What's going on at the high school. I understand there is a concerned citizen's group that's been formed but they meet evenings when I am at work. I understand it has something to do with the new administration. My one and only encounter with Dr. Furlong was a positive one where she resolved a problem that I could not resolve with Jeffrey Bennett, the former principal. I have heard about the senior lounge being converted to a school board meeting room, which I think is a shame. The seniors at most high schools these days have perks as a reward for their achievments. It would be nice to see the senior lounge reinstated. I have heard that the seniors have had their off-campus lunch travel restricted. I personally support that, feeling that they are safer on campus rather than driving around off campus. I have heard that numerous teacher have quit, retired or are threatening to quit because of the new adminstration. I have seen the word dictatorship used in letters to The Daily Star. I wonder if the staff is just resistive to change because they were comfortable with the status quo. It would be nice to get more information from a variety of sources. It also seems that there has been an attempt on the behalf of some of the teachers to convince the students to agree with their point of view. This is based on things I have heard from my daughter and some of her friends who, thankfully graduated last year.

What's with this 'morale' crap?

Study hard, pass the course, get the grade and get out. Better things lay ahead in college. High school is just a stopover. Morale? We doan' need no steeking morale.

That's a nice sentement, but what about the teachers who are not just "passing through" high school on their way to bigger and better things. Their attitudes affect the manner in which they teach and the effects snowball. The general populace of the school district is still very much in the dark as far as the specific problems go. Can anyone add anything concrete and useful to this discussion? Or is it merely the a newcomer has disrupted the apple cart in the old boy network?

Most teachers just want to put in their 20 years, get summers off, and retire on a million dollar taxpayer funded TIAA-CREF pension.
Fact: 75% of the school budget is teacher's pensions, salaries, and health benefits.
I cannot feel for their 'morale'. If their 'morale' is low, let them go back to class, get that MBA or PHD and go on to higher things.
What about my morale when the school taxes jump 20 percent? I don't see the teacher's picketing when that occurs. But when the whiners don't get a contract, whine , moan and wail.
Y'all know where the 'morale' issue can be stowed!

It's about more than low morale. It's about poor handling of potential crises, non-communication between administration and teachers and staff, non-communication with community and parents, and the list goes on and on.

Thank you. Finally some useful information. I went to that link as well as the School board minutes. I wonder if the concerned citizens group has a similar site?

No, they do not have a website. I do attend their meetings, and they really are worth going to if at all possible.

I have been told that an Advanced Placement teacher recently retired from the high school and that is has caused a problem for the students enrolled in the AP classes. I certailnly hope this retirement was not politically motivated, as I've heard it may be. If that is the case, shame on that teacher.

I've had no problem with mrs. Furlong, however the super intendant is an ass, the buses left kids during a snow storm that produced about 2 feet of snow (which the super knew about but kept us in for half the day until the storm was at it's peak.) We went to the superintendant and he blamed us for not running to our lockers to get our stuff quick enough. We came back from BOCES less than 2 minutes before they left. He is just there for his paycheck. So are many of the staff, sure some are good teachers but many are just shitheads with superiority complexes. And why are these "concerned parents" even talking if they aren't even going to give their first name. I know most people in this area are "good citizens" who think that Unatego is a place where Jesus walked and they only feed the fire for asses like Leheigh to waltz in and do a shit job teaching us students. I know nothing about how to care for a kid because of him, I do know how to stalk children. He was a pro at that, raped one too but dickweeds kept it hush hush because "Unatego staff are too good to do that."

How is a Health teacher supposed to teach you how to raise a kid dummy?

I'm sure the school loved him so much that they covered up a rape.

Judging from your writing there is a good reason you were sent to Boces.

Joshua,

I can assure you that at least some of the "concerned parents" who posted here anonymously have also presented their concerns publically at board meetings and directly to school officials. I know this because I am one of them.

My name here in this forum is not relavant, only the opinions I post are. When it came to our attention that Mr. Leahy was not doing his job we did complain. By that time it was so close to his retirement that it really did not matter.

If you know nothing of parenting then you have your parents to blame for that. It is not the school district's responsibility to teach you how to parent. Also, if you do not know how to parent then I strongly suggest that you do not have kids until you do learn how to parent.

Also, If you know something of a rape involving a teacher and a minor student, I suggest you man up and report it or encouragfe the victim to report it. Otherwise it is just maliscious hearsay which should be disreguarded.

I have a daughter who attend this school and has nothing but problems. Yeah, she is over weight, but these kids can be so cruel. Before anyone makes fun of someone else. These kids should look in the mirror. By making fun of other people and hurting their feelings. They are covering up , their own miserable lives. This should be addressed strongly in this school as well as it has been in other schools. Come on, stop worrying about your budget and lets worry about student lives that attend your school.
