and shut up.

Again, the school has no control -- nor the right -- to control what a student does OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL. This was not a school function. It has EVERYTHING TO DO with the decision the school made.

And now they're going to pay. Take a basic law course, why don't ya?

If you -- and other similiar-religious wackjobs care to contest me, then I suggest you start citing Ohio case law to support your BS.

In school and on school grounds.

Outside of school and off property? Never happen.

A lawyer with a JD from a crackerjack box will own this school in court.

BETTER LAWYER UP CHRISTIANS ... GOD DONT PAY FOR YOUR LEGAL FEES.

I went to a private school. Graduated from one. They are not just educational institutions they are character building institutions. There were certain activities we were not allowed to participate in. To do so would defeat the purpose of what was trying to be done and undermine the school.

The school I went to was not a Baptist School and it was not run by a church. Principles were taught, and guidelines were expected to be followed. This was all clearly agreed upon, not only by me, but by my parents. So the rules applied even off campus. Most Christian schools, not all though, are set up the same way. If that is the case here and the agreement is in writing, a lawyer probably wouldn't be able to do a thing.

I will NOT sit down and shut up.

I was right, the family did sign such an agreement.
http://www.heritagefindlay.org/index.cfm...
....at the beginning of the school year, every family must sign a statement of cooperation. Students in 7th through 12th grades must also sign it. It doesn’t say that you have to agree with them, but that we will all abide by them. What kind of a school would we be if we suspended a policy because it was convenient to do so?

Light Sensitive wrote the family in question signed an "agreement". How about, for argument sake, we call it a communist manifesto? And those wretched public schools with their evil doctrines are brain washing today's youth and leading them on the path to Hell just like the Pied Piper. Dearie, your private education was in no way superior to a public school education. Just something else to hang over someone's head. Back to the "rules". It's just another ploy for this group of "think we're better than you"'s to try and prove their point. Sorry, private schoolies, I'm not impressed. There are good, moral young adults everywhere.
